All Things Denver, XXVIII

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I've talked to some scouts and GMs and what really held Gabe back from being an NHLer was his lack of NHL footspeed. He was a lot like Dallas Gaume - a great producer at the college and minor league levels, but not quite fast enough for the NHL. If you can't be big, you better be fast...

Man, Gabe was a great player for us in 2005. As I recall, he was marking the other teams' top players, while scoring clutch goals all year long. My favorite was his sniper shot at the end of the 2nd period in the Frozen Four vs. CC. Classic Gauthier.

Of course his game winner in the 04 championship game vs. Maine wasn't bad either.

I'm sick as a dog and I'm not going to make the game tonight so those of you who are there need to be extra loud tonight to make up for my absence. :D Hopefully I'll be recovered enough to make the tailgate and the game tomorrow.

There is a story on DG at DU Today, which is the University of Denver's official news publication (not a student publication).

After years of fear and distance from some in the DU administration, it's good to see the University recognizing DG and his team of helpers for the value they create....

What a neat story. The administration may not officially recognize Boone, but there is no doubt they recognize DG and his contributions..

Make and drink quickly a Hot Toddy, heavy on the Toddy. ;)
Wrap up in warm blanket and sleep until almost game time.
Then drink a big container of wor wonton or miso ginger soup.
Go to Game.
Cheer for the Pioneers.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Most of the DU fans got a chance to hear the new larger DU pep band last weekend aganist BC.

Here are the remaining six hockey games where the DU band is expected to appear:

Fall Quarter
October
Friday, October 22nd 7:30pm Hockey vs. Wisconsin
Friday, November 5th 7:30pm Hockey vs. Colorado College
Saturday, November 13th 7pm Hockey vs. Minnesota State
Winter Quarter
Saturday, January 22nd 7pm Hockey vs. Alaska Anchorage
Saturday, February 5th 7pm Hockey vs. Colorado College
Friday, February 18th 7:30pm Hockey vs. Michigan Tech

You can also catch them at DU Men's and Women's Hoops games.

Next year, the hope is to have enough band members so the band can play at all hockey games.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Classic WCHA tilt tonight. Two teams pretty evenly matched. Both goalies played well--the edge to UW goalie. He stopped 3 of 4 breakaways.

DU's PP sucks. How the hell can you not score on 2 minute 5-3? I admit that it looked better than last weekend (but that aint saying much). Put the puck on the net! How many face-offs did Shore get booted from?

D corps played well tonight. Third period we moved the puck out of the D end better.
Both teams made equal amount of mistakes--their about where they should be in the polls. The difference between DU/UW and BC is miles apart.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Magness Man is dead on. DU worked a little harder tonight and got a nice home result. DU and UW are similar in so many ways. DU is a shade faster, but UW is stronger.

Gudmanson played like a senior and kept UW close, while Brittain did his job in the Pioneer net.

Zucker was the best player on the ice - the guy's motor is always running.

The early Bucky goal in the 3rd could have been a killer, but wasn't. Zucker survives one of the cheapest shots I've seen in recent years to score the GWG. Priceless.

Well deserved recognition. Although not ALL of DG's undergraduate stunts were listed, right?:D:cool::rolleyes::p

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

DG;s blog has an interesting exploration of DU's athletic logos and mascots over time:

DU%27s+Mascots+%26+Logos.JPG

You know, I was there in '68 for every home game, and don't remember seeing that guy. I was working, so that may account for it, but he's a mystery to me.

I was hoping for a 12-part series that would delve into events like "The Smuggled Keg At The Game Incident," "The UMD Coffin Game," and "The five goal comeback against CC." :D

Anyway its nice that people at DU find out about the blog and just a few of the large number of people that make it happen each day.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

As I've seen the Pioneers live in all 7 games so far (two exhibitions and 5 regular season games), here is my early read:

1) The team big strengths are quickness, defensive play and PK, all of which are vital for any kind of success.
2) The team's big weaknesses are offensive finishing, puck management and the power play, which all need major improvements.
3) The team's seniors have not produced, and that cannot continue. K. Ostrow and Martin look like they are playing hurt, and Maiani has not produced. 15 man games played by those three (5 GP each), and just one total goal to show for it.
4) Zucker and Brittain have probably been DU's best players so far, along with Sophomore Drew Shore.
5) Beau Bennett is talented, but hasn't produced a point yet. He needs to put a little more fire in his belly.
6) Brittain is the real deal. He is still learning to play with confidence as an 18 year old, but I think he's likely to be the number 1 soon.
7) Donovan is amazingly talented, but he has a tendency to hold on the the puck too long, which leads to turnovers.
8) Salazar is a good little scorer. Keep it up.
9) The team really misses a big body like Dusty Jackson down low, banging and creating space. D. Shore is the only power forward DU has right now.
10) Zucker is the most exciting player DU's recruited in a while. You can't take your eyes off him - energy, speed and skill.

Conclusion: DU looks like the fourth place team I predicted - an NCAA tourney bubble team.
