Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Did we get Justin Jones in the hopes of getting Seth? And the same kind of thing with the the Mermis brothers?

As a guy with considerable experience with "package deals," I'm flashing on the scene from "Animal House" where Mandy Pepperidge, or another of the mindless bimbos, refers to "Flounder" and "Pony" as "the wimp and the blimp."

Rakhshani with a couple of "twitvids" at the Isles rookie camp. They play the Bruins rookies tonight in Boston.

Tonight's game will be a live stream.

Wiercioch on the roster for Ottawa's Training Camp. If Cowen, age 19, doesn't make it, he goes back to the WHL. Patrick and BU's Gryba would go to Binghamton.
If you haven't checked out Patrick's rookie camp blog, you should.

The reason why these "package deals" seem to be happening all of a sudden is that around four years ago or so the NCAA changed some rules that allowed players that were exceptional students to receive academic scholarships. Couple that with financial aid and its possible to bring in less talented siblings.

The NCAA also allows players who graduate in three years to attend grad school at another institution without sitting out a year. The DU Ski Team has utilized this rule with positive results.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Rakhshani #48 for Isles.

Lot of pushing/shoving, a couple of fights
Colborne bleeding, (ugly gash) and woozy. Taken to the locker room. Hit from Romano--5 min major; game misconduct. Boston announcers say it was a dirty elbowing.

Colborne has a cut lip, broken nose and chipped tooth.

You go into the NHL looking like a movie star and you retire looking like Jim Wiste. :D

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Oh my God I was just going to say this!! This scenario totally makes sense for him, ah geeeezz!!!
Penn State isn't a good fit for him. Its too much work to start a program and build the recruiting base.

What is a worry is that in a weakened WCHA, DU can't really afford to have the highest paid coach in college hockey.

So yes there is a very real chance that he will leave, but I don't see Penn State as the exit strategy.

By the time the sky falls on the WCHA, a retired Gwoz will be dancing on thatched roof bar on the beach in the bahamas, wearing the most god awful looking pair of striped bermuda shorts anyone has ever seen. :p

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Everyone fears or at least worries about the unknown. I'll admit it, I'm worried. But I'm not afraid, yet. One thing that could make me very, very fearful is to lose Gwoz. If that were to happen, there's no way to put a pretty face on it. Sort of like keeping hockey at DI while dropping everything else to DII. Stalingrad. Whatever it takes, robbing banks, bake sales, whatever.

I didn't want g.d. Penn State in the Big 10 in the first place! Now look at the heartburn they're gonna cause in hockey.
