Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Jesse Martin is in stable condition at Hennepin County Medial Center (HCMC) in Minneapolis. He suffered 3 fractures to the 2nd cervical vertebrae.

HCMC is a Level I Trauma Center and has been ranked by US News as a "Best Hospital" every year since 1997. He is in the right place to receive the best care.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

BELIEVE!! That is the Mantra for Eric Legrand, the RU football player paralyzed from the neck down about 3 weeks ago.

It should be DU's Mantra for Jesse also.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

All the best to Jesse. He has certainly had some horrible luck with injuries this season, and this one is hard to even think about. I hope he gets the best of care.

Kudos to the rest of the Pioneers for not turning the rest of the game into a stupid goon fest, too. But I do hope that the WCHA gives Malone his due. This stuff shouldn't happen in college hockey.

Get well, Jesse!

Agreed. HCMC is a fantastic place for dealing with traumatic injuries. Best wishes to Jesse for a complete recovery.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Nice to see so much best wishes coming in from across the Hockey Nation for Jesse, both on this thread and the "Jesse Get Well" thread. Not much more I can add to what I posted on the other thread, except to add my condolences to DMann. Have only "met" him via this site, since I've been away from Denver for 15 years, but I'm only a few years past the same experience and can only say that it gets better and as time progresses, the great positive memories continually will trump the sadness.

Thanks to everyone across the country, especially our "game night rival" fans, who have graciously reinforced here that our commonality as fans of the most special game is first and foremost.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

In other major DU news, it looks pretty solid that the Pioneers' basketball, women's soccer, swimmming, golf, tennis, gymnastics and volleyball teams will be headed to the WAC from the Sun Belt, according to a quote in this Texas newspaper story:

http://www.sanmarcosrecord.com/brea...-Sources-say-Texas-State-is-headed-to-the-WAC

Our new conference mates joining with us (after Boise State, Fresno and Nevada leave the WAC) will be Texas State, Seattle, and UT San Antonio, with existing WAC conference members Idaho, Hawaii, New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech, San Jose State and Utah State.

This is not an ideal conference for DU, but it's offers better regional identification than the Sun Belt.

Martin calling Malone is pure sportsmanship on an epic level. To be thinking about Malone with his own future so incredibly uncertain is a selfless, human and impressive thing to do.

Malone had to be feeling horrible about this, and just reading about Martin's reach-out brings a lump to my throat. I imagine it was hard for Malone to take the call, but I'm sure he felt much better afterwards. After all, Hockey players are part of a brotherhood...

Stuff like this restores your faith in humanity and in sports. It's good to be a Pioneer.

Couldn't have said it better...except for the Pioneer part. ;)

Agreed with that. It's amazing how selfless Jesse Martin really is. He has always been known as a good guy, but this is one of the most impressive things I have ever heard of. The kid has remarkable class and respect.

I have no idea what I would have done if I was Malone, I would expect that he might have shed a few tears during and after the conversation. I do hope that Malone gets through this as well because after seeing the hit a few times, its clear that it wasn't a malicious cheap shot. He caught Jesse simply at the wrong time. It is something that can happen to any player at any time.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I am so proud of that young man. The tears flowed freely when I read about his gesture. Classy, selfless, big hearted and a true sportsman. Regardless of how this turns out, he honors DU with his presence.
