All Things Denver, XXVIII

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Stories like this bring out the best in the college hockey community.

It is not about who wins, who made a bad call, which coach stood on the dasher boards, whose fans are most obnoxious, or whether a reporter should wait for a formal press release.

Poster after poster has reminded us that it`s all about Jesse`s well-being.

When I travel to Denver to attend the hockey games, I`m not there to see the coach or the reporter, as much as I respect them both. I`m there to see the Martins. The Ryders. The Ruegseggers. The Testwuides. Even Mike.

One of our warriors (sorry, NCAA) has fallen. The tribe, and even neighboring nations, have called for support for this brave who brings out the best in his colleagues and adversaries.

Jesse, we know you will be back. It`s sportsmen like you that inspire others with your hard play... and in this case, your difficult recovery. We are with you every step of the way.

Lovely. More tears.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

One of the alums is getting a huge get well card made for Jesse that will be at the game on Friday night. The goal is to get over 2,000 signatures including both the DU and CC teams. The card will be sent to Jesse up in Minneapolis. A table is to be set up near one of the entrances so fans can sign. When the exact location is known, that info will be posted here and at LetsGoDU.

I've heard of another one that was targeting the student section, maybe they'll coordinate. Said alum has been in contact with DU, and hopefully the card(s) can also make it to the pregame d.u.g.s. tailgate on the south end of the Ritchie Center.

I think it's a great gesture, and I also think that Jesse and the team would really appreciate us trying to create an exciting, determined atmosphere for the game on Friday. Of course, easier said than done. It's challenging to move on to the next series, Gold Pan or not, in this situation. This is very rattling for us all, and we're on the outside.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

The story should be about Jesse and his heroic outreach to Malone.

Chambers covered the unfolding story as he should have. DU and Gwoz were not able to control a story this big the way they'd like.

Focus on Jesse.

I guess if I was Chambers (which I am not lol), I would have kept some of the issues DU and Gwoz had with him and his reporting of the story to myself. I definitely wouldn't blog about it. But that's just me. Like it's been said, it's not about them.

Like anyone in professional life, when someone calls you on the carpet for something, you need to step up an defend your actions if you believe you were right. As a journalist especially, when someone questions your story, your timing or your sources, you MUST defend yourself, as you are only as good as your reputation.

Mike is just as concerned about Jesse as as anyone. But Mike needed to do what did - not to grandstand, but to defend his reputation. I would have done the same thing.

Countdown to the Century Club:
Anthony Maiani--5
Kyle Ostrow--16

(How's that for a segue?)

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Banner information for Friday night from MSBDU - I have ordered the banner for fans to sign before and during the game Friday night. Please stop by the table at the North Entrance to Magness and sign it. I will be sending it to Jesse on Saturday morning. The banner is 2'x 8' so there is plenty of room for everyone to send best wishes to #14.

Agree!
A reporter has to defend his credibility.

OK, here we go with the bad memory again, but I remember signing a banner for another DU player in a similar situation. Was is Mike Aikens?

Aikens had his neck broken by Wisconsin's Sean Hill in the Serratorre era early 90s.

Aikens never played again.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Both my mom and I talked with Mike Chambers during my dad's (Jimbo's) illness and after his passing, and Mike handled everything with compassion, courtesy and professionalism. He made sure to ask if it was OK to blog about specifics of his condition and for any blog and/or article comments he made about Jimbo, even after his death. So, in my experience with Mike, I thought he handled everything as he should have, for what it's worth.

I was in town that weekend. On Saturday night in the press box, some snarky kid from Wisconsin asked ME why DU people were so upset (it was an honest mistake--he approached a distinguished, well dressed, handsome guy for the official DU position). Wanting to give our young visitor a good impression, I told him that I wasn't a DU official. And if I were, I'd give him 9 inches of sandpaper d**k to take back to Madison with him. He seemed to understand and moved on to the free hot dogs. :D

You could hear a pin drop in the old barn that night.

Speaking of your dad, I was in the press box on one occasion, when this nice man came over and introduced himself. I had a face he hadn't seen and just wanted to make me feel welcome. A gentle gesture from a gentle man. Later, when I began posting here, I got an e-mail from Jimbo welcoming me. He'd evidently sniffed me out (I'm guessing with a little help from Swami) and, again, just wanted to make me feel welcome. Like all DU posters, I miss Jimbo, especially since we were from the same era and knew some of the same people. I wish we had a thousand more like him.

You know, this weekend will mark two years since his passing and almost every game I meet someone new who tells me a remarkably similar story of how he made them feel welcome and a part of the Pio family. It could be a former player reminiscing about when they first arrived, that they were nervous and timid, and how he helped ease their their transition or from former parents and how he made them feel welcome and a part of things. The impact he made is still quite evident and makes me feel good. Thanks for sharing... :)

Jimbo was welcoming to more than just DU people. Unfortunately, I never had a chance to meet him in person, be we exchanged a few emails here and there, and I have to say that he seemed like an absolute gentleman, and a fantastic guy. Also a great representative not only for DU hockey, but for all of college hockey.

I've been meaning to thank you for standing up for us over the weekend. Like everybody else, I went to bed Saturday, savoring an outstanding win and secure in the "knowledge" that Jesse wasn't seriously hurt. When I got online Sunday I was stunned, dismayed and shocked at the nature of his injury and the potential it might have to seriously impact the rest of his life.

Then I wandered over to the DU/UND thread and was stunned, dismayed and shocked all over again at the general tenor of the Sioux fans' postings (right up front, I understand those folks don't necessarily represent the main body of their fans). There was a lot of blaming the victim: "he should have had his head up" There was a lot discussion about how Malone had been hosed by the call. Some wondering whether, because of the call, he'd be unavailable to them this weekend (I thought that was particularly insensitive). And, of course, the "Does DU even know how to play hockey" comment. Well, I was so angry I probably broke loose about 5 pounds of plaque from my arteries.

And I endeavored to chastise them about their evident lack of empathy and misplaced priorities. I suggested they think back to when Genoway was hurt or even Bina, and they might have some idea of how we were feeling. This was met with suggestions that the incidents were different, the guy went out of his way to hit Genoway, etc. etc. Thus completely missing the point I was trying to make. I think it was SJ Hovey who finally pointed out the "shoe was on the other foot," and maybe they could put down their green pom pons just for a second.

But I'll tell you this, I didn't see a single post from anyone suggesting Malone acted deliberately or that anything should happen to him as a result of this incident. Most DU posters seemed to understand (including me) that there were issues here far more important than what the referees did, or whether the boy will be permitted to play against UMD. By contrast, after the Bina incident, we were subjected to weeks (months?) of "Punkovich" references, assertions that he acted deliberately and suggestions that something bad SHOULD happen to him.

So even though some of my fellow DU posters politely but firmly suggested I shut up, I still think, collectively, we handled this situation pretty well. No raving, no ranting, no threats (although some of my language harkened back to my days in the AF). And when we learned of Jesse's incredibly generous gesture, well, we were amazed. Sometimes adversity DOES bring out the best in people. And I want to emphasize again I'm sure the vast majority of Sioux fans were shocked by what happened and want only the best for Jesse.

The focus here should be on that excellent young man, suffering pain and discomfort, wearing that medievel torture device to stabalize his head and neck, facing possible delicate surgery and wondering and worrying what the future will bring. So thanks for helping out. I was filled with righteous anger but it was misplaced, I see that now.

Hey! ;)

I'd go get my post from that thread, but I deleted the thread after the bickering was continuing. There was no need for that, and since the Jesse Martin thread had started...that was a much better outlet for Jesse updates without having to sift through the "garbage".

Good point. I think we can all agree that we never want to see this happen to a kid playing hockey again, period. The circumstances are interesting, but at the end of the day, irrelevant. So you get full, even extra credit, and can skip the mid term. ;)
