Sorry MUnRPI...stayed in Fairbanks. The farthest I can shoot is Russia from my back yard, I can't quite focus in on Oxford. :) But glad you enjoy them.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Last night's tie against OSU was a disappointing finish. With no video it's hard to say much, but giving up two, two goal leads and getting dominated in the third does not sound good. We're starting to develop a team identity, which unfortunately is to turtle up defensively and give up the lead.

We skate strong for two periods and out-shoot OSU 22-14, build two goal leads, and then turtle up. Even when skating 5x5 we often look like we are on the PK. We did the same thing with NMU. We settle back and let teams work the corners and set up shots. "Let" is the key word here. We don't have the big slow players of yester-year. We have skilled players and very good team speed. I guess I just don't understand the finer strategic points of the game.

Maybe it's hard to argue against a strategy that keeps us as one of the top defensive teams in the country, but when you're one of the least productive teams offensively the margin of error is frustrating.

Even OSU's players noted that "...by the third period they were sitting back giving us many chances...

Bottom line is when other teams kick it up a notch, we don't respond. In fact we sit back and give them ample opportunities to succeed.

Still lots of season left, but we need to stay aggressive all game. We need to be the team that finishes every game with increased energy, not hanging on. We have the talent, but do we have the heart. Gut check time tonight boys.

Go Nooks!

Gusty game by the Nooks tonight, besting OSU 5-2. The Nooks trailed 2-0 but scored the final 5 goals, including 4 in the 3rd. Way to dig deep and pick it it up in thre 3rd Nooks. The Nooks did it without Taranto, Petovello, and Quinn, who were out with injuries.

The Nooks were outshot 39-29, but Greenham played well. A real team effort, with Nook goals by Finucci, Kunyk, Gehon, Meyers, and Beck.

Good job Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

The OSU tie was painful, not only for giving up the (extremely) late goal, but it also knocked us out of the top 16 in the PWR.

Next week doesn't get any easier against Ferris on the road...however, I think you have to give our guys credit because the last two road trips have both had "gut check" games...and both times we delivered. That two point home weekend against NMU might come back to haunt us, though.

I also think this team is still searching for that offensive "go-to" guy. The last couple of years it was Dion, and someone is going to have to step up and fill his shoes. The most obvious candidate is Taranto, but he's been banged up. It also doesn't help having Peto nursing some injuries as he's kind of evolved into the on-ice leader.

Don't know if any of the lurkers here have heard, but Coach Ferguson has has reportedly dismissed Sophomore defenseman Justin Daigle from the team, citing a violation of team rules.

Quite unfortunate, as I thought Justin had made great strides in improving his game since he's been in a Nanooks sweater. His decisions have been getting better, and he's been playing bigger. Granted, his ice time has been drastically reduced with the addition of Michael Quinn, and the demonstrated viability of Cody Butcher.

Whatever happened, it's unfortunate to lose him. If there was a lesson to be learned here, I hope he learned it. If I understand the rules correctly, a dismissal automatically forfeits the remainder of the current season of NCAA eligibility, but he could sign with another team and get on their roster as early as the start of next season.

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear that. Justin was probably my favorite player to talk to at team events -- he's very personable. Hard to imagine why he'd be dismissed when he was out with an injury and school wasn't even in session. There must be a very sad story here. Hope he's able to fix whatever's amiss. Best wishes for his future.

Hopefully Justin lands on his feet somewhere; everybody makes mistakes and it's how we atone for those mistakes that can improve perception. He must have done something pretty boneheaded to get kicked off the team on Christmas break. This is the first (public) player issue that we've seen in the Ferguson era, at least that I can recall.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Rumor has it we have a hockey team. Faint recognition is understandable when the last home game was Nov. 20th. I know all schools have been on break, but we've only played two games (home or away) since Thanksgiving weekend. Western, our upcoming opponent has played six games since then. Good thing our sweaters have names on the back, it would be embarrassing to hear the Coach yell "hey you", good play.

The Nooks are hanging around 15th in most the polls and WMU about 20th, but that means nothing. It seems like these teams are statistically fairly even. The Broncos have to travel and we'll be rusty, so this will probably be a tough, low scoring series. The Nooks really need a home sweep to stay in the hunt for an NCAA invite. After this home stance we take a two week road trip to face Notre Dame and Michigan. Could be a tough month for points and pairwise comparisons. The good news is that after that, three out of the last four series are at home. The next few series will tell if we'll be contenders or spoilers down the stretch.

Western just swept Union and we know how good Union can play. Let's hope there's not too much rust on the old skates. We really need to start another home winning streak if we want to go to the NCAAs.

WMU isn't the guaranteed 4 to 6 point weekend that it used to be. I'm glad we're at home but this won't be a pushover to start the 2nd half.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

I've been following Nook hockey since the 70's  (such as it was), and I can honestly say that I don't recall ever thinking anybody, even a rec league team, was an easy sweep. I have seen us clutch defeat from the jaws of victory more times and in more ways than I care to remember. :(

I'd like to think we can take two from the Broncos at home, but we are something like 9-6-2 with them over the last five years...hardly dominate. And Western has been rejuvenated. I'm sure both teams think this is a winnable series to start the second half.

My concern is the Nooks play a little too laid back. We play with a certain desperation against the likes of Miami and Michigan and sometimes pull out a win. But then we go winless against MSU and NMU. Frustrating. We can look fast and skilled at times, but somewhat blasé at others. This team has talent, but they need to kick it up a notch and keep it there all game.

That being said, Broncos suck. Nooks sweep...easily! ;)

I still think this year's squad is waiting for an alpha-dog to step up. Last year it was Dion. But I agree, we've seemed a little too laid back at times this year. Our best game by far, IMO, was the home W against Michigan where we brought the house for three straight periods. We've had too many 1 or 2 period games this year.

The injury to Petovello hurts, since he was starting to take over that role. I agree about the Friday night Michigan game. We played gritty and determined all game, and it showed. Michigan played much better Saturday, but we also lacked the spark we had Friday night.

Yes, everybody in college hockey fears the mythical creatures from E. Northern Lights Blvd.

A team full of Village dogs is usually not smart enough to be to be scared.
