Warren might want to re-think the structure of her "wealth tax thing"...

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/23/eli...may-include-a-1-million-marriage-penalty.html

The most accurate thing about that article is the statement, quoting numerous economists, that "avoidance strategies by the wealthy would dramatically reduce the projected revenue from any wealth tax."

No kidding. Isn't that basically how the wealthy avoid paying substantial taxes now?

But, at least the politicians will get to pat themselves on the back over the good things they accomplished.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers V: Bye Felicia

If this gets it down to a single strategy (divorce), oh well... :)
Think of all the unemployed accountants :D

All of their assets will be tied up in trust accounts, and not directly associated to the people except as beneficiaries of the various accounts. It will be a trust accountant's dream, and banks will be tripping over themselves to help these people enjoy their new tax avoidance fee structures.

Simple solution. Get caught avoiding the wealth tax and you lose it all.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers V: Bye Felicia

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but Tulsi has qualified for the next debate.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers V: Bye Felicia

Of course there is that whole pesky 4th amendment thing so the whole "wealth tax" idea would likely never fly anyway.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers V: Bye Felicia

I take it you have never heard of property tax.

While I am not a constitutional lawyer, property taxes are a state and local issue (at least I have not heard of a federal property tax), thus probably protected by the 10th amendment.

There is no 4th Amendment.

There is the 1st Amendment which is the Freedom of Christianity and the 2nd Amendment which is the Freedom for any moron to own a thermonuclear device and the 13th Amendment, which allows slavery (as long as you arrest them first).

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers V: Bye Felicia

What 4th Amendment thing?

The 4th amendment is as follows:

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

The "wealth tax" is an unlawful seizure of a citizens private property and as such will never fly (again from my "not a constitutional lawyer" view).

This is like something a Sovereign Citizen would say.

It doesn't say "unlawful", it says "unreasonable".

Who's to say what's "unreasonable"? An income tax fits your definition, but they're perfectly legal to collect.
