2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Best of luck to the two best teams in the world tomorrow.

I call Coyne with the GWG:D!

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I've coped a number of posts on pro women's hockey into the other thread. I'll continue the discussion of that subject there. Back to the Olympics here.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Quite the comeback by the Swiss so far in the 3rd period of the Bronze game.

Very nice to see that NBC is showing the Gold Medal game live on the big network, not throwing it off to cable.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I think the author made some good points and observations, whether you agree with it or not. Clearly food for thought. His premise is to invest more here, and bring more European players over here. As I posted before, I think the approach should be to invest more over there, and do the development and infusion of talent over there.

Side note: Interesting to learn the Schelling works in the IT department of the IIHF. There is also a form of a message in that. Give top college grads a job in Europe that can be easily tied in with a semi-pro hockey career on the side. I bet that a lot of NA players just graduating would go for opportunities like that.

I guess I'm confused because the way I read it, if you think the money should be invested in Europe, you disagree with pretty much the entire premise of the article (as do I, which is why I find it so abhorrent). He fully puts the solution on the US and Canada and never mentions that any other country has any responsibility for developing their own players or improving their own programs. He also doesn't seem to understand that US universities are already recruiting top European talent.

I don't think he makes good points - I think he sounds like someone who doesn't actually know a lot about the system or the situation but decided to write an article anyway.

Swiss hang on to top Sweden 4-3 for the Bronze.

Read my post again. Never said I agreed with his solution, just stated that he made some good points.

Wow!

Phoebe Staenz in the third period for Switzerland...she was everywhere...setting the sheet on fire!

Looks like that skating clinic paid off.

Wow!

And Muller should get ready to field several D1 scholarship offers.

With some luck and a few words of encouragement from Stalder she may end up at UMD.

Again, what a tremendously exciting Bronze Medal Game 3rd period! Gotta be good for the game.

Note: you have to have an account with an authorized cable provider

We have CBC. Big screen set up in the cafeteria down stairs at work. :) :) :)

It is also carried live on the local radio sports station.

Can't wait to see it when I get home! I shan't return to the forum after 11:45 today though. I want to go home tonight and watch it as if it's live. No spoilers!

GO USA!

That means you will have to put earplugs in and not talk to anybody for 10 hours. Can you manage that ?.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Interview this morning by NBC with 3 of the USA players as a preview to today's gold medal game with Canada. One of the players was Julie Chu. I've been seeing her face all over commercials, etc (Bounty, BP). Turns out she has a total 30.13 mins in 3 games with a single point (vs Swiss 9-0 rout.) She appears to be a bit player at best, buried on the 4th line. She only logged 6.38 mins vs Canada on 11 shifts, second least on the team. As a casual fan, I am surprised she has such a prominent media profile. Not a hater, just took me aback when I went to check out her stats expecting more. Is she hurt or just a has-been in her 4th Olympics taking up space on the bench?

Well, I'd have to say that the smart money is on the US. It's just that the smart money doesn't always win.

I would never count Canada out.

I can't help thinking that the fear of losing, as opposed to the carrot at the end of the stick of winning, might be a/the big determining factor in this game and how recent results against each other (the negative ones) might creep into their minds and affect their play as much as they mentally try to suppress such influences.

The US isn't Canada, so the average office isn't abuzz with talk of women's hockey.

Yes, she's the #10 forward on the team on regular shifts, but she also plays a major role on penalty kills. She also has two more Olympic appearances than anyone else on the team.

Canada's #10 and #11 forwards Apps and Wakefield were noticeable in the last U.S. game as well. I don't think it makes sense to call these players bench-warmers and has-beens. They serve a role, and you need the right players for this role.
