du78 hasn't started a scoring thread. Wonder if he has power?

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Just started the thread, busy today digging out. Got 12 inches with some 2 foot drifts. Never lost power. Being on the south shore of LI, the snow totals were lower than out east and on the north shore. My sister got 30 inches out east in Suffolk County. Plow finally cleared the street late this afternoon. The big winner was Shelton, CT with 40 inches. First time I had to use the snow blower in 2 years. Luckily it performed like a champ. Eastern Long Island got it the worst. People were stranded in their cars overnight on the major highways as the snow came down so fast, at a rate of 3 inches per hour. Train service is suspended out east and the highways are still closed.

Wow. Glad everything's okay for you.

Glad you didn't lose power. Seems like you've had your crappy weather quota for a while.

Yeah there are still people along the shore who still are living without power and heat from Hurricane Sandy. They can't afford to stay in hotels so they have basically been camping out in what is left of their homes. They have been using generators for electric and if they have fireplaces that is their heat source. As usual the gov't has been very slow to help these people.

Wow. I did not know how slow it had been.

On a totally unrelated note, the DU Lacrosse team opened the season this morning. They enter the season ranked 8/9 nationally, went to Durham and beat 4/5 Duke 12-10. Evidently, it was their first win in a season opener under Bill Tierney, and they snapped the longest active home winning streak in the country. Not a bad start at all.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Last night's game was like a scizophrenic, Jekyll and Hyde with Bi-Polar disorder:
1st period manic
2nd period depressed
3rd period still depressed then really manic
OT "feelin" pretty good then really, really depressed

Are there any meds available that can cure this syndrome?

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

So glad I wasn't in attendance for that game in the Springs. That must have been a heartbreaker! The blizzard was something to see!! I have never seen it snow sideways as hard as it did yesterday. Very cool!

Great atmosphere in World Arena last night. $20 for a ticket was a steal.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

DU in 2011/12 - WCHA 16-8-4 for 36 Points, overall 25-10-6

DU in 2012/13 - WCHA 10-7-5 for 25 points, overall 15-9-5

With 6 games left, DU need to go 5-0-1 to match last season's WCHA point total and 6-0-0 to surpass it by 1. DU ended up in 3rd last year, 4 points behind Minny and 1 point behind UMD.

DU currently sits tied for 5th with MSU and WI, 1 point behind UNO and MN, 3 points behind UND and 6 points behind SCSU. CC sits 5 points behind DU, MSU and WI. The only team not to have played 22 games is MN who has played 20 and has 8 games left. Under the assumption that they would win those 2 games in hand they would be all alone in 2nd place, 1 point behind SCSU. Winning the WCHA is probably not in the cards for DU but securing home ice for the WCHA playoffs and improving their current #12 PWR is a prime concern. This team needs to get on a run going into the playoffs. With the bye coming up this weekend, they should be well rested and prepared for UND coming into Magness for a crucial 2-game series. The following weekend they head to Minneapolis for the last road series of the season, another crucial series. Finally they finish at home against UAA. On paper it looks like an easy series but it never is for DU. If DU wants to make some noise in the post-season, they need to win most of the next 6 games and go into the playoffs on a high note. It will not be an easy task but if you want the big prize you have to beat the best teams at home and on the road.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

So what's this garbage about replacing Boone?
A mascot task force was formed by the students and held their first meeting last Tuesday on campus. First thing mentioned was that "Boone would not be one of their choices." I really don't have any more information than that.

I do know that Boone is still wildly popular with the students & that having a student committee come up with a decent Pioneer logo or mascot would be a huge longshot. Its easy to say you don't like something, its sexy to imagine that you could design a school logo that would last forever & who knows what back channel deals are driving this committee.

That being said, I'd put the odds of them reaching a consensus at around 100-1.

Interesting. And utterly predictable. At Illinois, thousands of students have signed petitions to vote "no" on any options offered by a commission to come up with a replacement for the un-PC Chief Illiniwek. Students still revere the Chief and resent the way he was removed. And they think any new mascot/symbol would make it easier to shove the Chief down a memory hole. In other words, they want to keep their "unofficial" mascot.

Thanks for the analysis. Winning any of those six games will be tough, UAA included. Gwoz has got to light a fire under those guys. We need to play well against all of them. We have to play up to UND and UM, and deny UAA from playing up to our level. Maybe I am being negative, but I am unsure if we get six points these last six games.

I am looking forward to a Sunday midday game. I always like midday games.

I would be EXTREMELY happy with six points in these last six games. I wouldn't be surprised if, between Minnesota and North Dakota, we get a total of 2 points. I see no reason not to sweep Anchorage, but I also see no reason why we shouldn't have swept CC, and several other teams that we didn't sweep. Like you, maybe I'm being overly negative, but to me, anything more than 5 total points the rest of the season is more than I expect.

I would love to eat my hat.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Its been sold out for quite some time. Guessing you'll have to really step up your offer.

I was able to pick up 4 seats in Section 3, row 3 for face value ($38) this weekend on Stubhub. Pretty good timing, as it was the only one under $60 a seat.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

The thing that concerns me with the North Dakota series - and always does anytime we play them, is DU taking stupid penalties. You know it's going to be physical. They could be once again, leaning heavily on Juho to see them through next weekend. If someone like Mayfield or Makowski get all wrapped up in the drama..... decide to do some big hitting or after-whistle swinging... maybe they get kicked out..... now, you put Juho right on the hotseat. I just want a smart series. I foesee a split with UND and a split with UM.

I think if you could name 2 problems that have absolutely killed a team that we saw a good deal more talent from at the beginning of the season than I expected, it would be bad penalties and bad turnovers in the defensive zone. I really believe that if these guys went through the whole season without these two things (and I don't mean none at all, but, you know, the low number you want from a talented team), the team is top 10 in PWR right now, and probably top 5. As is, I hope we go to the Final 5 (especially since I am going), and I hope we go to the NCAAs but I wouldn't put any money on EITHER of those things.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Congratulations to Drew Shore on his 1st NHL goal
Drew had an assist earlier--Multi-Point game

Box Score
3rd Period 06:25

FLA

Drew Shore (1) Tip-In - Assists: J. Skille (1)

Unfortunately Florida lost 6-5 on OT--that score sound familiar:(
