2016 NCAA Tournament Thread

It is also noteworthy, that the conferences are under NO obligation to award their AQ to the conference Championship winner.

I would, personally, like to see one of two scenarios play out. Either:
A) eliminate the conference tourneys and award the league championship to the team with the best conf. record, OR
B) play the conf. season, and then seed the teams, based on record, for the conference tourney.
Either way, STOP awarding "Regular Season" championships. They are completely meaningless, and stupid.

No one really "awards" regular season championships officially. It's more of a PR/coach/team thing than an official "championship". Do teams get trophies for regular season titles in college? Banners, yes...but you can print almost anything you want on your own banners that you want to promote/commemorate.

I watched Minnesota clinch their "5th straight regular season conference championship" Saturday night. The commentators mentioned it at least 15 times during the game. At the final buzzer, the kids celebrated. Does the Big 10 have a tourney?*

*the answer is yes

I also know that most college basketball conferences name a "regular season champion" as well.

Is there a trophy? No trophy, no title.

Listen, I'm with you. As stated, I want them to go away. But your post reads as your opinion more than fact. If I'm watching a game, and it's being publicly discussed and then celebrated, it's a thing - whether we think so or not.

What about division champions? There's no trophy for winning the SEC East, is that a championship? Legitimately asking your opinion.

Re: 2016 NCAA Tournament Thread

Just looking back at the last 18-20 or so MASCAC/ECAC NE games, only a handful have been blowouts. They've played in more 2 goal (or less) games then they have 5 or more goal games. While they may not be putting out National Champion contenders, Norwich and Trinity found out last year how "easy" the MASCAC and ECACNE teams are.

Having said that, and after watching/listening to a lot of the ESPN money makers, I found it funny listening to them cry about how the Horizon league gets a bid and this or that team is left out yadda yadda. Can you imagine if they had the same ratio of at-large bids to pool c bids like DIII hockey has? We have 7 Auto bids, they have 32. We have 4 Non-Pool A Bids, that would leave them with about 18 Non-Pool A bids. 18 instead of 36....heads would roll. And then they are complaining how the committee changes it's mind on criteria like they do their underwear....yet it was pretty black and white in DIII hockey.

I think if we added another 3-4 Pool C bids (making it the 16 team format that DI hockey gets to enjoy), those 2 Pool A bids would really take less of a hit. I understand the whole DIII ratio blah blah blah, but IMO hockey is way too regionalized and "special". Not all schools can afford hockey, not all schools can hold hockey, not all schools are in a hockey hot bed. This isn't baseball where its played nation wide on a large scale. Football, same. Soccer, same. Wrestling, same.

Also in the same breath, while I enjoy the extra Pool C bids it causes, there are just too many non-competitive teams which would cause/does cause a headache when it comes to an opponents schedule. It's bad enough when Plattsburgh's Tournament chances were slammed shut in part to other teams schedules. I like the criteria approach (until things changed schedule wise), but needs some additional criteria and tweaking. But hey, we're just fans, we don't make the rules. I do find it funny tho that in last years (?) NCAA Meeting they voted against allowing DII schools to count towards criteria (SOS, Win % ect). A vote of yes probably saw Plattsburgh playing last week. As unique as we are in the hockey world, the suit and ties just don't care. Until a large group of other suit and ties challenge the NCAA (haha ya right), things will never change.

Re: 2016 NCAA Tournament Thread

There are, I believe, 351 D1 basketball teams. With the 6.7:1 ratio for playoffs, that would be a 52-team field, or 20 at-large bids.

And, of course, fewer D1 tournament games would mean less money for everything else in the NCAA world... a bit of apples to oranges in that regard

Yes, you're correct. I was trying to explain the whole ratio of Autobids to Non-Autobids (not dealing with total amount of teams). For every 7 autobids, they would get 4 Pool bids. Yes, I am very aware that's not how we do things, just trying to make a point that if round ball had to deal with so few Pool C bids compared to Pool A bids, heads would roll.

And you're right...less games would for sure mean that...because we know their 6 and 7 figure salaries wouldn't be affected.

Re: 2016 NCAA Tournament Thread

I missed it but let me guess...Green wants the best 64 and Golic wants to retain the AQ.

To be honest, I don't remember the exacts right now. But it's since been a hot topic across the whole station, more so then most years. I still believe if you drop the automatic bid from basketball or hockey for that matter, several schools will drop sports. I would had ZERO idea who Florida Gulf Coast was, VCU, Butler, Gonzaga, Wichita State ect ect if it wasn't for the AutoBid, and was probably the case for most everyone outside of those teams leagues.

I say again, would the teams of the MASCAC and ECACNE support a hockey program if they had ZERO chance to even make the dance? Even if Salve and Salem got pounded this year, at least we are talking about their schools in March.

While we might get the best (or better) 11 teams without the AQ bid, the cons outweigh the pro's IMO. It's finding a happy medium. As I said, if we were truly trying to find the "best" team, not only would we all play each other a few times in a season, we'd have to play a 7 game series playoff format.

Until then, tweak the criteria and keep it black and white. Keep improving teams/leagues and hopefully MOST of the BEST teams make it in.

Re: 2016 NCAA Tournament Thread

Counting this year? Oh wait they gotta play Adrian.....

...and to me Hobart would be the first ECAC West team to win one. Cheating doesn't count. If it doesn't count for '87, it doesn't count for '09.

(Edit: RIT doesn't count just because it's RIT also)

FGCU was the big story down here and in the tourney in 2013:

" The Eagles men's basketball team is best known for their run in the 2013 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, their first since moving up to Division I. In the Round of 64, the Eagles defeated the #2 seed Georgetown 78–68. It was only the seventh time that a 15th seed has defeated a 2nd seed, and the second-highest margin of victory for one.[5] Two days later in the Round of 32, the Eagles defeated the #7 seed San Diego State 81–71, becoming the first time a 15th seed has ever advanced to the Sweet 16.[6] The school was referred to as "Dunk City" or "Florida Dunk Coast" on many media outlets such as ESPN and CBS due to their high-flying athletic finishing style..."

This can happen every year and every sport as long they let everyone play...

It wasn't that many years ago,Vermont beat Syracuse in the round of 64 ! That was a 15 vs 2 as well if I remember correctly.

Re: 2016 NCAA Tournament Thread

And now this stupid conversation, for stupid people, has spread to hockey. It's not a participation trophy, donkey. Teams improve through recruiting, recruits are attracted to NCAA tournament berths. If a team can consistently win one of these "lesser" leagues, they will consistently appear in the tourney, and they will eventually close the gap a bit (see Curry College football in the mid-2000s). Your model keeps these programs stagnant. If you care about d3 college hockey, you want the competition to improve. As it is, in the broad view, many people don't respect it like other sports due to the low number of total teams competing.

Bawlzee to claim a legitimate chance to "win it all" if you can't win your league. Obviously, it happens from time to time, and that's what at-large bids are for. That said, tough to cry about missing your run to the national title while being knocked out of your own tourney.

Gotta love how you made elbo's point for him, "donkey"... If the AQ's truly improve recruiting, why do certain conferences remain weak-sisters regardless of having them year after year?
