Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers V: Bye Felicia

The 4th amendment is as follows:

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

The "wealth tax" is an unlawful seizure of a citizens private property and as such will never fly (again from my "not a constitutional lawyer" view).

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes. Try again.

And I can definitely tell you're not a constitutional lawyer.

Let's assume Jeff Bezos never makes another dime even though Amazon stock has increased 13% this year and nearly quintupled in five years.

If Bernie Sanders' soul-crushing wealth tax becomes law, for how long will he be a billionaire?

The rest of his life. My heart weeps.

All of their assets will be tied up in trust accounts, and not directly associated to the people except as beneficiaries of the various accounts. It will be a trust accountant's dream, and banks will be tripping over themselves to help these people enjoy their new tax avoidance fee structures.

trust's can pay taxes too. sweep of a pen

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers V: Bye Felicia

It doesn't say "unlawful", it says "unreasonable".

Who's to say what's "unreasonable"? An income tax fits your definition, but they're perfectly legal to collect.

listen to roofy. as taxation is already considered "reasonable", it can't suddenly become unreasonable. and in one instance but not another?

call it a 'homeland user fee'. one pays polls to use turnpikes and bridges. now one pays user fees to fund the defense, welfare, administration of their homeland. since that homeland service supports the value, use the value of to determine payment.

homeland tariff :D (but not 20%!!! that would be usury)

Simple solution. Get caught avoiding the wealth tax and you lose it all.

So, you get caught avoiding say a million in taxes and the government then fines you and confiscates $100 million (all) of your wealth. Yeah, no doubt that will work.

Works for me. I'm tired of the crying by those who have nothing to cry about. Pay up or get out.

Well yeah, it "works" for you. Kep's remedy for everything (shooting them into the sun) probably "works" for you to. Doesn't really work in real like though now does it?

It doesn't today, but there's no reason it couldn't tomorrow. To paraphrase some j4ck4ss on here, quit whining.

No point in raising taxes if you aren't also going to close legal loopholes and properly punish people and corporations who evade them.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers V: Bye Felicia

What you could probably do is apply the same concept as a parking ticket, i.e. you either pay at the meter or you pay 10x as much via a fine.

You also need strong agreements with foreign countries and tax havens (aka Cayman Islands) to make sure people can't just park their assets there.

I'm all for a wealth tax although I fear Bernie is trying to get into a dick measuring contest with Lizzy Warren since her plan came first and is better thought out. I couldn't tell you what the correct rate is but I'd be willing to settle for a smaller rate than maybe Sanders and his acolytes in order to get the whole concept off the ground and enshrined in law. THEN we can stick to the uber rich over time with gradual increases. ;)

You hide your money in a tax haven and we catch you. 20 years hard time.
