Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

I'd say Mt. Royal isn't the usual exhibition pushover. Big and physical, but not very disciplined. The first goal that was waved off was an obvious kick, I didn't get a good look at the second one.

Nooks looked like a team that hadn't played hockey since March in the 1st, but started to settle down in the 2nd.

Nice ovation for Justin Woods.

Great game! I can understand why SOGs were so low for UAA. Mt.Royal has a very strong defensive game. Nooks seemed like they were able to learn the Cougars game after the first period. The penalties didn't help the Cougars out either. I like Jenks so far from what I've seen. I also like Leer and Mullally as well for freshmen. Excited for the season!

Yeah, and Krieger is going to have a breakout year. He's got that surge of speed to go with his skills.

Watch Burns too on defense, he was rocking pretty hard early in the game.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

The Nooks persevered for a 4-0 victory over Mt. Royal University in Sunday afternoon’s exhibition game. All three Nook goalies played a period, and goals from Ryker Leer, Peter Krieger (1 goal & 2 assists), Tyler Morley and an empty netter by Josh Erickson sealed the deal. There were glimpses of what we hope the Nooks will become, but overall I thought we were out-played by the Cougars. They were more physical, won most the puck battles, and had pretty good defense and transition games, but just couldn’t bury the puck. The Cougars out-shot the Nooks 37-22 and had two goals waived off. We’ll take the win, but it was a really good test for the Nooks, and gives the team and coaches lots to improve upon.

I thought Austin Vieth had a strong overall game and really hustled on the forecheck…

And Josh Erickson was his typical energized self…

Davis Jones faced a number of good scoring chances by the Cougars…

And likewise, Nolan Huysmans and the Nooks had their chances…

The Cougars were not quite as disciplined as sometimes they needed to be…

Freshman Ryker Leer with help from Tayler Munson fought hard to put the Nooks up 1-0, as shown in this three shot series…

Freshman goalie Jesse Jenks stood strong during the second period, with lots of action up close and personal, including facing a 5x3 Cougar powerplay…

Goalie John Keeney came in and faced a number of tough shots in the third, but kept the Cougars off the scoreboard…

Tyler Morley was able to bury the puck past the goalies stick side and put the Nooks up 3-0 with this follow up off a blast by Peter Krieger…

The Cougars pulled their goalie but Keeney finished strong and stymied the extra man attacks until Josh Erickson put the Nooks up 4-0 with an empty-netter.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Love it. The guys definitely got things going after the first period and dialed things in for the third.

At first I was surprised the Cougars could keep up and skate with the Nooks, but they wore down as the game went on.

Should be a good season. Are your predictions intact from Saturday?

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Over the next two weekends the Nooks will get a chance to tighten up play before they start their conference schedule. Lots of things to work on.

Both the Kendall and the Brice are great opportunities to help us get a strong start in conference play. Over the last seven years, the Nooks are a combined 19-5-4 in the two tourneys, taking championship trophies eight times. We’ve scored 83 goals and given up 50, for a GF avg of about 3.0 and a GA avg of about 1.8. We have never lost a first round match up in either tourney, but this year that will be a tough stat to hold on to. We face a very strong St. Cloud State team in our first round game at the Kendall.

Up first is the Kendall Classic. Here is what our history at the Kendall looks like.

Go Nooks!

Go Nooks!

St. Cloud is definitely the one I'm most concerned about. We shouldn't have too much trouble with ASU, RPI, and AIC.

Parayko is officially on the Blues' opening night roster. Which surprises nobody.

I have never heard of either restaurants in the reddit review.

Are they any good?

Salmon Bake is seasonal so only open from May to September. It is kind of useless in the winter time to point out that it is not far from the Carlson but it is located next to Pioneer Park (Alaskaland).

Wolf Run is pretty popular locally. Known for good desserts, I haven't been there but it's what I have heard.

Wolf Run is kind of a hippie joint. Looks like something from Girdwood or Juneau. Good food but you better like quiche. Silver Gulch is my favorite pregame hangout even though it's a little ways from the arena. Hoodoo is probably the best pregame beer joint but they don't have food.

Good dessert and quiche. Sounds like a must try.
