2024 Elections: One Last Chance for Democracy

Yes…the calls for a new candidate is so incredibly fu-king stupid. As a Democrat, Biden is our guy. I don’t want anyone else. He could have peed all over himself and been airlifted to the nearest hospital, and he’s still my guy. Fu-k the media. Fu-k the noise.

I love when we agree!

And Fade you nailed feelings as well.

I have been as big a Biden cheerleader as anyone here, and have posted dozens of times (and its a message I use in real life) that Biden's presidency has been the best one of my lifetime, and it isn't even close. But only someone who spends their days doing nothing but whistling past the graveyard could see last night as anything but a problem.

I developed my opinions about Biden looking at policy, looking at the work of the people he has put into important positions, looking at the facts and metrics, and knowing about both what he was handed on January 20th 2021, as well as what the political realities are today. But in the last couple of weeks I started paying attention to what Biden looks and sounds like. It started back when he gave the speech to the gun safety groups. We have all got to come to grips that we pay attention to politics and policy very differently than the majority of Americans, and even the majority that will vote this fall.

Biden has more time to recover from this than Hillary Clinton did when she passed out from the flu or pneumonia or whatever it was and the cameras showed her literally being dragged back to a waiting van so that's a postive, but last night was not good.

Do I believe Biden to be mentally competent to be president? Yup, and I say this even after watching him last night and in the recent weeks. But perception is almost 100% reality for far too many lazy Americans. It doesn't matter how much he "recovered" after the first 15 or 20 minutes of the debate, and I think people here are claiming that recovery was a little more than I thought it was. The first 15 or 20 minutes are going to make the much greater impact. If another 10% of the population was like virtually every poster in this thread, Biden wins rather easily. That they are not gives me great pause about the literal future of the world.

No generation has left the stage of history willingly; they have had to be pushed. If we're going to make sweeping generalizations, why doesn't anyone in GenX have the chops to unseat the Boomers?

What is Gretchen Whitmer's bat signal?

I can only compare myself, with what I see from my parents and their peers. And I can tell you right now my experience mirrors exactly what I am stating. To a T.

If last night is what hands Trump the election, we were ****ed anyways. This sounds ironic, maybe moronic, but if the average swing voter has Drew’s intelligence and political knowledge, I think Biden will be fine. If they’re actually stupid, not just stupid trolls, and believe performative theater is what makes a good president, then yeah, again, Trump’s about to open up a permanent lead in the next week. I think he will open up a lead anyways as Democrats’ non-response rate goes up again in the coming days, but I think it’ll evaporate as time goes on…it’s only 6/28, after all.

The fundamental questions will be:
Are they absolutely rock solid in knowing who they will vote for?
No? Then which ads will move them more:
  • Grandpa is praising nazis
  • Grandpa sounds old
My guess is the nazis are more negatively polarizing than a grandpa who often rambles but gets the core stuff right.

The real key to telling who a person is, is who they offer up as the likely replacement. If it's not Harris, you can be pretty confident in what they're really saying.

So basically, it was a perfect outcome for the media, who can spend the next week clamoring about Sleepy Joe getting replaced at the convention.

Part of me wants to say, they've been pushing that story for awhile, they were going to find a way to use it, let them tire themselves out with it now when everyone is off on break and have it run out of steam by convention time. I, of course, base that on nothing concrete.

Biden just needs to hang on until 12:10 pm on Inauguration Day, and then I would be happy for (almost?) any younger Dem to take the reins.

I had to attend my great aunt's funeral yesterday and spent the day/evening with family, happily ignoring politics.

I'm not going to read back on the bunch of pages I missed. But I'll just say this. The swing voters - the ones that ultimately determine the winner - are not paying attention yet. The MAGA/MAGA-enablers I know would have declared victory last night if Trump dropped his pants and took a crap on the stage, and don't seem to be crowing any more than I'd have expected had Biden done brilliantly. Yes, Biden seems to have had a poor showing and that's not good at all. But the idea that it's OVER is silly.

So what to do? The Pod Save America guys, immediately after, were very very concerned but measured. It's time to have the debate of "who gives us the best chance at saving the country from MAGA. Biden? Someone else?" And yes, we should have that discussion. But remember, this isn't fantasy sports. Harris is the current Vice President and while I've been wholly unimpressed by her, if Biden steps down she is our nominee. If the party chooses someone else, what message does that send to black, female, and black female voters? We're a bunch of white folk, so think on that question carefully before answering.

Relax. Take some deep breaths. The sky isn't falling. This is far too important to make some rash decision based on one poor debate performance.
