All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Ryan Caldwell and Aaron MacKenzie both would belong on any list waaaaaaaay before John Ryder. MacKenzie's senior season was 10 years ago (so he played in your timeframe) and he was WCHA Defensive Player of the Year as a senior...We've had like, what, 3 or 4 players get that honor ever.

2 more names...Bryan Vines and Erik Adams. I remember watching those 2 play, great players.

Gwoz on USCHO Live tonight.

Question:
Is 13 too young for Baker Shore to commit to DU?:)

Actually, these are two pretty unsung defensemen.

Vines was a pretty big body who could skate well and captained a great team in '02 whose season-ending loss at Yost still causes heartache.

Adams, to me, was an interesting player. He came in as a smallish, free-wheeling freshman who played a similar game to LaLeggia yet finished as a 6 foot, nearly 200 lb stay-at-home defenseman.

Nice call, though, dubbie...these are two guys that, while not necessarily "top 10" material, were definitely quality Pios.

Drew Shore sent back to San Antonio by Florida.

Coach Dineen mentioned Drew in his post-game comments indicating he thought Drew had a very solid game.

Beau Bennett sent back to SWB by Pens.

Looks like Patrick Wiercioch is one of the 23 players to make the Ottawa roster

Former DU All American goalie, Ron Grahame, to receive DU's Distinguished Service Award at the 2013 Founder's Day Dinner. Ron played professional hockey and won the AVCO Cup in the WHA with the Houston Aeros and played with the Bruins, Kings and Nordiques in the NHL. He also played 1 season in the minors for the Macon Whoopees after graduating from DU. Since retiring from hockey, he has had a number of roles at DU.

Richly deserved. Ronnie's a class act in every sense of the word. Congratulations.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

We've had some great D- men in the last 10 years. Let's play "rank these defensemen, top ten"

All Time (not just the last ten years)

Matt Carle
Keith Magnuson
Craig Redmond
Mike Christie
Bruce Affleck
Greg Woods
Lindsay Thomson
George Konik
Jack Wilson
Ryan Caldwell

Hard to argue with that list.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

According to the Ottawa Citizen
Patrick Wiercioch and Andre Benoit, who have played together all season as the top pair in AHL Binghamton, will make up the third pairing.

Congrats to Patrick!

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Here's my take on this DU Pioneer hockey team after this loss to SCSU.

The good news is that DU has found their #1 goaltender. Juho has proven that he's a reliable backstop who can keep the team in a game even when the team is not playing well.

The bad news is the dramatically inconsistent play of the offense and defense and the fact that we don't have any go to players. I really thought that DU's defensive corps would be better right now than we are. The lack of a couple pure scorers is hurting our team. Uneven levels of effort also hurts. It's got to come together soon, or disappointing results are in store.

PREDICTION (at this point in the season): 6th place in the WCHA and no opportunity for April joy.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

This team relies on DU's D for a big chunk of scoring. When the D doesn't score, the lack of offense from the forwards is more evident. When the forwards aren't scoring the D is taking more offensive zone chances. That results in the odd-man rushes and breakaways that have plagued the team recently. The other thing is DU's breakout has been struggling. This results in players being on the ice too long and getting too tired. They don't recover as fast on the bench after those long shifts. With the short roster, DU has no players that can come in and give someone a break for a night who may be dinged up. Gotta give credit for these guys going out there dinged up but it is hard to be at your best when you are less than 100%.

Badgers beat Miami 1-0

So far DU down to #11 in PWR. Still waiting on some late games

Yep and I agree. You didn't mention penalties directly, but they also will inevitably result from what you have stated. Bottom line is that unless there are dramatic improvements, of which I don't see happening, I'll stand by my #6 in the WCHA prediction. That actually might not be a bad place to be if DU can get it together at the right time. Goaltending can take any team very far. And we do have that.

Yep the penalties are typically the ones you take when you are tired: hooking, tripping, holding. The opposite of the aggressive penalties like X-checking, interference, roughing.
