Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

...there is a definite talent gap.

There is a talent gap between MSU and and almost all the teams in our conference. I think we will do OK with the rank and file of the WCHA, but our goal tending (once again) has got to be better.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Was just looking at the stat sheet from last night and can honestly say that was one of the worst drubbings at our expense in a long time. Outshot 45-16. But hey, we scored a shortie when it was 5-0.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Pretty demoralizing 7-1 beat-down by MSU last night. The Nooks didn’t deserve to be down 3-0 after one, but it took the wind out of our sails and we weren’t in the game the rest of the way. MSU is pretty fast, but speed wasn’t the issue. They just have better and more skilled players. We’re going to have to stay out of the box and get better goaltending to stay in the game, much less have a chance to get any points.

We were the aggressor for the first few shifts…

We were getting our chances and looked decent for maybe the first seven minutes…

But the wheels started coming off with this first period goal from Coatta…

This goal by Rivera from a defensive miscue made it 2-0…

This was the stage just before their third goal by Michaelis, making it 3-0…

Rivera got his second goal about twelve minutes into the second period, making it 5-0 MSU…

The Mavericks kept the pressure on in the second, and eventually scored two more pp goals in the third to complete the route.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Nooks keys to win
Better goal tending
All players must have laser beam like focus on D zone responsibilities
Get pucks threw N zone and deep into O zone
Big time forecheck which will produce significantly more SOGs
Screen goalie & look for rebounds

+ Stay out of the box, which was a large part of our SOG problem last night...except for the shorty.

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Both Munson and Vieth are out Saturday night with injuries

So we will start:
6 freshmen and 3 sophomores at forward
1 freshman and 2 sophomores at defense
Sophmore goaltender

The game could be over quick, but still be another long night.
Hang in there boys.
Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

The Nooks are still up 3-2 with about 7:00 left in the third, but the Nooks have taken three straight stupid, selfish penalties away from the play. Wise up boys.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Nooks take down MSU 4-2 in the Saturday night rematch. Not pretty but got'r done. Way to scrap boys.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Stupid penalties or not, what a bounce back. Great to see the freshmen step up big. Nice win.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

That was a big win. I continue to be impressed with our team play for such a young squad. Everybody pulls their weight and everyone seems to be on the same page. Hope we get everyone back soon.

Next up is our first road trip of the year against a hot and much improved Laker squad.

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

What a game!! Glad to see no power play goals against tonight, even though the mavericks had it in the zone forever. Great hustle tonight by the boys and solid goaltending. Four games against ranked opponents in the first six, and only one of them (last night) were we dominated. Let's continue to be better and get some points next week at Lake State! Go Nanooks!!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Excellent win.
Good things happen when they move their feet.
Their rewarded effort is just what the doctor ordered as they head out on the road.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

While I feel for the programs under the ax, hopefully some of the nonsense about hockey going away in Alaska will start to die down. From what I know, at least at UAF hockey was never seriously considered for cuts. It's too important to the campus identity and part of our history...we've had a hockey team since about the 1930's.
