All Things Denver, XXVIII

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I wanted share a few thoughts on school spirit improvements at DU in the last five years - we've made some real progress and while we still have a long way to go, here is look at what's been accomplished since then:

Five Years Ago......................Today
Ruckus the hated bird............Boone the loved Pioneer
No Pep Band.........................50 Strong Pep Band
Fight Song rare.....................Fight song now well-known on campus, sung at games and taught at orientation
No Cheerleaders....................Cheerleaders at selected games
No on campus pre-game.........DUGS Free Food/Beer Garden
No unnoficial online presence....One of the best blogs in the sport (Let's go DU)
Bad homecoming parade..........Decent homecoming parade
Little student senate support....Way more student senate support
Lack of DU-themed bars..........Two new dedicated DU bars (C&G and the Pioneer)
Lack of DU arena display.........New DU history mural on South Wall
No ticket campout.................Successful ticket campout
Facist ushers........................Much more tolerant ushers
No student rally point.............New Student Courtyard

The point is that a lot of hard work is starting to pay off. DU is listening and implementing many suggestions from passionate students, alumni and fans.

We still have a long way to go, but it's important to realize the changes that have already happened. DU is much more spirited place than it used to be, and it will continue to build as long as we keep developing it.
Has it only been 5 years? It seems like a hundred years ago.

Huge energy on campus this weekend. Crowds everywhere and a great vibe.

Now if we can get the hockey team back on the rails, we'll be in business.

This has everything to do with DG and lots of other posters on this board. Years ago when I was a newbie I asked a philosophical question about what if anything is our role vis a vis the DU hockey program. I think my question has been answered!! Bravo!!! clap clap clap!!!!

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Oh, I almost forgot!! I'm about 95% sure I'm going to the Maine/ ND game this Friday!!! Believe me, this is no easy task!!!

All y'all who've been working to improve DU's athletic culture and the game day experience at Magness deserve thanks from all of us. Incremental improvements in DU's well established "tradition" of avoiding, at all costs, any reference to or suggestion of greatness in our history are making a difference. And resurrecting the "D-Rah" and including it in the expectations of what it means to be a Pioneer is wonderful. The students I see look like they're having a great time and fully engaged. Every time Swami refers to "fans" who want things to be calm and dignified (croquet? polo?) I laugh and cry at the same time. This is college hockey we're talking about here, if you don't want to be exposed to enthusiastic crowds THEN STAY THE ****** HOME! It was great to see Boone featured in the "buy tickets" spot shown several times during the BC series.

Anyway guys, put me down as one old Pio who's most grateful for your efforts and successes. I know you'll continue working it and thank you in advance.

It wasn't easy. The ushers at Denver are supplied by a private security company. But we went to the athletic director with some pretty specific things that we wanted to see changed.

1. Hire people that have customer-centric personalities. They aren't police, after all.

2. Fans are there for a good time and to cheer their team, and ushers need to help enable a good atmosphere, within reasonable boundaries. Ushers should try to bring a fun personality to the arena - they are part of the game night experience, and a smile/humor is way more customer-friendly then hardazz behavior.

3. Pat downs should be only done with appropriate discretion and selectivity. Don't make people feel like they are entering a prison with contraband.

4. Stop selling megaphones in your arena shop if you don't want people to use them at the games.

5. Remind customers that "don't like noise" they are at a hockey game and not a church service, and fan noise is to be expected, not reprimanded unless dangerous or obscene. Don't punish people for cheering their teams.

Another aspect that should be noted is that certain passionate DU fans have developed relationships with said ushers. Especially in "Section 18" where DU "policy" has been violated for the last few seasons without consequence from the ushers. Folks aren't supposed to stand there and certainly aren't (weren't) supposed to be loud and cheer. Over the last few seasons, the fans who stand there have built a rapport with those ushers and their supervisors. It has become kind of a "self policing" area where the ushers know the fan leaders in that section will take care of most of the problems. I must say that area has become a fun, yet small, "adult student section" over the course of time. :)

And if schmoozing ushers doesn't yield the desired results, you can always employe the Lynne Powis method: knock the snot out of one of 'em.

Definitely going to the Maine/ND game Friday!! Wohoo! Go Blue!!!!

It would be in DU's best interest if North Dakota won that game.

EDIT: For DU fans looking to get the scoop on UND, Friday's game will also be broadcast on CBS College Sports.

:eek:I will spare you all a reprise of my windy posts on the '68-'69 team. Let's just say if '60-'61 is the gold standard, these guys were just a small notch away from that level. Big, fast, powerful, they'd check you getting out of the bus. A richly deserved honor. But tell me, who are all those old guys in the team photo?

Wish those "old guys" had their names listed so we could compare to "these" guys from the Penrose Library archives.

Here's that other Championship Team from 1968

Thanks for the way back machine. I would give a slight edge to the '68 NC over '69. Seeing my friend Frank Daly brought tears to my eyes.

Maine is a really tough place to play. The students in the balcony are literally within spitting distance of the goaltender. A very neat old school barn.

DU got waxed up there twice in 2005.

I remember it well DG!! You brought with you Boone placards. We sat with Andrew Thomas' parents among others. That weekend was a disaster!! They were still ****ed off about 2004! So why is it in our best interest for ND to beat Maine?, Pairwise? I was planning on routing for Maine considering the folks taking me will be dressed in blue!!, plus I live here!! If you guys see this game on TV, look for me, I will be wearing a Crimson DU sweatshirt and hat. I will be across and down from the freaks in the balcony yelling at the goaltender!

Yeah, we've done okay up in Maine, sweeping them in the '04-'05 season. We also took 3 points when we went up there in '00-'01, so we have a pretty good history. Obviously those games have really no impact on this weekend's games. I'm fully expecting a very difficult series, but I think the Sioux should at least split. I also think we have a very good chance at sweeping the series if our blue line plays up to its ability.

I completely understand why you would cheer for Maine in your situation, but North Dakota winning/sweeping the series will help DU's RPI. Also, come PWR time, common opponents will be huge. If both Maine and DU are teams under consideration, North Dakota will be considered a common opponent. If UND goes 2-0-0 against Maine and say DU takes a point or splits with North Dakota, that will help them win the common opponent metric of the Pairwise. Given that both DU and Maine are thought to be potential NCAA Tournament teams this year, it could, at least theoretically, send DU to the NCAAs if North Dakota sweeps Maine.

So, cheer for Maine at your own risk :p:D:D
