Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Bozak vs Carle on the NHL network prior to the main event, DU vs Wisco.

Carle, Bozak and Butler all are 0-3-3. Stastny leads the pack 2-4-6.
Butler is +4 in 4 games played.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Kyle Ostrow has an upper body injury and is playing at less than 100%. Gwoz mentioned that he did not practice at all last week and they let him put his skates on and a take a twirl only on Thursday.

Power play - DU still making too many passes and not taking shots. A number of times last night they tried the back door pass that got tipped wide by a d-man when the passer had a grade A shot at the goal. Have to put the puck on net more. They are not having a problem possessing the puck on the PP just shooting it. Also when the puck is on the point they are waiting too long to shot. Get the puck and let it go right away instead of dekeing the d-man or checker.

I just wanted to pop in here and say nice win last night over Wisconsin. I didn't catch the first 2 periods, but the third was very impressive.

Now, hopefully you lose tonight to split, but I think you should walk away with 4 points out of this weekend.

Anyway, congrats on the win last night.

Interesting observation. I spent the first period at ice level and the second two periods about 10 rows up from the ice. From where I was, Wisconsin did an excellent job of blocking the shooting lanes on the PP. That's something Mike Eaves' teams always do well. Denver tried getting more traffic in front, but UW cleared them out. DU needs to do a better job down low, cycling and getting opportunities on blown coverages, but they lack the size to play that way. Getting one SOG on the 5 on 3 was flat out embarrassing. DU generated better offensive chances on the PK than the PP.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I was hoping for a 12-part series that would delve into events like "The Smuggled Keg At The Game Incident," "The UMD Coffin Game," and "The five goal comeback against CC." :D

Anyway its nice that people at DU find out about the blog and just a few of the large number of people that make it happen each day.

The "coffin" was inspired. As I've mentioned before, the 7-1 playoff win against them, where Brett "700 SAT" Hull got their only goal was memorable. Then later, in the Writer's Manor bar, torturing a room full of very butch UMD "women" who were drowning their sorrows with white wine spritzers (or was it boilermakers, I forget) Yours truly just hapened to have sheet music for the "D-Rah" handy for the piano player, and we serenaded our guests from the frozen north. Looking back on it we were taking a pretty big chance, some of those "ladies" looked like Harley mechanics.

Add Mermis to the walking wounded. From tonight's game notes.

Sophomore goaltender Adam Murray (1-1-0, 4.50 GAA, .859 Sv%) and forwards Dustin Jackson (mononeucleosis), Nick Shore (wrist) and Jarrod Mermis (groin) are out of the lineup this weekend.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

First WCHA weekend and we get 3 points. Not bad, not bad at all.
Next weekend we go to the Ralph and since the Bears got them, no doubt they will be on the warpath.

Halloween in Grand Forks :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

There's never a good time to play in that gold plated spittoon, but this weekend shapes up as especially tough. If we can get out of there with a couple of points I'll be hugely satisfied. I understand they're planning to give us a Haloween scare by dressing up as normal people. Oooeeeooo.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Thanks for posting KO's comments 78. Hell of a weekend--feel great to come away with 3 points. Great to see the Sr's step up in the third. DU played well all weekend. Two ugly mistakes by Lee and Phillips led to easy goals by UW's first line. If you cough the puck up like that to that line they'll make you pay every time.

I like PS have seen every game so far (wish I was going to the Ralph to keep it going) the PP looked the best it has tonight. We shot the puck! UW does a heck of a job closing the shooting lanes. I agree that it won't be long till Sam gets the full-time nod. I also agree that we miss Dusty doing the power forward work.

I sit right next to the center ice visitor's shoot and I always have fun razing the visitors and the refs. The highlights tonight were at the end of the second right after Little should of smoked Ryder on the break away I told him he should change his name to "Slow" this got one of his teammates and he pretty frazzled. :D At the end of the game, I said to Kelty "rough night on the lines" and he looked up and said without missing a beat "some nights are like that". My respect for the guy shot way up. He had a rough night and he wasn't afraid to admit it to a fan. Todd Anderson could use some schooling from his colleague.

Great effort this weekend! It's awesome to see this team dig out of a hole. I think it's just what they needed. Can't believe that BC got knocked off by the Irish. Classic let down game I suspect.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

All in all, I really liked DU's work ethic this weekend. They skated hard, created chances and put their best effort on the ice. DU had plenty of chances to win the game, but credit UW for a smart, opportunistic road effort.

Kyle Ostrow put the team on his back tonight, and played the best hockey I've ever seen him play, and he is the reason DU was able to bag the tie. Brittain was impressive, and even though they didn't score, Zucker and Shore had a nice game, too. Bennett is also starting to play two-way hockey, so at least if he can't score, he looks like he belongs out there.

Off to Grand Forks, where the Pios would do well to get any points out of there...

Normal people at the Ralph:confused::eek::confused::eek::confused::eek:

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I watch a bit of Friday's game and DU looked pretty good. If you have a weakness on your team it might be age. Zucker looks pretty good. I hope the Wild can sign him soon. :)

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Knowing that slow starts are part of life at UND, perhaps this is the better time for DU to be facing the Sioux vs Late January. UND is loaded, and will certainly get better, but losing two at Maine is not unusual. DU got waxed big time there to start the year in 2005, as Maine was frothing after losing the 2004 NC to DU.

Right now, DU looks very banged up. Jackson and N Shore are likely out for next weekend, and Murray and Mermis have groin pulls. Martin doesn't look right, at least to my eyes. Wrenn only played a few minutes last weekend as he comes back from a torn hammy, and K. Ostrow was also playing hurt. That's 6-7 guys right there.

If Brittain can continue to hold teams to two goals and the seniors lead, DU has a shot to get points in Grand Forks. At this point, DU exceeded expectations in Vermont, performed below expectations vs BC and slightly above expectations vs UW.

.

I would not be surprised with as split, two ties or UND being Swept. After watching this past weekend, I don't have any idea how good UND is, there is a lot of talent and experience on the Fighting Sioux but there were also a lot of passengers and guys not doing the little things it takes to win games. Against BSU they man handled the Beavers at times, this past weekend the Sioux were a turnover factory.

We hoped to be .500 at the end of the first 5 weeks. After 3 weeks that's where we are. UND will be a test especially with the number of walking wounded.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

We're getting an early start on our injury "explanations," and I find that worrisome. We've got a lot of people hurt. And if that thug from Wisconsin had his way, Zucker ("coincidentally" our best player) could have been seriously hurt. Cross checking a guy on his knees in the face, AFTER the whistle had blown is one of the cheaper shots I've ever seen. I found myself wishing that Maggie's ghost would rip that guy's head off and crap down his neck. We can't afford much more of this. And, wouldn't you know it, we're heading up to play UND in that plush dumpster of theirs. Getting out of there with points may be out of the question. Getting out of there with no more serious injuries may be the goal.

In other news, DU men's lax will play National Champion Duke at Bethpage, Long Island in April. Looks like Coach T wants to further his program's exposure on LI.

I hear UND has crowbars for hockey sticks and machete's for skates........
