Rookie of the Week--Sam Brittain

Drew Shore nominated for Offensive Player of the Week

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Florida Panthers have goalie depth in the wings behind NHLers Tomas Vokoun and Scott Clemmensen. The Panthers have 6 goalie prospects in their system with four playing at the pro level including Marc Cheverie. Chevy is currently playing for the Cinncinati Cyclones in the ECHL and is rated the #3 goalie in the system and 16th player overall. He is behind their #1 overall prospect, Jakob Marksrom, and Alexander Selak, their #7 overall prospect. Markstrom is playing in Rochester and Florida sent Selak back to Europe to play because of the logjam at goalie. Markstrom is the top goalie prospect in hockey. DU's current goalie, Sam Brittain, is rated the #4 goalie prospect and 22nd player overall. DU's Drew Shore is rated their #14 prospect and John Lee is their #36 prospect. If Chevy grows into the pro game as well as he did in the college ranks They may have to rerate their prospects. Drew Shore's slow start last year may give him another year at DU. No question he is on a different track this year.

Markstrom is the real deal and this is his first year in North America. He is a first round pick, World Junior star and Florida has him pegged as their future #1 goalie. With so many good goalies in their system, they have the strength to make some trades in the future for non-goalie players. Selak was one of the best goalies in the AHL last season and they didn't want him in a back-up role in the AHL this season so they sent him to Europe to be a starter. Big competition for the eventual successor to Tomas Vokoun.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Where's Dmann?????? Bump

Peter Mannino did not play in the Tharshers win over the Rangers last night.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Tom Zajac played at DU. Sons Travis and Darcy played at UND(the shame of it all)
Son Kelly is playing for Union. Youngest son Nolan, a dman, is in the USHL.

Question: Have we discussed, in the past, why the boys didn't go to DU? Was there a recruiting war for Travis? Or Darcy? Don't remember any conversation about Kelly or Nolan.

Don't know if DU had them on their radar. I knew Tom very well at school and have no reason to think that he wouldn't want his kids to go to DU. Tom lives in Winnipeg and UND is the closest NCAA school to it. Don't know if that played into Travis and Darcy going there. It is interesting that Nolan is in the USHL after the older 3 boys all played for Salmon Arm in the BCHL.

Well, when Gwoz first arrived he rubbed some of the alums the wrong way and a lot of them were quite unhappy with him. They felt as though George didn't necessarily respect DU's history (he always seemed to respect it to me, fwiw), though I think they just didn't like him -- or that he was hired over Rich Preston, the alum favorite for the position. Also, I think George sort of "left them out of the loop" and they were used to being a part of things -- basically he came in doing stuff "his way". In protest, some of the more wealthy alums started holding out on their yearly donations to the program.

We lost out on some quality players who were sons of alums because of this: Travis Zajac was a 1st rounder who obviously went to UND, Mitch Carefoot was drafted and went to Cornell, Jeff Genovy was a 2nd or 3rd round pick and went to Clarkson. Those are three right off the top of my head and it seems like there some others as well.

Let me add my .02 on that one. I have no idea how the idea could take hold that Gwoz was not/is not mindful of our traditions. Even if you factor in Rich Preston and "doing things his own way." My introduction to the new coach came when he reached out to me, wondering if I had a recording of the "D-Rah." Curiously I did, and had it processed as much as possible and sent it off. He responded with a nice note of thanks. My understanding is the tape was played in the Arena and in the lockerroom after road sweeps, where the players were expected to sing along. Doesn't actually sound like ignoring traditions, does it?

One thing that I know he did was step in and dismantle the Pioneer Club (DU's old booster club, for those who don't know). I think that was Gwoz's misstep that really didn't do him any favors right off the bat. All the guys who were part of that were people who had been around for a long time and had long-standing, solid relations with the alums. Coupling that with the feeling that Rich Preston didn't get a fair shake when Gwoz was hired just really irked a lot of the alums.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Thanks for the input. I've been playing RPI's click to pick and picked Zajac from Union after I confirmed he was Tom's son. Ralph Baer wondered why none of the boys went to DU and that made me wonder too.

Thanks to all. I guess that Seth Appert is trying to imitate his mentor by not getting Josh Jooris whose father, Mark, was Adam Oates' right wing for most of his career.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

When Gwoz took over "The Program" was in shambles. The DU Arena was a dump, DU has been losing pretty steadily for 25 years and the school was only just starting to turn around under Ritchie. To make matters worse, Colorado College was a national power under Lucia.

Gwoz also kept the Orange/Lemon tradition as well.

He took Seratore's recruits and made it to the NCAA's and stunned New Hampshire 9-2 in the 1st round.

I agree, there was just a lot of turmoil around the program back then. Heck, even one of the alums who made some of the bigger donations annually for the hockey program actually redirected his donations around this time to the basketball program.

I've held similar discussions with many different people in the past about this very topic (why alums' kids weren't coming) and there is really no single answer. I'm just sort of putting out a hodgepodge of information I gathered about this topic.

Obviously this is all history, now, but I think it took a softening by Gwoz on some of his stances and a general trend towards people accepting that he was actually the right man for the job. One area where Gwoz made huge strides (from what I know), was that he was thought to be sort of secretive and made trustworthy people feel as though he was untrusting of them; Once he opened up and made them feel trusted, that really helped out a lot with how he was viewed by the people closest to the program.

All in all, we should just feel quite lucky that we have Gwozdecky, have a wonderful program and that Dan Ritchie didn't fire him years ago -- or that he didn't leave.

Certainly they're entitled to their opinions. Turn that coin over. I'm assuming he had some reason(s) for dismantling the club. Maybe he handled it badly.Maybe he figured this was the best way to let them know there was a new sheriff in town. Maybe he didn't communicate well. Maybe the dudes in the Pioneer Club thought THEY were running the program. I mean, it's not like these tensions would be unique to DU. Think about Notre Dame or LSU or Texas. Whooh boy. And while I understand disappointment that "one of us" didn't get the job, that's hardly Gwoz' fault. I assume/hope we've moved past those early problems.
