Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

I saw something on KTVA Channel 11 news about UAA Hockey Alumni getting together to see what it will take to save UAA Hockey. Not sure what will come out of it, but it is good to see something happening!

There are a lot of very committed alumni ... many former players are still in the Anchorage and Valley areas, and very active in the hockey community.

Fillipenko wasn't too concerned with damaging the program a couple of years ago with his nonsense about Cobb. Hopefully he isn't involved at all with any current Alumni efforts or it's done for sure.

It wasn't just Fillipenko ... almost all of the former players very much disliked Cobb. The email I received came from Jimmy Dahl, who is now the president of the alumni association.

This is the email I received.

A MESSAGE FROM THE UAA HOCKEY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
For those that are unaware, the situation appears to be dire for the program. However, no final decisions have been made; there is still a lot we can do to influence the decision making process by expressing the importance of UAA Hockey to the university and the community. The event Tuesday is intended to unite the whole hockey community and express a strategy to show the university the community does care. If there was ever a time in the history of the Seawolf program to show support, it is now. Please don’t stand idle. Those that are in town, please come down and show your support for the Green & Gold, and encourage others to do the same.

One last thing that anyone can do from anywere, is provide written feedback. Please use the following link to express your feelings on the situation: Strategic Pathways Phase One Feedback. Additional information on situation here: Review Team Reports. Please contact me if you have questions, concerns or would like more information.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Some chatter in the Anchorage thread about people buying UAA season tickets and doing other things to try and save the hockey program there--what's going on in Fairbanks? (Besides today's forum at the Wood Center, that is)

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

I hope your program stays. Considering Findley and Wayne State, I agree with Suze - once its gone its gone for good. Hopefully club hockey would survive. On the hopeful side Huntsville and Bowling Green almost went under.

If they dropped to club, who would they play?

Can't really compare the BG/UAH and Alaska situations. The state of Ohio wasn't threatening college athletics.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Good showing of athletic (and hockey) support during the BOR public testimony session yesterday afternoon, for both programs.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Here is a snap shot of what the WCHA teams look like. I haven’t tried to second guess what the polls might say, other than the Nooks will be in the bottom three, maybe last. That’s what the data would indicate so it’s up to them to prove the data wrong.

<a href="https://mmf.smugmug.com/All-Galleries/Alaska-Nanook-Hockey/201617-Hockey-GIFS/n-wMqVcn/i-c7SFwkB/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-c7SFwkB/0/XL/i-c7SFwkB-XL.png" alt=""></a>

This chart is probably only reasonably accurate. I haven’t monitored team sites once they put their initial rosters up. Other than the Nooks, I haven’t tried to determine who didn’t come back from last year except seniors, so “lost scoring” may be off. I made that adjustment for three Nooks not coming back (I see that UAF transfer Jason Fernsler is on the FSU roster). Returning goalies is just my guess. All roster data is from team sites.

Nooks could be in for a long year. Looks like we lost the most scoring by far, 52% from a team that struggled last year. We have the most freshmen. Tied for most underclassmen in numbers, but a lower % than LSSU. We only have three senior forwards. We have no senior defensemen, and maybe only three available juniors. We are heavy on NAHL talent, and recruiting won’t be getting any easier (or maybe extremely easy).

In other words, we have nothing to lose but pride, and everything to gain. We have this conference just where we want them…

Go Nooks!

I can live with no expectations, because I think there was some addition by subtraction this offseason.

Thanks for doing the hard work to pull that together. I had been putting it off.
