2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Interview this morning by NBC with 3 of the USA players as a preview to today's gold medal game with Canada. One of the players was Julie Chu. I've been seeing her face all over commercials, etc (Bounty, BP). Turns out she has a total 30.13 mins in 3 games with a single point (vs Swiss 9-0 rout.) She appears to be a bit player at best, buried on the 4th line. She only logged 6.38 mins vs Canada on 11 shifts, second least on the team. As a casual fan, I am surprised she has such a prominent media profile. Not a hater, just took me aback when I went to check out her stats expecting more. Is she hurt or just a has-been in her 4th Olympics taking up space on the bench?

Chu is a former captain, a team leader, and a player who knows her role on the current team and embraces it. Watch the game against Sweden, when she logged a significant amount of her minutes on the PK, blocking shots and making some key clears. Taking up space, but on the ice. Her 4 Olympic games make her a go to person on a very young team when it comes to what to expect, dealing with pressure, and any other host of situations. I wouldn't expect you to know this as a casual observer, but even if she doesn't see a shift today, she is earning her medal.

Julie Chu is in her third or fourth Olympics. She's been on the team since, I believe, the year before she went to college (Harvard). She is a former captain of the team (Captain in 2010); great athlete and great ambassador of the sport. This is one of those deals where over the years she has earned the right to be the spokesperson of the team and the face of the team. Remember that the coach, Katy Stone, said she's picking the team that can win, not necessarily the 20 best players. That means accepting roles and Chu is now one of those players. She plays a lot of shorthand, and I am sure, is a presence and leader in the locker room.

That means you will have to put earplugs in and not talk to anybody for 10 hours. Can you manage that ?.

ARM hit it on the head with his reply. While my coworkers know about the game today thanks to a lot of pregame hype by NBC and affiliates, very few, if any would actually make a point to watch it, let alone record it. And I did send a company wide email out saying mum's the word if they hear the results on the radio during the day. I should be safe!

The US isn't Canada, so the average office isn't abuzz with talk of women's hockey.

Our office is in Plattsburgh, NY...so it is the talk of the office....and we are watching the game!!

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Entertaining period. I'm going to get an ulcer.

Going to a sports bar for the third period but "not secretly watching the game on my phone at my desk" until then.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Interesting to see a huge flat screen at the Canadian Embassy in D.C. and the crowd gathered 'round.

Campbell's mentioning after Spooner's wrist shot on Vetter to watch for Canada to shoot a lot of pucks to Vetter's glove side since they believe that this is one of her weaknesses was a surprise...I didn't know that she had any weaknesses!

And Mark Lee (play by play guy on the Canadian broadcast) referring to them as "the Fighting Lamoureuxs" was good for a laugh.

Canada has to stay out the penalty box. Good first period.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

How about that has-been Julie Chu, taking up space on the bench... or is she taking up space IN FRONT OF THE NET TO SET THE SCREEN FOR THE FIRST USA GOAL!

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Mikkelson playing with a broken hand!

Canada's power play has looked feeble so far.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

The US speed became an obvious factor in the 3rd period and allowed them to continually take away time and space from Canada.

Another canoe tipper.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

To borrow from Nord the Barbarian...

Win Gold...Then coaching, selection of players, etc I don't care. Don't win the Gold....Then I care

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Not gonna lie...That was a major choke job by the US. But credit goes to Canada for taking advantage of that and winning Gold.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

What a game!!! Hats off to Vetter, you gave them a chance to win! Julie Chu, thanks for teaching us class, you are 1st class! USA USA, next time!!!

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

That was a major choke job by the US.

I don't agree with that and here's why. It's THEIR game. Just like basketball was ours (except for 1972 when we got screwed by the refs against the Soviet Union). When we sent our best players, we NEVER lost. It was our game. It's hard to explain...the US didn't blow the game. The Canadians RAISED their game because of national pride. They ALWAYS do this. They did it in the 1972 Canada-Russia series when Henderson scored with like a minute left in the final game. They win games like this all the time. The men did it at the last Olympics (and the men will beat the US tomorrow, too). And just think of this. Canada DID NOT SCORE A GOAL even strength the entire game. They scored with the goalie pulled twice and then on a power play in OT.

But that aside, that was one of the BEST HOCKEY games (men, women or anything else) I have ever seen. I just feel bad for the US Women, because they will take this one to their graves.
