2nd Term Part VIII - The Thin Red Line

It does seem like whenever civil rights are extended to a group traditionally discriminated against, the reaction is expressed on moral grounds. And yet morality has survived the extension of equal rights to Catholics, women, blacks, and even the Irish.

Morality will be just fine when gay couples are as miserable are straight couples.
What, pray tell, would you consider to be immoral?

And that's a crying shame if immorality is the norm.
"Immorality" has been the norm for centuries. Arranged marriages, incestual marriages, marriages of convenience etc. have been around for centuries. "Morality" in marriage has been long gone.

Morality in marriage depends on each cultures norms. 1000 years ago when arranged, incestual marriages were the norm all over the place, there was nothing consifered immoral about it. Looking back at it now, we seem to have a different view of marriage, so those norms seem outrageous.

Maybe you should be more worried about the 50% divorce rate and less about loving gay couples professing their love for one another if you really want to protect marriage.

Re: 2nd Term Part VIII - The Thin Red Line

The actual overall divorce rate has never been close to 50% (for example for first time marriages it is less than 25%).

That said the overall point is spot on.

So what is the "line in the sand" that cannot be crossed? It seems to me that you're advocating an anything goes attitude.

Call me a fuddy duddy but there have to be some standards.

The line in the sand is consent. Non-consensual marriage (and sex) is immoral. That covers all coercion, pedophilia (a minor is defined as being unable to consent), and John Cornyn's box turtle.

You've said it. As long as both people consent, nothing else should matter.

But is there a marriage that would be considered immoral?

Let's start with spousal abuse, adultery, absenteeism, neglect, bad parenting, etc. I'd say heteros have that on lock down, champ.
Society, courts, and legislatures.

But the position of the posters seems to be anarchy.

1. They've been weighing in for years and will continue to do so.

2. On the contrary, the position is equal opportunity to get it either right or wrong.

Wow, no one spoke up about you bringing her up rather than letting her fade into memory. Perhaps even they realize she won't willingly go away - quietly or not.

She's doubtless planning to induce more psychopaths to shoot congressmen.

But what about attitudes towards that behavior?
Abuse - Ray Rice gets 2 games and the NFL calls the punishment "appropriate". People will be cheering him come September.

Adultery - lost the stigmata years ago.

Absenteeism - see pro athletes and babies in every port.

Neglect - Not my problem. I have me to worry about.

Bad Parenting - That's what nannies are for. We're going to Cabo. Do you like our 2 comma lifestyle?

Yep - every instance you've cited is immoral behavior. But do we care anymore? Has "live and let live" led to increases in immoral behavior??
