Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Quick, somebody call the waaaaahhhhh-mbulance for Rick Comley and MSU: http://www.wilx.com/blogs/sportsblog/Goofy_Trip_to_Alaska_117198213.html

If Comley was actually stupid enough to tell a reporter we don't belong in the CCHA, it's going to be extra special sending him home after this weekend.

That is a pathetic article. I guess nobody ever stops to consider that half of the Alaska teams games are ON THE ROAD. Whoop their hoity toity butts Nanooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

If Comley's taking time to call some no-name blogger for a local TV station to complain about road trips, we probably now know why a major college university's hockey team is so lousy that they have to play road games in the first round and why he won't have a job after this weekend in all likelihood.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

We usually have quite a few students at the games but they are fairly subdued. But if a student section were so inclined, I bet there are some very creative (i.e. clean) taunts that could be crafted for this series, and a fun time had by all. :)

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Hey, it's playoff hockey and things are said, and even mis-stated, but you know that nobody likes to make the trip. It's all good, you just get to ride the Spartans this year, and if things go well, someone else next year. But I wonder, what will happen to the Alaska teams when the BTHC kicks into gear and the WCHA and CCHA restructure? Serious question, I really don't care whether MSU plays in Alaska or Ann Arbor as this season has been tough and there is a reason that Comley is "retiring". Maybe road trips will be easier in a couple of years?

We're not really that sensitive of a bunch.
It doesn't matter who we play, we'd be looking to nic pik on something. That was just a little too easy.

I just hope that this weekend we see...
1. A big crowd.
2. A student section with good energy (like at the Governors Cup).
3. The gold jerseys (I have decided we skate faster and smarter wearing gold).
4. Everyone giving 110% all 60 minutes of each game.

Go Nooks!

Quick question then I'll let you guys get back to bashing on MSU...do you guys still have this awesome intro video or is it a new one this year? I think its the best intro in college hockey easily.

You're right it's those gold jerseys I hope coach has them wear gold this weekend, not white.

Why do you guys hate us so much? First Space Bear destroys Spartan Stadium, and then I find this:

I think it's because green is your primary color. Green is considered to be an evil color, thanks to our arch rival. :D

I would imagine we would stay in what's left of the CCHA or move to the WCHA. My own (completely unfounded) opinion is that the CCHA denied Alabama-Huntsville because they knew Penn State was imminent and they wanted to have that last spot available for Penn State to ward off the BTHC. However, it looks like the BTHC is all but a done deal at this point. If I had to pick one after BTHC happens, I'd rather go to the WCHA since I think the CCHA won't know what to do with itself without Michigan or Michigan State.

About what happens to us, UAF and UAA bring a lot of money to the table in the form of paid travel costs and NCAA exemptions (allowing other teams to schedule extra home games, potentially worth tens of thousands of dollars) that can be pretty lucrative, especially to a smaller program. I guarantee you the CCHA and WCHA schools don't make the trips to Alaska because they're being charitable with our best interests in mind...they put up with the travel because there's money on the table, and the NCAA is increasingly becoming about the money (see: Big 10 Hockey Conference).

About the travel, let's face it, unless you haven't been outside the Rust Belt or Minneapolis in your life, flying to Alaska is not that big of a deal. You get on the plane, look out the window for a while, then get off the plane. Thousands and thousands of people worldwide do it every day. Hockey teams that are on an expenses-paid trip courtesy of the host Alaska school get zero sympathy from me and every other fan up North when they complain.

Who knows what Comley said or didn't say to that goofball reporter in East Lansing, but I can tell you there wasn't any (public) complaining from OSU or WMU the last two years when they had to go to Fairbanks for the playoffs. You have to play the cards you're dealt this time of year, and I thought it was pretty poor that MSU is upset about traveling when they finished in 10th.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

I would guess that what you're hearing from the MSU folks is based on the timing of going up to your fair state so quickly after just being there. I can also tell you that they are in full understanding of finishing 10th created the situation. The players are the type to just get on the bus and go play, whether it's in Alaska or Kalamazoo.

It's all about the money, well stated.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Good win last night! Need to come out firing on all cylinders tonight. MSU will be ready. MSU has belly ached and cried about every little thing since the begging of this series, and their fans are continuing that trend on their thread. All the Nanooks goals were reviewed last night (because Comely cried about all of them), and all of them were good goals. I hope the boys close out MSU tonight. I have never cared for Comely. He is a pompous jerk. I hope we end his career tonight! GO NOOKS!

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

You are obviously entitled to your own opinion, but I have to say that Rick Comley is one of the LEAST pompous coaches I have ever met. He is a kind, down to earth guy. I also find it hard to believe that no Nanook fans would be upset had last night's situation been reversed. I understand that the OT goal was reviewed, but if the net came off the moorings before the puck went in, the whistle should have blown. We have had so many of those kinds of calls go against this year, it's disheartening. I have to believe that if MSU scored a goal like that in OT, your coach would want it reviewed as well. Neither team deserves to lose on a crap call, especially in the playoffs.

From what I understand the goalie leaned back and lifted the goal up but not off the moorings and it was back down on the ice before the puck crossed the goal line.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

From the MSU thread...
The net came off the moorings before the overtime goal was scored. Apparently, you do not have to blow the whistle when that happens anymore. Then, after Comley did his post-game interview, he was shoved around by two Nanook fans. Rob Woodward and Adam Nightingale had to break it up and escort Coach to the locker room. Classy. A loss is a loss, but it's hard to keep losing this way. I've never experienced a season with so many apologies from refs...it's about time for something good to happen to these kids.

I watched the goal and didn't notice anything at the time, so I'll have to reserve judgment until I see a replay. I hope Methodical posts a video of the goal. It's troubling that MSU was in a position to win the game. They were outplayed most of the night. But that's hockey and indicative of our scoring struggles.

Is the thing about Comley even close to being accurate? Or is this just locker-room fodder?

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2010-11 Season Thread – Global disruption...

I never saw it come off, so if it did, it apparently just lifted and came right back down, and didn't become dislodged so that it had to be put back in place. I've seen MANY times where that's been the case, and play is allowed to continue, because it's already back in position before it would have any effect on the game itself. If it needs to be put back into position, or the puck goes in when it's out of position, sure, blow the whistle. If it bounces up and back down before the puck gets anywhere close to it, then that's just pointless. And yes, I'd feel the same way regardless of which net we're talking about.

Not exactly NCAA, but I couldn't find anything specific about it in that rule book, but this is what the NHL says about displaced/lifted goal posts:

78.4 Scoring a Goal - A goal shall be scored when the puck shall have been put between the goal posts by the stick of a player of the attacking side, from in front and below the crossbar, and entirely across a red line the width of the diameter of the goal posts drawn on the ice from one goal post to the other with the goal frame in its proper position. The goal frame shall be considered in its proper position when at least a portion of the flexible peg(s) are still inside both the goal post and the hole in the ice. The flexible pegs could be bent, but as long at least a portion of the flexib;e peg(s) are still in the hole in the ice and the goal post, the goal frame shall be deemed to be in its proper position. The goal frame could be raised somewhat on one post (or both), but as long as the flexible pegs are still in contact with the holes in the ice and the goal posts, the goal frame shall not be deemed to be displaced.

Emphasis added.

As for Comley being confronted by fans, I didn't see it, but I wouldn't be too surprised if a couple of people took it too far, as the whole arena was pretty much booing him due to his tantrum on the ice. Unfortunate in any case.

I would imagine we would stay in what's left of the CCHA or move to the WCHA. .
No need to get a proposal from U-Haul , you are staying in the CCHA. Besides it would be ugly for you because if you joined the WCHA Karr would pony up travel for all the teams including UAA. He would roll over like a well trained circus bear and spit out travel vouchers like no tomorrow.

My own (completely unfounded) opinion is that the CCHA denied Alabama-Huntsville because they knew Penn State was imminent and they wanted to have that last spot available for Penn State to ward off the BTHC. This is what happens when you sit back and watch the world pass by. The WCHA will have 10 teams when the smoke clears with the BTHC.
The CCHA will be courting Alabama Huntsville and any other want a be hockey program to bolster up their gutted conference.

About what happens to us, UAF and UAA bring a lot of money to the table in the form of paid travel costs and NCAA exemptions (allowing other teams to schedule extra home games, potentially worth tens of thousands of dollars) that can be pretty lucrative, especially to a smaller program. Tens of thousands more like a hundred thousand plus if they have a full house for the weekend. UAF is still in a fog as they still give 25 paid plane tickets, or they just don’t care about their budget. UAA has negotiated their paid tickets down to 12. Maybe somebody needs to ask Forrest Karr’s boss why nothing has changed since day one.

About the travel, let's face it, unless you haven't been outside the Rust Belt or Minneapolis in your life, flying to Alaska is not that big of a deal. they all cry about the travel to Alaska but they say tuff dog do do about the Alaska schools travel schedule.
p.s. need your addy as the fresh caribou eye’s need to be eaten soon.
