Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Just for Info...talked with Kurt Haider, Voice of the Seawolves, and the UAA/Windsor game is being played in Soldotna, and is being broadcast on 1140 KSLD Soldotna. I guess they don't usually do the exhibition games on radio, but he's going down to do the game for KSLD to get warmed up for the Kendall. Don't know if KSLD streams or not....

I wonder if the attendance at the Patty Ice Arena included the UAF students who get in free. It was pretty packed but thinned out quite a bit in the 3rd period. and the sound system there pretty much sucks.

Last night's game against Windsor had a little bit of everything except suspense. Lots of man-advantages, two man-advantages, down a man, down two men, power-play goals, a short-handed goal, misconducts, and even some 5x5 play. Windsor opened play with a good scoring opportunity about 5 seconds in, but then it was all Nooks from there. The 9-0 rout was on.

The Alaska Nanooks Hockey Blog does a good job of re-capping the game.

Below are a few photos from last night.

Neither Greenham nor Thompson were really tested, facing only 9 shots all night...

Windsor had some big boys, but they were outmatched in speed and quickness...

The Nooks were able do a good job on the fore-check and back-check all game long...

Sather was able to gather this one in and bury it glove side high for goal #1...

Yaremchuk was able to hit the back of the net on this one for goal #3...

Taranto was looking for a rebound but never got the chance, as Petovello scored on the PP for goal #4...

Finucci picked up a shorty for goal #8...

And finally, Yaremchuk's second tally came on the PP for goal #9

We may not score nine goals in the next four games combined. Air Force, UND, Union, and CC are not Windsor.

Bruce said on the radio broadcast that the Patty was packed last night, but the box score said otherwise..
I have to believe the box score …. Attendance: 684

UAA/Windsor could be interesting for the fights that will probably happen.
UA_ up by Seven middle of the 3rd. somebody commits goaltender interference on a team that just needs an excuse to dance. UAA is a little smarter than that.

Believe the box score if you want, but it was wrong. The place was packed.

UAA a smart team? Really, they kill themselves with penalties! Ask Lafranchise how smart UAA is..........

Now the real test begins. The next four games will really expose any weaknesses in our play. The focus should be to get better each game. It's unfortunate that we haven't gotten any practice time on big ice this year. As I recall, the ice isn't going back in at the Carlson until the 6th, so they may not get a chance until they head south.

I plan to head down for the games. It will be fun watching the Nooks play on big ice in front of a raucous crowd. OK. Big ice.

The Kendall should be a good tourney. I have a ton of respect for the dedication required of Air Force Academy cadets to balance athletics and academics. And although I don't expect the Nooks to get any respect from UND, any team that the Seawolf fan base both despises but continues to fixate on can't be all bad. We'll see.

Go Nooks!

The word is the Nanook games from the Kendall Classic will be broadcast locally in Fairbanks on Fox 7, and chances are pretty good all 4 games will show up on GCI Cables' Channel 1 ! Drop of the puck for the Nooks on Friday is at 507 pm, and on Saturday at 407 pm. Could be a great weekend of Hockey! GO NOOKS !

Friday's game will be tape delayed. Sorry, I should have checked on that before I posted about it. Fox can't air it live due to programming commitments, but it will air tape delayed at 10PM, for those that don't have GCI cable.

GCI will broadcast all 4 games live on GCI Channel 1.

Went to the game last night nooks looked okay except for the second period where they looked a bit energized. Liked the freshmen, the D looked okay, but our special teams didn't look special. Taranto's penalty killing is sad, and Greenham didn't look like he was seeing the puck all that well. They play like that again and North Dakota will put up a five spot fast.

Good win Friday, but if you don't show up for 2 periods against the #2 team in the country and you'll get burned like tonight.

Learn from it and make it up next weekend.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Ok weekend. I didn't think we looked great all weekend. Greenham needs to control his rebounds. We were not even in the same building for two periods against UND tonight. Wwwwaaaaayyyyyy to many penalties all weekend. Kunyk looks good so far. I like Taranto, but I hope coach gets him off the PK. He is terrible out there. Watch Meyers, then Taranto......you'll see what I mean. It's almost like he doesn't want to be out there. He was standing still watching UND skate by him on the first PP goal. I think we had some really good moments, but have a ton to work on. I think we'll be fine, if we play like we did against UND in the 3rd, the rest of the season. GO NOOKS! Another super tough weekend coming up!

Should be interesting to see how we respond next week. The guys have made a lot of noise so far about skating hard for 60 minutes every night and that clearly didn't happen last night. UAA didn't do us any favors by stirring up that hornets nest on Friday, but regardless it was obvious UND wanted to dominate this one start to finish, and they didn't have much opposition along the way.

Which is one reason I am glad UAA got the "hard" team as their opponent on Friday. In previous years it was the other way around, resulting in the Nanooks winning the tourney.

I have seen UND about ten times here in Anchorage and thats the best I've seen them play defensively, it was like they had a five on four all night in their zone, just the opposite of Friday, not that we really tested them until the third period, and they got away with some cheap stuff after the whistle, Hextall is a hack, hope someone knocks the snot of him.

It's nice to see Brett has gained some more fans. :D

UND was awesome defensively because Hakstol probably threatened to leave the team in Anchorage after Friday's disaster.

Just back from the Kendall. Thanks to Alaska Hockey and the Seawolve boosters for their hospitality. Despite a tough second night for the Nooks, it was a good tourney for them.

They weren't ready for UND's physical play. They got better by the third but were still not strong on their skates. They may not see too many teams as physical and skilled as UND, but they better get used to the style of play. Way too much dinking around with the puck. Get it on net a go muck it up. Tough to make a living mucking it up with UND, but we'll need more grit if we're to be successful this year. Greenham was very average. We need him to be much sharper. But overall a lot of positives this weekend. We have the talent to do some damage and they are going to be a fun team to watch.

A few photos from the nose bleed section of UND game.

The tone was set early with a scrum or two in front of Greenham...

Interesting we had the gold jerseys both nights. Is this a new trend, or did they just not want to bring two sets of jerseys?
