Interesting we had the gold jerseys both nights. Is this a new trend, or did they just not want to bring two sets of jerseys?

I was wondering the same thing. Is this our new full-time home jersey, or are they just wearing them to the tournaments in addition to Saturdays?

Just back from the Kendall. Thanks to Alaska Hockey and the Seawolve boosters for their hospitality. Despite a tough second night for the Nooks, it was a good tourney for them.

They weren't ready for UND's physical play. They got better by the third but were still not strong on their skates. They may not see too many teams as physical and skilled as UND, but they better get used to the style of play. Way too much dinking around with the puck. Get it on net a go muck it up. Tough to make a living mucking it up with UND, but we'll need more grit if we're to be successful this year. Greenham was very average. We need him to be much sharper. But overall a lot of positives this weekend. We have the talent to do some damage and they are going to be a fun team to watch.

A few photos from the nose bleed section of UND game.

The tone was set early with a scrum or two in front of Greenham...

Nice game last night. We need to tighten up the PK. Otherwise, not to bad! Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

That was a pretty solid weekend of Hockey for the Nooks. Two quality wins against two quality teams. The Nooks definitely played stingy team defense and displayed excellent team speed and skating skills. They are going to be a fun team to watch this year. Greenham was very good, facing 46 shots and only giving up only two PP goals all weekend. Great job Nooks. Full team effort.

Now conference play starts. MSU is a solid club but these are the games we need to win to be a conference contender. We haven't fared well on the road in the recent past but that aspect of our game needs to change. If the boys want to get an invite back to the NCAAs they need to play every period like it means something, starting this weekend...on the road.

Here are a few photos from Saturday night against CC.

It was another closely contested game...

The Nooks worked hard on their forecheck and backcheck all night...

The Nooks created a number of good scoring chances by going strong to net, a play that hopefully pays more dividends as the season progresses...

CC had the same hopes, but good Nook defense limited their chances...

Greenham was solid all weekend, and was deservedly the tourneys most valuable player...

The game was generally cleanly and well played, but this is not the typical line up for the handshake you see after the final whistle.

Scott Greenham named INCH player of the week and well deserved. He looked very good this weekend as opposed to last weekend in Anchorage. Nooks looked better this weekend, but let too many opportunities go to waste with bad passes or not finishing.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Tough loss last night but it sounds like we really shot ourselves in the foot with penalties. Half the period in the box and 1 SOG in the 2nd won't get it done against anybody. But on the flip side, anytime you can pick up a couple points at Munn is a good time.

BGSU comes to town this weekend; we need to take care of business. This *should* be a 6 point weekend. Hopefully the guys remember going to BGSU this time last year and getting upset. It shouldn't happen again in Fairbanks.

I think that is an expectation from the past. I'm disappointed that we didn't take six points. The fact that we went winless is very disappointing. If we're happy to get two points on the road, at anyone's rink, then we will never be anything more than a middle of the pack CCHA team. Maybe that's our lot in life but I sure hope nobody tells the team that.

Hopefully this was a learning experience for the team. MSU came out focused in the second period and we didn't respond. MSU came out and dictated tempo, and we let them. Good teams make their own breaks. MSU did and we didn't. Good teams respond and regroup quickly. We didn't and MSU didn't have to.

I think we're a good team, but it sure didn't sound like it Saturday. Back-to-back tripping calls sounds like we were getting out worked. Contact to the head sounds like frustration from getting out worked. BG comes to town next week. Time for a good team to regroup.

We need a convincing win, but BG won't be easy. I'm sure they won't be happy for two points on the road. And considering our cluster, we can't afford giving up any points to BG. Time to see what we're made of. Or are we going to split points every series this season, regardless of who we play?

Go Nooks!

Nice post, mmf. I certainly don't think we should be happy with a two point weekend. From what I've seen (heard) so far, this is a team still looking for an identity. I sure hope it starts to figure things out fast because after BG the next two weeks are Michigan and at Miami.

For those of us who "live and die" for our favorite college hockey team, there comes a time when that is secondary. And that time came to Pioneer fans this weekend.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — University of Denver center Jesse Martin sustained three neck fractures in Saturday night's hockey game at North Dakota and was transferred to a Minneapolis hospital this morning where doctors are deciding if emergency surgery is required to relieve swelling of the spinal cord, the player's father said.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Well let's see, where are we: swept BG, dominated UM one night and a so-so effort in a Saturday loss, now headed into a hornets nest in Oxford, Ohio to face a likely ****ed-off Miami team that just lost 5 of 6 points to Ferris. I'll paraphrase my cohort mmf in saying that we had a chance to go for the jugular against Michigan on Saturday and instead put forth a pretty average effort that resulted in a home loss to a clustermate. However, it was nice to hear that the Carlson Center had over 4,000 in attendance for the Saturday Michigan game. Granted UM is a big-name opponent, but it's encouraging to pack that many into the Carlson for an early November game.

I have no idea what to expect this weekend at Miami. This is a team that pasted us 5-0 in Fairbanks last January (coincidentally that was really the game that turned our season around), and the Redhawks are coming off a disappointing weekend. Not much to say except show up to play and take what you can.

With NMU coming to Fairbanks on the 19th and 20th that will be a great opportunity to continue the home-ice dominance of late and keep pace in the standings. I'm very encouraged by our home record dating back to last season; dominating the home ice is key for being a top-tier seed in the CCHA. In years past when I was still a student at UAF, we never did a good job of that. It seemed like the general attitude around the CCHA was to put up with the flight and come away with at least a split. That seems to have changed, and it's about time. Kudos to Coach Ferguson and the team for making the trip that much harder.

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Looks to be a tough outing for the Nooks this weekend. Playing a conference foe in their barn who is #1 in scoring offense at 4.0 goals a game and #1 in scoring defense at 1.5 goals a game in conference play. The pre-season consensus final four Redhawks went winless last weekend at Ferris and are looking to regroup. For the Nooks, injuries are adding up, the travel is draining, the change in humidity gives everybody head colds, hotel food gives everybody the runs, and the pretty girls give everybody woodies.

The only thing going for us is that Paula picked Miami to win both games.
Therefore: Nooks sweep.

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Dating back to January, Miami has now outscored us 10-1. And this game isn't even over yet.

It seems like MU is the one CCHA team we can't figure out.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Last night's 4-0 loss to Miami was frustrating, not just because it was a loss, but because most of the game was fairly evenly played IMHO. The Nooks can skate with anyone.

Neither team dominated play or made a lot of mistakes. The difference was the play in front of the net and goaltending. The Redhawks were able to bang in a few from in front of the net and the Nooks couldn't. Not sure if it was stronger individual play by the Redhawks or just the way it goes. It wasn't like Miami had an abundance of chances and some were bound to go in. Shots were limited and fairly even at around 20.

Greenham is a solid goaltender and although last night was not his fault, he didn't exactly "make the saves you shouldn't have to" to win or even be competitive in these types of games. Greenham was average last night. The Redhawks capitalized on most their quality chances and Reichard was always in the right place at the right time. Blame the D, blame Greenham, it doesn't matter. The Nooks didn't get it done. And didn't get it done in a somewhat an embarrassing fashion.

Get'er done tonight boys.
Go Nooks!

We also can't let Miami get into our heads. They play a very physical game, and last night and in January they really took us out of our game by shoving us around. The problem with retaliating to that is the retaliator usually gets caught. And Miami is a team that seems to really like to throw their weight around once they get ahead.

So, in summation, play YOUR game (not theirs), keep it close or get ahead, and see what happens.

Thought Greenham was decent Friday, and great Sat. Good win Saturday. This team has character.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

That was a gusty win. I thought Miami controlled play more tonight than Friday night but they couldn't put the game away. Greenham made a number of good saves to keep the game in reach.

The boys really picked it up in the third and got a number of good chances on second and third efforts. They really "Meyers'd" the third period. It was nice to see someone just slap it on net and hope someone's there to clean up. It's about time they got a break.

Good job Nooks.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Great win tonight, especially in Coach Ferguson's absence. It's nice to finally 'solve" Miami. I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting more than one or two points from this weekend. I like this team's resiliency...just like last year they won't give up.

'Nooks have a chance to really gain in the standings the next two weeks. Hopefully we can put together two solid nights in a row this weekend against NMU in Fairbanks.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

The coach speak was politically correct and talked about how these two teams always play tough and it was a another typical hard fought battle etc., etc., etc... I think the Nooks gave this one away. No way should we have let NMU forge a 1-1 tie. This one will hurt. NMU played steady and maybe deserved to win. The Nooks brought their C game. Everything was sloppy and lack-luster. I was hoping the reason the Nooks were late returning to the ice during period breaks was because the Coach was not through chewing on them. But I guess that wasn't the case. Maybe I was watching a different game than a lot of other fans I overheard, but I thought that was a pretty poor showing.

Mr. Meyers must have drawn the short straw during pre-game, and was selected as the one that still had to hustle Friday night. Good effort Ron. Maybe he'll get a chance to slack off Saturday night.

I had a hard time even coming up with some action shots from Friday night's game. I can imagine how hard it must have been to come up with 3 stars of the game.

Ellingson was steady in goal for NMU...
1098052698_U77DX-L.jpg

Greenham was also steady in goal for the Nooks...
1098052458_ZWnyC-L.jpg

We had lots of chances, but couldn't finish...
1098052147_z6L3G-L.jpg

Even had a goal disallowed, which was probably the right call...
1098051195_YAXxP-L.jpg

Taranto went out early with an injury, and we missed his play in the dirty areas...
1098051494_eizaN-L.jpg

Overall, we just didn't give our best shot and did not look like we deserved to be a ranked team.
1098051811_75bd2-L.jpg

But that was last night, and tonight could and should be a totally different story. I think we have the talent to keep this from even being close. But history doesn't back that up, so we'll see.

Go Nooks!
