2024 Election Thread

Yeah Omar has a bit of a different makeup and I’m not surprised she hasn’t been making as bold of statements as tlaib- wouldn’t go down as well in MN

Omar would still win...what she would lose in St. Louis Park she would offset in Minneapolis and other suburbs. She proved that last election. The difference between her and Tlaib is she learned from her mistakes and I wouldn't doubt part of that was because of Dean Phillips. (who then went on to make a dumber mistake but I digress) Tlaib is doubling down which, at least to my amateur eye, seems out of character.

The problem Tlaib is going to have, no matter her constituency, is that she is now openly attacking Biden which will end up putting her on an island. I don't hold her comments on Israel against her she has a bias just like an Israeli American would. But saying Biden supports genocide and threatening him in 2024 is not the way to make your point, especially when I guarantee Biden would go to bat for her if the Fascists went after her again. Its bad politics, and when you are already a target and seen by even some in your party as problematic (for the wrong reasons...I like her personally) you are really opening up the door to your own demise.

Now, one of the reasons she probably felt the need to do it was because he is so outwardly vocal on other issues it would seem weird if she didn't on this one. I mean she hoots and hollers over student debt forgiveness, of course she will about a violent and stupid war between terrorists groups that is killing her people. But there is a right way and a wrong way and her way is the friggin wrong way and while it may play to her constituents...well it is reckless at best and full on Antisemitic at worst. Not a good look...

Apparently if you say Palestinians are human beings you're anti-Semitic.

You sound like a freshmen at NYU...no one is saying that. Unless all the American Jews saying "Palestinians are human beings" are Antisemitic.

I know you think you are speaking from a place of intelligence but even pretending that is what is going on is Trumper level nonsense.

Yeah I don’t know who is saying that.

i do have a side eye though for some who are pro Palestine but then don’t seem to have any smoke for hamas or hezbollah.

you have terrorists kidnapping and dismembering, and then using civilians as human shields. And they did it because they knew Israel would have to react.

I’m sincerely not trying to start an argument, but I genuinely don’t know what else we expect Rashida Tlaib to do? She’s mad as hell. She’s Palestinian with family living in Israel, for goodness sake. I think it’s disgusting her state party is turning on her for speaking so fervently about her beliefs on what’s happening to her people, and potentially her family. Let her speak her piece. Bernie Sanders knocked it out of the park on CNN with Dana Bash. She was angling to get him to say something negative about Tlaib or her words, and he wasn’t having it. Love that man.

Politically, she should not be saying Biden supports genocide. Leaving aside that he definitely does not, you are alienating most of the people in your party. Politically speaking what she did was beyond stupid because it can be interpreted as her saying "anyone who supports Biden supports genocide". Rank and File Dems are not going to back her up on that for about a dozen reasons and if God forbid any of them were Jews...

She drew an unnecessary line in the sand...this after she needed many of the people she now indirectly spit in the face of to protect her from the MTG attack.

Its not about her anger at the situation or her supporting Palestine. She should support Palestine and she should make sure that her voice is heard daily on it. I thought it was great she put the Palestinian Flag up at her office that is awesome! The thing being lost in all of this is that the plight of the Palestinian goes well beyond just this situation. Egypt is blocking Palestinians from entering, even threatening war over it. The crisis is spreading and no one is helping them. Keep that in the head of everyone especially the warmongers!

But you can do that without threatening the President who happens to be the head of your party. That was the tactical mistake and someone on her staff should have reminded her of that.

no one is saying that

No one in the Cafe (who is not Ignored) is saying that. In the world, of course people are saying it, and acting like it. There are millions of Jews saying Palestinians are people, many of them in Israel, but there are also Israelis, including the government, who wrap themselves tightly in the mantle of victimhood and react to any assertion that those they are murdering are humans with sputtering accusations. Obviously, you know this.

The official doctrine of Israel says they use disproportionate force to destroy civilian infrastructure to deny it to their enemies. They are basically committing themselves proudly to war crimes. But what of Hamas? Exactly, is my answer. The Israeli government is on a moral par with Hamas.

This may be how it has to be. Two peoples with mutual hatred occupying the same patch of dirt has always ended in genocide before. Stable(ish) western countries which themselves conquered their land by murdering other populations have nothing to say about it -- 19th Century America is likewise on moral par with Hamas and the Israeli government, as is 19th century Russia and Turkey and most likely a majority of states across the globe. Genocide is, apparently, how monkeys like to negotiate.

So let's not pretend the leaders of either Gaza or Israel aren't creeps, and let's not pretend they aren't the sincere voice of millions of animals among their populations. Humans under pressure are toxic AF.

Yes to all this. It is dispiriting because the Squad is essentially the only moral conscience in the US government, so to have such a ball-busting self-own is a tragedy. If this was a tactic it was a bad read, if it was sincere she needs better discipline.

Meanwhile, who did not see this coming?

I have to imagine it also makes things awkward for Slotkin and her Senate run.

I think she didn't take a breath. She is angry, and I totally get it. She is probably a bit caught up in the "Biden Abandoned Us" stuff that her constituents are saying and didn't take a step back to let her brain catch up with her heart. She made a human mistake...though a very dumb and dangerous one.

Its why I dont hold her words about Israel against her...it is asking a lot for someone to be able to be level headed during all of this. But like a lot of people in pain she is lashing out at the wrong people.

Expel the Palestinians? Who are we Jordan? I have an extra room in my house they are welcome to stay here!

I have to respectfully disagree with both of you. This is probably going to be the one issue that's going to be forever nearest and dearest to her heart. Nothing else - not re-election, not Biden's re-election, not what her Jewish counterparts in Congress think of her - matters to her right now. I don't think she needs to stay on message. This is her greatest hour of need, her finest hour, and she feels like Biden hasn't done enough for her and her people and her family. I'm not saying this is what I think- this is what SHE thinks. If now isn't the time for her to "hoot and holler", rather than properly stay on message, I don't know what is. If her "river to the sea" comment is, in her words "an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate" as we watch Israel drop bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb on Gaza, why does no one believe her? I mean, I do. I think she wants the bombing to stop, so no more of her people die, including family. It's very, very personal to her. I'd think she's crazy for not acting this p-ssed off about everything, if she "hoots and hollers" about everything else. As a cis white male with heterosexual tendencies and a flaming atheist heart with no dog in this fight, I can see how some of Biden's words and actions could be construed as pro-Israel, anti-Palestine. No, I don't personally think he's actively supporting genocide, but I do think that Israel's incessant bombing of a population who has absolutely no way out is the bigger problem here. If Israel stops bombing and does more ground invasion stuff where they root out and kill Hamas fighters, I support that. Defend yourself. Kill Hamas fighters. Stop killing Palestinian women and children. It's like killing the abused along with the abuser. I don't give two f-cks if Egypt and Jordan and the rest of the ME are a bunch of cowardly, hypocritical pieces of sh-t when it comes to this situation. Israel is the main aggressor now, and they're lashing out on the wrong people.

I have family there too my uncle lives in the West Bank and his daughter lives near the Southern Border where the attack happened. I think I get some of what she is going through.

Well, I am glad to know they survived the Hamas attack. I am glad they aren’t stuck in Gaza, where the carpet bombing is continuing to take place. It surprises me that you’d take the stance you are on what Tlaib is saying, given what you just said.
The only thing she’s said that I can interpret as being anti-Semitic is her “River to the sea” comment, and since she’s been so forceful, blunt, and openly honest about everything else, including accusing her party leader, the leader of the free world, of genocide, I doubt she’d lie about just that one thing. If she said something else anti-Semitic, I have yet to see it. I know she’s said more than once she wants peace and weeps for not only Palestinian deaths, but Israeli ones as well.

From some people I’m following, it sounds like Virginia had higher republican turnout for early voting and they expect a higher dem vote today

Coming down to the wire in Kentucky. A few counties to watch will be Kenton (EST) and Warren (CST), the 3rd and 5th largest counties in the state, which Beshear narrowly won. Madison County (EST), population only around 20,000, but considered a bellwether, narrowly went for Beshear in 2019, so if Cameron is ahead in one or more those counties, it’s likely over. Should likely know for sure by midnight central time.

What is the race in Kentucky? Sorry I forget who some of these people are

The only one worth monitoring is the Kentucky Governor’s race between incumbent Democrat Andy Beshear and Mitch McConnell acolyte Daniel Cameron. Polls were deadlocked the past week or so. Republicans will cakewalk in the other state races.
