This team has talent. It frustrates me that they always seem to play to the exact level of their opponent.

I've noticed that too and have the same frustration. Tonight should be an interesting barometer.

Tough defense and solid goaltending. It seems like most the conference is like that. We have three teams drifting a little toward the top, two drifting a little toward the bottom, and six teams in a blender. If this keeps up the last weekend of conference play should be a barn-burner.

The CCHA seems to be better this year from top to bottom than it has the last couple of years. If you had told me in September that we would have road wins at Miami and Notre Dame but be in 8th place before last night, I would have thought you were nuts. On that note, our series against Ferris next week is going to be a big one.

Heck of a night, and weekend for the Nooks. 6 points puts us back in 5th in the CCHA. I think 6 is the most goals we've scored in a game since pasting UAA last year.

I'm back on the bandwagon.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Very good effort by the Nooks last night. All of them. Team effort. All over OSU for the first two periods. OSU had a chance to stop or reverse Nook momentum with an apparent extended 5x3, but a couple of poor decisions by OSU ended that in a hurry.

Granberg had an excellent weekend, assuming the Ron Meyers energizer bunnie role. Taranto was screening shots and drawing major attention all weekend. Kunyk, Beck, Yaremchuk were outstanding. Petovello was a leader. The D-men played great. Greenham was Greenham. Everybody played their team role to hilt.

We still have a good shot at fourth in the conference, but we need to take care of business. We can only afford to drop maybe one game in the last six. We have Ferris at home, LSSU on the road, and then back home against MSU. Ending up in fifth would suck, since although you get a first round bye, your first series is on the road against the fourth place team. We wouldn't get to host anything. If you end up in sixth through eighth, you lose the bye weekend, but at least you host a home series. Not sure which scenario is more beneficial. But, you play to win and see what happens.

We need to catch WMU, but I'm just as concerned about NMU and FSU. WMU has a couple games in hand and has BG left, but also Miami and Michigan on the road, and a home/home with ND. Tough road out.

After us, FSU has ND and OSU. We need to sweep FSU here next weekend. It's only the second back-to-back home series we have had this year, so the boys actually get a full week of practice and a chance at their regular routines. Most people don't realize that when teams come north, our own team has only returned a few days ahead of them. And we do that six or seven times a season. The Nooks should be rested and ready.

NMU also has a couple of games in hand on us and has LSSU, MSU, BG, and Mich left. They could gain some ground.

It would be great to get the fourth spot, heal up a little, and host those fifth place losers. :)

Go Nooks!

I'm wondering if Ferris State had any issues getting up to Fairbanks with the snowstorm that smacked the Great Lakes.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

For all intents and purposes, our last four series are playoff series. We need to sweep FSU, LSSU, and MSU for a solid shot at fourth place in the conference. Fourth would lock in a bye week and a home playoff series. If that works out, it is likely that we would host either WMU or NMU, two teams we played poorly against earlier in the season. I'm sure the boys would like another chance at either of those two.

Besides just being fun, sweeping UAA is an important non-conference match-up, especially if by chance we can climb back into pairwise contention.

Six conference wins in a row is a tough order. Not sure we have ever done it. But it's a reasonable expectation for this team. We seem to gaining momentum and hopefully our injury situation will continue to improve.

The home stretch starts tomorrow night. Playoff-esque hockey. Get'r done.

Go Nooks!

I think we have a very realistic chance at #4 when you look at Western Michigan's schedule this month. This weekend will probably decide who gets 5th with a shot at 4th. Until Michigan choked late in the 3rd at Miami, I even thought we had an outside chance at catching the Redhawks, but that 3 points they picked up will probably entrench them in the top 3.

The schedule is set up for another run similar to this time past year, but we need to pounce on Ferris this weekend and hope the jet lag and short turnaround plays a factor. Much like Greenham, Pat Nagle is more than capable of stealing a game for them.

As for the PWR, if we get 5 or 6 points this weekend we should set up nicely to get back into the mix. Much less than that and I think this year's season ends in the CCHA tournament. One good thing is that FSU, MSU, and (drumroll) UAA are TUC's, so W's will be extra helpful.

No easy road out, though. Ferris is always tough, LSSU is a tough road trip, MSU will be playing to send Comley out on a good note, and those pesky Seawolves look a lot better than they have over the last couple of years.

Go Nooks.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

I was thinking about this, and let's remember back two years to the 2009 Governor's Cup, which was a big black eye on an otherwise outstanding turnaround season. Somewhat similar to this year, we were hanging around in the PWR, not quite all the way in but close. Those two losses to UAA in all likelihood knocked us out of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, because as you probably recall, we knocked out Ohio State in the CCHA playoffs and then Ohio State was, I believe, the last team to squeak into the dance despite the fact that we had those two March wins over them. And if that wasn't enough salt in the wound, OSU went on to get annihialated in the first game of the regionals that year.

UAA is a solid team this year that has some good wins over good teams. They aren't shooting themselves in the foot with bad penalties like they have in past years. As if beating up on Anchorage wasn't enough motivation already, that's a series we have got to take care of business in if the postseason is in anybody's sights.

Besides just being fun, sweeping UAA is an important non-conference match-up, especially if by chance we can climb back into pairwise contention.

Brutal loss against a great goalie and a stingy D. Reminds me of us, but Ferris wanted it more.

Gut check time yet again.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Ferris deserved last night's 2-1 win. A closely fought game but the Bulldogs just wanted it more, took it to us in the corners, and won more one-on-one battles, especially when it counted. The Nooks came out somewhat flat and never really got it going. Not much more to say. Ferris is too good a team not to give it your best shot. We didn't. The Nooks lacked the same effort and intensity.

Two strong defensive teams battled all night...

Granberg was able to stop Nagle's shutout bid with this great effort with under a minute left in the game and with the extra attacker, but the Nooks couldn't complete the comeback...

MMF,

Thanks for the geat pictures; better than cable (well, not really, but better than just the radio, even though your announcers are very good).

A Nanook win tonight would help to atone for that terrible Super Bowl halftime show.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Well, this was one of those weekends where, as a fan, I start to think of the other things about our program that I'm proud of (graduation rate, GPA's, community service, etc) because it's hard not to be disgusted with what's happened on the ice.

With the outcome of this weekend, we are pretty much playing for next season at this point. I don't think we can catch Ferris or Western for the bye, so it looks like a first round home series that, if won, is rewarded with a return to Yost or Oxford. That's a long road to Detroit.

We need to bounce back this weekend on the road.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

So how many 4x4 goals have the Nooks given up in the past couple weekends? I know there's alot of ice out there in a situation like that, but c'mon... It lost the game for them against Ferris, and it lost them the game tonight against the Lakers.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

And so our CCHA regular season comes down to a scrappy Spartan squad probably looking to send Comley out on a high note. Since our PWR rating is sunk and we aren't getting a bye in the CCHA playoffs, here's to hoping we can gain some momentum to take into the Anchorage weekend and beyond.

You are who you are this time of year, and inconsistent has been what we are. We seem to play better with our backs against the wall, but I sense the last two weekends took a lot out of the gas tank from our guys. We shall see. I have faith in our coaches to keep everybody motivated.

Nice win last night. It's good to see a solid effort over all 3 periods result in a favorable outcome. Now, let's keep the pedal to the metal.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Nice outcome last night for the Nooks, earning a 4-1 win over MSU. At times we looked very good and at times we were hanging on. Totally dominated the first period, outshooting MSU 13-4, but only lead 1-0 going into the break. Deja-vu all over again. MSU controlled play in the second but couldn't capitalize. The third was evenly played except for the scoring. Nooks capitalized on goals from Taranto, and two from Enders. Enders really stepped it up with two goals and an assist on the night, and Greenham came up big a number of times. He lost his shutout bid with less than two minutes left in the game.

Photos from last night.

A very good first period for the Nooks, who were able to put lots of pressure on Yanakeff...

The Nooks fore-checked and back-checked well most the night, and their effort along the boards and in the corners was much improved...
1192304064_5d4qg-L.jpg

Carlo Finucci (from Hendersen and Enders) was able to put this one past Yanakeff about six and one-half minutes into the game...

The Nooks held on in the second, weathering a number of good scoring chances by MSU...

Both teams had their chances in the third...
1192303230_bJpqN-L.jpg

But Andy Taranto was able to bury this PP goal about seven minutes into the third, putting the Nooks up 2-0. Enders followed up with his first of the night a minute later (from Gens and Klassen), and his second of the night with six minutes left in the game (from Filzen)...

The defense didn't give up a lot of changes in the third...

And when they did, Greenham was up to the task.

Well, the GC is home for another year and a CCHA team is whining about having to make a second trip to Alaska. It must be playoff time.

Go 'Nooks. Get it done.

Should be an interesting weekend of hockey. Would like to see Comley's career end in Fairbanks, but I sure in some hollywood story they win this series and face off against Michigan as the lowest advancing seed. I hope the nooks to believe in hollywood endings.
