Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

I can live with no expectations, because I think there was some addition by subtraction this offseason.

That is what I have heard.
We have no marquee players. This group needs to play as a team and out-work other teams if they are to have any success.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

The UAF women's hockey club team plays in the ACHA. No reason to not think a men's club program wouldn't play in the ACHA as well.

If they both went to ACHA they'd play each other (Anchorage and Fairbanks), plus the types of teams that the women's club team are able to find.

As long as you play against at least one different school regularly it's club, if you only play against your schoolmates then it's intramural.

Somebody jerk his man card.

Here is a snap shot of what the WCHA teams look like. I haven’t tried to second guess what the polls might say, other than the Nooks will be in the bottom three, maybe last. That’s what the data would indicate so it’s up to them to prove the data wrong.

This chart is probably only reasonably accurate.

Really?

Really!
You can’t blame me if teams make last minute roster changes.
Believe it or not, some programs don’t even know if they have suspended recruiting or not, so I have no idea how accurate their roster data is.

Like you have a life...... retired, no friends.....on the dole from the state like almost all villagers do, you earned it, most haven't seen a 40 hr job in their life and no aspiration if one showed up. So take that laptop you got off deal dash.com for 13.39 and free shipping to the "mall" Which by the way is one of the hottest hotspots in _airbanks. I heard it's like " Pokémon Grand Central Station" but when no good " pickin" loads" are coming in.......... hash tag, twitter, instant message, face time, Personal message, email, voicemail, tweet, Fax, Face Book, Or Blow their *** up on their local Craigslist Rants and Raves (somehow they will find that message) and demand for update's before they happen ...................trust me on this one.

For a guy who lives in the biggest village in Alaska you sure do seem upset about them.

Johnsen's recommendations are posted on the Strategic Pathways website. He is officially pushing either a 10 team waiver or a consortium model, either pending NCAA approval.

Johnsen's recommendations are posted on the Strategic Pathways website. He is officially pushing either a 10 team waiver or a consortium model, either pending NCAA approval.

Here is my take on the whole thing and the “slide” related to athletics that President Johnson will present to the BOR today. With all due respect to Johnson, it says almost nothing. I looked at the other slides as well and they also provide almost no insight into what the backroom discussions are really about.

If the caps on state funding (50% of 2016 levels by 2020 and 0% by 2025) are really a mandate, then pull the plug.

I see little chance that the NCAA would waive the ten sport requirement, or allow a UAA/UAF consortium the way we envision to do it. This is the proposed option probably because it is politically acceptable, but not realistic.
The last step with regards to strategic pathways direction is “if waiver or consortium unsuccessful, consider modifying existing programs to reduce cost and/or elimination of 1 or both programs.” Duh!

I can’t imagine the BOR taking any specific action in November based on these recommendation, unless they muster the hutzpah to cut athletics at Fairbanks only. It sounds like they will just continue to whittle away at athletic budgets and let the programs die on the vine. UAF’s will die much quicker than UAAs because they operate on the edge now. After UAF exhaust life support and pulls the plug, south centric legislative support will rally and decide we need to save athletics, but only at UAA. After all, it would be a shame to let the Alaska Airlines Center go dark except for Bierber concerts and quiche parties.

Eventually, south centric legislators will get what they want. We may go through a painful route, but I do not believe we will have a university without athletics at all. Not sure if hockey survives.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Yikes, I was hoping to come on here and see a bunch of ideas and positive attitudes. Hoping to see strong support from both fan bases this year!!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Matt Buxton posted this on twitter: "UA Regents are moving to say don't eliminate sports under any circumstances. #akleg #akgov"

That makes me feel a little better!

Motion was passed by the Regents to direct management (I.e. Johnsen) to continue developing options to avoid the elimination of any athletic programs.

Like I said, this fight ain't over.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Enough about funding, what about hockey. One week until the Blue/Gold game.

The Nooks appear to have a solid incoming class of freshmen. I’m sure hard working young men ready to make their mark in college hockey. Many have decent Jr hockey stats, which does not necessarily mean much in the college game.

<a href="https://mmf.smugmug.com/All-Galleries/Alaska-Nanook-Hockey/201617-Hockey-GIFS/n-wMqVcn/i-3CFWwf7/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-3CFWwf7/0/M/i-3CFWwf7-M.jpg" alt=""></a>

With only three available upper classmen on defense, and only five forward upperclassmen, the recruits will get a baptism by fire. Point production by returning Nook upperclassmen is nothing to write home about, so we need meaningful production from our underclassmen. A lot to ask. It’s cliché to say, but this group must certainly play an unselfish, defensive, team game and get outstanding goaltending if they are to have any success.

Go Nooks!

Can someone explain to me why we have four goalies? Is it just due to the fact we haven't had a truly consistent goaltender in several years?

I would guess that one of the young men truly loves the game, is not afraid of hard work, realizes the importance of a good education, and probably receives little to no financial support. Stranger things have happened and you never know when you might get your chance. Hope is naturally inspiring.

Either that or it is plainly obvious that none of our coaches were math majors. :)

So in summary, I don't know either.

Go Nooks!
