Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

DU sits at 12 in the PWR at this moment. Quite a few scores not in for the night, though.

Tied for 11th with NoDak. We win the tie breaker with a single point in RPI.

Two points tonight would put us in a tie with Gophs for 3rd in WCHA.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

I wasn't able to post much in the game thread tonight. I think that whoever posted about Gwoz not being too happy about the undisciplined penalties is certainly right. That wasn't a pretty win, and it wasn't BC, but you can only play the team that's on your schedule, you only have to win by one goal, and it don't matter how you get it. Right now all that matters are the Ws, and the guys got two of them. I'll take 'em.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

DU Tied for 10th in PWR with NoDak, BU, and Alaska (RPI 10, 11, 14 and 19 respectively)

Shouldn't we be higher or am I missing something. I'm looking at the Colgate comp and the cop seems incorrect. When I went to school. 2-1-0 was better than 1-1-1.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Tuned into the radio on the way home, DU down 3-1, Stickney says time is running out on the Pioneers. Thought seriously about turning off the radio, to avoid the frustration. Glad I kept it on for the next 91 seconds. Amazing, and boy does that have to sting for UMD to blow a game like that. Great resilience from DU, further reinforcement that they are never out of a game.

Yeah, I'm pretty much a huge fan of UMD 3-1 leads in the third period. As DG said to me in the third period in Boston in 2004--"we got em right where we want em."

Here you go...

Historical Timeline - Relevant CHN Articles

2011-12
•Record vs. Common Opponents is now calculated by averaging the winning percentage against each individual opponent, instead of an overall win pct.

vs Cornell: Colgate .250, DU 1.000
vs Yale: Colgate 1.000, DU .000
Avg win%: Colgate .625, DU .500

When you went to school is irrelevant. ;)

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Congrats are in order--Drew Shore gets an apple, his first NHL point, in Florida's win over Buffalo.

BTW Drew's AHL All Star Jersey currently has a high bid of $539.
Zucker and Donovan in the $265-$275 range

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Pairwise
Sat. night==DU Tied for 10th in PWR with NoDak, BU, and Alaska
Sun afternoon--10. NoDak 11. BU 12. DU 13. Mankato 14. Alaska

Note to JMF: Colgate is now #17.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Looking for an answer to a trivia question from one of the DU alums (I'm not one) or a long-time fan (I am one of those, had season tix in the old barn for 15 years or so through the 80's to mid-90's). Shortly before we moved from Denver to the north woods of upper MI, there was a kid on the team from Alaska, a highly-touted recruit, who was nicknamed "the Chocolate Rocket." He never panned out as much of a player, quick but no finishing skills, and left school early (maybe some off-ice trouble, I seem to recall). My wife and I were watching a game this weekend and he came up in conversation. Can one of you give me his name? Thanks in advance for answering one of those lingering trivia things that won't go away till answered. And congrat's Pie's on the Saturday rally, and condolences to Coach Gwozdecky.

I would assume you are talking about Maurice Hall. He was a highly-touted player but after his freshman year, he went home to Alaska and ended up with a rape charge. He was never convicted but he was not allowed to leave Alaska while the whole process took place(like 2 years or something), so his career at DU was ended pretty quick.

Yep, that's him! Thanks, Chris, for the quick reply. A borderline interesting footnote in my years following DU while living in Denver. And one of those names that wouldn't quite make it to the forefront of my gray matter. (Now I can sleep...)

This article has a little tidbit on Maurice Hall. The notion that his prosecution was racially motivated is an old one. The supposed victim was a white girl with a connected dad, from what I heard. I know he had a hung jury but was retried something like 2 or 3 times, with a hung jury every time.

My dad and I sat next to Art Berglund (head of USA Hockey at that time) at a DU/CC game in the Springs during his freshman year and Berglund was there personally scouting Hall. The dude had, at that time, a potentially very bright future hockey career and it has always appeared that it was taken from him over total nonsense.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Last time DU went 4-0-0 against CC in the regular season?

1988-89 when Backstrom was coach.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

And then there's rookie Drew Shore who has been extremely difficult to beat in the circle as he has won 63.5% of his face-off draws (52 opportunities), good enough for seventh best in the league for players that have had at least 45 opportunities. Shore gives credit to his fellow centers as well as his approach.

"They've kind of helped me and you pick out the little things from different guys," said Shore on his success. "It's something, especially after turning pro last year, you realize how an impact little things like that can impact a game...if you think of 10 more puck possessions for your team throughout the night, it's obviously an important thing."
"You can tell by the way he goes in there, he takes a lot of pride and wants to win those draws, like everyone," said Smithson. "He's doing well and hopefully he continues that."

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Basketball Bracketbusters announced on ESPNU today at 6:30. My sources tell me we will either be at Belmont or Long Beach State.
