All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

That was an ugly win last night. Hopefully, the boys play better tonight with the same result.

Hard to believe that Joey Legg's stats his Freshman year were better than Carle's freshman season.

To be fair, Carle missed about a third of his freshman season due to the WJC and an injury. Carle would have had equal stats if he didn't miss about 12-14 games. Joey's overall game still pales to what Carle brought in both the neutral and defensive zones.

Highlights are up on PioneerVision.

That's a great highlight package. As these things tend to do, it made it look easy. It wasn't easy. And a little disappointing that even with the students back there were only 4900 at the game. Those who didn't go missed a terrific, if inartful, contest.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Patrick Wiercioch called up to Ottawa for NHL training camp.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Drew Shore invited to Florida Panthers camp. He will be wearing #50

bump!!! This a nice little run we're on!! No losses in the last 5 games!!!

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

To me Wiercoich was the best looking Freshman I saw from the get go.

We've had some great D- men in the last 10 years. Let's play "rank these defensemen, top ten"

Skinner, Carle, Butler, Donovan, LaLeggia, Ryder, Makowski (not counting this past weekend), Weircioch, Thomas, Mayfield.

Most interesting battle in PIT camp is who gets to play wing with Malkin and Neal. Eric Tangradi, Dustin Jeffrey and Beau Bennett in hunt.

First add Ryan Caldwell to the list. After all he was an All American.

The 5 All Americans should probably get the top 5 spots. Make that 6 since LaLeggia got so much national recognition
1. Matt Carle 2 time Ncaa Champion, Hobey Baker winner
2. Brett Skinner 2 time NCAA Champion
3. Ryan Caldwell Ncaa Champion
4. Patrick Wiercioch
5. Chris Butler
6. Joey LaLeggia All Everything Rookie
7. Matt Donovan
8. David Makowski
9. tie Scott Mayfield and Andy Thomas (What about Adrian Veideman?) Offensive contribution gets more press than shut down defense. And to be honest neither Wiercioch or LaLeggia were/are known for their defensive abilities

Fan Favorite: John Ryder

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Patrick Wiercioch called up to Ottawa for NHL training camp.
Jared Cowen who was a#1 pick was injured (out 6-8 months) while playing for Binghamton, which should give Patrick a better chance to stay up with Ottawa.
For the time being, Marc Cheverie is one of 2 goalies oin the B-Sens roster. UAA's Lawson is the other.

Ryan Caldwell and Aaron MacKenzie both would belong on any list waaaaaaaay before John Ryder. MacKenzie's senior season was 10 years ago (so he played in your timeframe) and he was WCHA Defensive Player of the Year as a senior...We've had like, what, 3 or 4 players get that honor ever.

You're right, thanks to you and Viz for remembering Caldwell. And I spaced on MacKenzie!! I just loved the way Ryder hit so I added him! Anyone else care to play???

WCHA Yearbook is a great history of the league. The awards have changed over time with Defensive Player of the Year added on mid to late "90s.
AAron MacKenzie won it in 2002, 2004 was Ryan Caldwell, and Matt Carle getting the double--POY and Defensive POY--in 2006. Marc Cheverie won POY in 2010, but not the defensive award.

Back in the day, Keith Magnuson was Sophomore if the Year in 1967 and MVP in 1968.
And there is a picture of Coach Gwoz when he played for Wisconsin.

Lot of DU history to be found in the WCHA Yearbook.
(even includes mention off cc winning the NCAA championship)

Don't think that I am dismissing what Ryder brought. He had that certain aspect to his game which was respectable. My personal preference is for the Mayfield-types....big and mean with nice skills...Though, not necessarily over a Carle who would add the LaLeggia stats without any defensive degradation. A Carle-Mayfield pairing would be insane.

Anyhow, LaLeggia had a rough game last night. If chasing down a guy on a breakaway and you are taking a penalty in the process, DO NOT let the guy bury it past your goalie. This is the third season in which a PP still stands even if a goal is scored while the PP is delayed...make sure you take the fercker out without a goal scored -- you are going to the box regardless. Then he followed it up with a CFB and was done...

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

1. Carle
2. Caldwell
3. Skinner
4. MacKenzie
5. Donovan
6. Weircioch
7. Butler
8. Mayfield
9. LaLeggia
10. Makowski
11. Ryder
12.Thomas

Hands down Carle was the best

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

I had to think for a moment, as to whether I'd put Caldwell and Carle in a tie for 1st, but I just can't do it. My initial thought was that without Caldwell's heroics in 04, we don't win in either 04 or 05. But Carle was just as instrumental in the 6-on-3 in 04, he won the Hobey, 2 national titles, and was just such a great all-around player. Plus, Carle was able to contribute mightily as a freshman and sophomore, while it took Ryan a couple of more years to hit his groove as a player and leader. I have to think that Carle and Magnuson are DU's top 2 defensemen ever.

I think DU78's list is good, except I would put MacKenzie over Skinner. I'd also put Ryder a spot or two higher.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Everyone remembers Glenn Anderson and Ken Berry but who was the third member of the line that came down from British Columbia for the 1978-79 season. He was mentioned in Glenn Anderson's Hall of Fame speech and he did not make hockey his career after playing at DU. Here is the answer. He was a **** good player who chose another path.

DU up to #7 in USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Polls
