Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

I don't think these are well thought out conspiracies or anything, just how they eventually may play out.
In the end I can see athletics only at UAA as a member of GNAC (no hockey).

I agree with this. Everything else is just fluff. I think with the constraints UA has been given by the legislature, this is what is going to end up. They have no care in the world about university sports. Even smalls states like Wyoming and Montana care more about their athletics than Alaska. It is very pathetic.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

I don't understand why UAA athletics would be shut down instead of UAF.
It's cheaper to travel to Anchorage and there's a larger population base to support the programs.

Not sure I understand your question. They are considering shutting down all sports at both schools, and other options in between.

Or do you mean why don’t they leave UAA alone and just shut down UAF now. The difference in travel costs between Anchorage and Fairbanks is immaterial in the grand scheme of things, and the larger population base stays home.

So they are back to considering all options.

*potential to support UAA programs, Women's BB has been better than the men for almost a decade and they still barely outdraw them (~2000 in a 5000 seat arena)

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

I've known this was coming for a while now. My guess is one of the Option 3 variances is what happens but who knows.

To say I'm ashamed of the people who are pushing this (legislators, Johnsen, certain high level UA administrators) would be an understatement. Athletics is not the effing problem, but it can sure be part of the solution. I've already made it abundantly clear that I will pull every penny of my academic donations if they cut athletics at UAF.

The time for public comment is now. Doesn't matter if you're a Nanook or a Seawolf. Fight back or something that we all love dearly is going to cease to exist at the whim of a vocal minority.

I wrote to all of the Alaska legislators and one of them asked me to write a letter to the editor of the ADN. Not sure what good that would do.

Your one letter to a representative is just that. One to the ADN may spur dozens/hundreds more. Politicians like to use the media. :)

I've been told one of the best things anyone can do right now is submit comment through the Strategic Pathways website.

Here's a News Miner article that discusses why: Possible loss of big-ticket UA athletics draws comments

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

I'm happy to say we're traveling up again for the double weekend over thanksgiving again. Looking forward to and hope the legislature doesn't stop it from happening in the future! I think we'll have to have a "Without athletics we'd not be in Alaska" sign to bring with us :)

The problem with that sign is that the people that you want to see it won't be attending the games.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Pretty bleak. I am not encouraged by any of this. :-(

Now the brain trust has picked up a black hole in the "Art Bell" wire center, that will probably suck up the rest of the athletics budget. and a **** load more.

While I DO NOT agree to eliminate any of our hockey programs, I think if we keep UAF as status quo and eliminate hockey at UAA to replace with Soccer in the GNAC, is not a win, but is the best outcome that we can hope for. I would rather one hockey program remain in
Alaska then eliminate both programs. Maybe sometime in the future Hockey at UAA would be able to come back.

I mean I don't know...this is really tough pill to swallow.

Athletics in general isn't coming back if it all goes away. The only scenario I could see a return is many years down the road UAA might be able to pull it off with the larger pool of potential corporate support in Anchorage. If it gets cut in Fairbanks then it's gone forever at UAF, IMO. And that's assuming single accreditation doesn't come into play.

I also wonder if Johnsen is going to even keep his job more than a year from now. If he gets let go, the damage will likely have already been done.

I saw something on KTVA Channel 11 news about UAA Hockey Alumni getting together to see what it will take to save UAA Hockey. Not sure what will come out of it, but it is good to see something happening!
