The irony is the guy had a nuanced take and is getting reamed for it. I was ready for some knuckle-dragging Carrie Nation, but actually read what the guy said, and it's a cogent argument. I don't agree with it, and I think it's absurd to say "I'm libertarian but not on drugs" as a blanket statement, but this is a case of a media oversimplification and demonization of a reasonably crafted argument.

And this rejoinder is criminally stupid and telling:

“You could probably make that same comment about Big Macs,” Stenger tells Rolling Stone. “I don’t think that is a very informed look at the reality of the economy — whether it’s in Wisconsin or anywhere.

“Like any anything — whether it’s hamburgers or alcohol — there’s a way that it can be enjoyed responsibly,” he adds. “To deny that it’s not a part of our economy is just not looking at the facts. It is. It’s a significant piece of our economy, and I think regulators and legislators understand that.”

It reminds me of the prison industry saying if we decriminalize pot it will be bad for jerbs.

Let me guess...more whiny Tik Tokers? I can't watch because I don't have an account.

And BTW...even if the bill passed the Senate (and it likely won't) and is signed by Biden Tik Tok would not be banned outright anyways. Most likely (depending how the bill was framed in the Senate) it would just require Bytedance or another investor to buy back a certain percentage of ownership that the Chinese Government has. The US does not want a foreign nation to have that high a stake in what is becoming a public utility. Oh no perish the thought!!

Tik Tok is not getting outright banned.

Nope. A smart*ss reply to the Biden/Harris campaign post.

It starts with a snippet of Joe saying that they're not going to touch social security while Joe's in charge (from a larger video describing it). And the stitched reply is "Thanks Joe for posting this information on TikTok because I wouldn't have heard about it through other sources. I found out about it through TikTok.

[Long, long awkward pause]

Good luck in the election, Joe."

Sounds like a true loonitarian position. No "Big Alcohol" lobbying on behalf of major producers, no licensing, no inspections, no sin or sales taxes. If you drink your neighbor's hooch and get methanol poisoning, that's your business.

Sounds more like a dumbass response to me.

If TikTok didn't exist, maybe, just maybe, Biden's media team might have thought of posting that information to some other platform that the kids were using in that scenario.

Particularly since statistics show that the majority of Americans now prefer to get news and current events through our phones & tablets, and a substantial percentage of those are getting it from social media apps first.

Are a lot of Tik Tokers on Social Security?

If the only place you get your news is from SM you are doing it wrong. If Tik Tok is the only way you are part of the problem not part of the solution.

(not YOU obviously)

Anything that makes money is obviously great.
