Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Can someone explain to me why we have four goalies? Is it just due to the fact we haven't had a truly consistent goaltender in several years?

Unless one of the new guys tears it up in practice, this is probably the Jones/Jenks show again. My guess is one or both of the freshmen get stashed on the practice squad to hone their skills and compete for the 2 spot next year when Jones is graduated and Jenks is theoretically the number 1. Jenks has three more years of eligibility, so basically we are set for goalies for the next four years, assuming none of them leave because they aren't playing right away.

Also, I think UAA is carrying four goalies as well. Which is even weirder because Mantha is a very clear #1 guy.

Enough about funding, what about hockey. One week until the Blue/Gold game.

The Nooks appear to have a solid incoming class of freshmen. I’m sure hard working young men ready to make their mark in college hockey. Many have decent Jr hockey stats, which does not necessarily mean much in the college game.

With only three available upper classmen on defense, and only five forward upperclassmen, the recruits will get a baptism by fire. Point production by returning Nook upperclassmen is nothing to write home about, so we need meaningful production from our underclassmen. A lot to ask. It’s cliché to say, but this group must certainly play an unselfish, defensive, team game and get outstanding goaltending if they are to have any success.

Go Nooks!

I think we will lose a lot of games in October and November, but won't be surprised if things pick up after the break. I've heard the phrase "addition by subtraction" used more than once this offseason, so if these new guys can gel I think we'll be in good shape by the end of the season.

Looks like 3 for UAA according to the website. I don't remember if we have ever had 4 at once so that's the only reason I asked.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

We are probably in the middle of the pack regarding strength of conference schedule. Looks to me like BSU and UAH have the toughest rotation, and BGSU and MTU not so much. BSU plays four of last year’s top five teams x4. The Nooks play two of last year’s top five teams x4, and plays three of last year’s bottom five teams x4. Conference SOS doesn't mean that much. You better be ready to play every game.

You missed the memo. .......dim Johnson has twitter'd the ncaa to have them adjust their rules to go with Butterbean's 2 2 2 Basic Defense System. the goalies change up with the wings but can't cycle out with the d's.

Picked between 8th and 10th by all the experts. In other words, we have them right where we want them.

We both need winning seasons to put people in the stands.
Other than the obvious I hope the Nooks have a winning season.
Probably take a lot of ---- for saying that.
It's a great day to be a Seawolf!

I would love to finish 1-2 year in and year out. Sadly it's not going to start this year. I do think we will be better than what people will think this season, but the first couple months are going to be tough.

Supporters of College Athletics in Alaska

Your hard efforts in support of athletics paid off at the Regents meeting in Juneau. The Regents passed a recommendation 11 to 0 with one abstention to find a way to continue funding athletics. This was a huge accomplishment but it needs to be recognized by your letters, emails, phone calls thanking the regents for their support. In addition Governor Bill Walker also supported college athletics. Let us not lose our support and each of you and your friends thank these folks for their support. Perhaps someone can encourage the resources owned by the University as a land grant institution to start earning income from those resources. Just help them find a way to increase funding for the University or how to cut costs maintaining athletics.

Lots going on so a little late in posting Blue/Gold Game photos. Here are just a few from Saturday night’s scrimmage. I don’t know enough to evaluate players, especially in this type of game. Play was a bit reserved so no one would get hurt, but I was pleasantly surprised. With twelve freshman we will struggle early on, but hopefully we put it all together for a playoff spot.

Our exhibition game is against Simon Fraser on Sunday, October 2, 3:07pm., at the Carlson Center.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

The Nooks won a hard fought game against Simon Fraser Sunday afternoon 2-0. Can’t say it was overly exciting, but it sure served it’s purpose. The Nooks got better each period. The first ten minutes looked like everyone was just trying to get their first few shifts under their belt without embarrassing themselves. But as the game went on the Nooks calmed down and pretty much controlled play, and took the opportunity to play thee goalies. The only disappointing aspect of the game was the number of unnecessary penalties we took, with two being really dumb ones away from the play by a couple of our seniors. Here are a few shots from this afternoon.

Early on SFU got their chances as the Nooks looked a little disorganized. But Jones was up to the task…
<a href="https://mmf.smugmug.com/All-Galleries/Alaska-Nanook-Hockey/2016-17-Season/UAF-vs-Simon-Fraser-Oct-2-2016/i-XVfCbXk/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/All-Galleries/Alaska-Nanook-Hockey/2016-17-Season/UAF-vs-Simon-Fraser-Oct-2-2016/i-XVfCbXk/0/L/20161002-23-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

After the first ten minutes, the Nooks settled down, started controlling play, and also got a number of good chances…
<a href="https://mmf.smugmug.com/All-Galleries/Alaska-Nanook-Hockey/2016-17-Season/UAF-vs-Simon-Fraser-Oct-2-2016/i-Rxm2bPQ/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/All-Galleries/Alaska-Nanook-Hockey/2016-17-Season/UAF-vs-Simon-Fraser-Oct-2-2016/i-Rxm2bPQ/0/L/20161002-60-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

The Nooks continued to get better in the second period, and called on Jenks to keep SFU off the board…
<a href="https://mmf.smugmug.com/All-Galleries/Alaska-Nanook-Hockey/2016-17-Season/UAF-vs-Simon-Fraser-Oct-2-2016/i-x9Bn9Mt/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/All-Galleries/Alaska-Nanook-Hockey/2016-17-Season/UAF-vs-Simon-Fraser-Oct-2-2016/i-x9Bn9Mt/0/L/20161002-129-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

Kylar Hope opened the scoring with this unassisted wrap around with about five minutes left in the second period…
<a href="https://mmf.smugmug.com/All-Galleries/Alaska-Nanook-Hockey/2016-17-Season/UAF-vs-Simon-Fraser-Oct-2-2016/i-2XcJzt4/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/All-Galleries/Alaska-Nanook-Hockey/2016-17-Season/UAF-vs-Simon-Fraser-Oct-2-2016/i-2XcJzt4/0/L/20161002-137-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

John Mullally had a ring side seat as Chad Staley (from Jenks, Koberstein) made it 2-0 two minutes later…
<a href="https://mmf.smugmug.com/All-Galleries/Alaska-Nanook-Hockey/2016-17-Season/UAF-vs-Simon-Fraser-Oct-2-2016/i-B4mtQrW/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/All-Galleries/Alaska-Nanook-Hockey/2016-17-Season/UAF-vs-Simon-Fraser-Oct-2-2016/i-B4mtQrW/0/L/20161002-153-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

Taylor Munson and the Nooks continued to put on pressure in the third…
<a href="https://mmf.smugmug.com/All-Galleries/Alaska-Nanook-Hockey/2016-17-Season/UAF-vs-Simon-Fraser-Oct-2-2016/i-vF4Vz4R/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/All-Galleries/Alaska-Nanook-Hockey/2016-17-Season/UAF-vs-Simon-Fraser-Oct-2-2016/i-vF4Vz4R/0/L/20161002-205-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

And Della-Maggiore and Nooks were able to hold on for the 2-0 shutout.

Good Job Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Great game NANOOKS! I thought the boys skated well tonight and the passing was consistently on target. Watched the last two periods on tv tonight, looking forward to seeing them back home next weekend! Too bad they couldn't hold on for Jones to get the shutout. Keep skating hard and let's take care of the gophers tomorrow!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Scoring early definitely helped build confidence. Solid offense AND defense has been a problem in past seasons so it's nice to see good defense and high scoring. Can't wait for tomorrow!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

One weekend does not a season make (yoda-esk). But even this old grumpy guy was pretty pleased with the opening weekend. For a team with 12 freshmen (19 underclassmen) we looked like we kind of knew what we were doing out there, and everybody seemed to be on the same page*. Good job to both players and coaches.

We once again have pretty good team speed, and actually used that speed in the pace of the game, which is not always the case. Definitely out-skated UAA and held our own against the Gophers. We don’t really have any individual super-stars, but both team defense and team offense somewhat clicked for the start of the season. Our transition and speed across the blue line in these early games was a pleasant surprise. We looked decent both games. Need to work on special teams.

*…getting a chuckle about “style of play” comments in another thread. This past weekend just goes to show that maybe “team play” is the first and most important style of play.

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

I think we found a few gems in this rookie class. Tristan Thompson is everything you want in a defenseman for this type of system. Leiter, Van Tetering, Hope, etc. All will shape to become solid support players.

But like you said, no super stars. But Chad Staley may turn out to be one. Time will tell

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Hi All,

I'm looking for visitor recommendations. I'll be coming up to AK for the Michigan Tech double weekends vs UAA and UAF. I'm planning to fly into Anchorage for the first series, maybe** drive (is a 4WD vehicle going to be needed this time of year?) my way to Fairbanks over the course of the week as I [please provide any recommendations of what to do here] and finally arrive the following Friday for the Tech series vs UAF. On Sunday following the second UAF game I'll be driving back** to Anchorage to catch a late Sunday redeye back to the lower 48.

** One thing I really wanted to do was rent the car one-way from Anchorage to Fairbanks and then take the railroad back. The one way drop fee is over $300 plus the return train ticket which is almost $200. Not really an expense that will be in my budget on top of 10 days in AK. Is there a reasonable way to get from Anchorage to Fairbanks via public transportation? I could always rent one car in Anchorage and return it and then get a separate rental in Fairbanks if there was a way to get North before Friday night. (I see the train only runs North on Sat during the Winter season). Greyhound doesn't seem to exist North of the lower 48 but there are dozens of Alaska bus lines (any recommended going between ANC-FAI airports)?

Any other recommendations for things to do, things to see, seasonal transportation requirements, lodging suggestions (especially during the week near either city), etc. Looking forward to getting back to Anchorage and seeing Fairbanks for the first time. Feel free to post your suggestions here (at the risk of boring the locals) or email me directly at info@johnsonsjerseys.net - thanks!

Ryan J
