2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Excellent Russia vs Switzerland game this morning. Highly recommended.

Tremendous to see such high level parity between two teams apart from Canada and the US.

Also noticed Schelling was not wearing a neck guard (seems real dumb to me, especially in light of the fact that she was not wearing a throat guard either) and neither were most of the skaters, as far as I could tell, although I noticed one Swiss player wearing one. Not having noticed this before I'm rather surprised that it is not mandatory in the Olympics especially since it is in NCAA play and since many of these players are present or former NCAA players you would think that it would be an automatic for them.

On the subject of Noora, this is a very interesting read: http://www.startribune.com/sports/245630731.html

Thanks, I agree.

Kind of confirms (at least to me) a comment that I made a while back about the stories behind the stories often being as fascinating, and sometimes more so, as the ones that are wrapped up in a bow and standing center stage before us...while at the same time adding value and depth to our appreciation of the final product that we are viewing.

Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious here -- but it would be really interesting to see what Noora Räty could do against men. Give her a shot in an exhibition game or something.

The talent level of the sport has grown by probably about 7 or 8 magnitudes since the days of Manon Rhéaume.

I love Raty. Almost as much as Bauer. And just a little more than Agosta.

That's nothing new around here at least in the no whistle scrimmages that I've mentioned before that are run by a guy that I know who is a big fan of the women`s game. He's had the better female goaltender's in the area (before and while they played D1) out week after week when they were available over the last 6 or 7 years to face WHL and ECAC junior players as well as some NHL players, and younger AAA players. Until you actually see it for yourself you might not believe how well they can do.

As a matter of fact, with respect to one particular female goaltender, before and while she played D1, he has told me countless times that after the scrimmages many of the better male players from the NHL and down used to approach him and prod him to make sure that he got her out the following week because, in their words, she was more of a challenge to them than the male goaltenders! He still talks about this...saying not only was she an elite goaltender, she was fearless. (He often told me about a local CIS female goaltender that he could never get out because she was afraid to stand in goal against the men...so I guess the moral here is that if fear is present it ain't gonna happen).

And I always found this interesting...I recall his also telling me many times that they were serious about this constant request and that the proof was in the pudding, meaning that when she faced them they never held back on their shots...they gave it everything they had thereby showing their respect for her abilities whereas with some less experienced/capable goaltenders, both male and female, they would hold back.

I've seen this goaltender stone some of these big boys to the point where they were so upset that she had robbed them that they skated up to her and vehemently cussed her out! It was both hilarious and very interesting to watch, a new twist on what you had been accustomed to...kind of a glimpse into what might be.

So, yeah, it can work depending on the level of play that you had in mind and as I mentioned you might be surprised at how well they can do if you've never seen it for yourself.

(As an aside, I called him earlier today to tell him to watch the Russia-Switzerland game because it was such a tremendous game. In that conversation I told him that Botterill was singing Phoebe Staenz's praises during the game mentioning that in the pre-game warm up she was on fire and looked like she was on a mission. She's a player that we both have an interest in because of a story he told me a couple of years ago.

He was waiting for the ice to be cleaned at one of our local rinks so he could hold one of his scrimmages. The facility had two rinks so to kill some time he wandered over to the other rink to check out the action. There was a skating clinic being held and there was a female that he was immediately impressed with. During one drill that involved two players skating out of the corner together she was usually way ahead of her "partner". He knew one of the higher end male players in the clinic who had been paired up with her on some of the drills who admitted to him later that it was all he could do to keep up with her. Afterwards, with his ice ready, tying his skates up in the dressing room with the door opened he noticed her walking by and called out to her "hey, what's your name?" She stopped and quietly and shyly responded "my name is Phoebe Staenz". He then discovered that both she and her brother had come over from Switzerland to the middle of Canada to attend this skating clinic!!!!

How's that for commitment...theirs and that of their parents or whoever was funding the excursion?

Just another story behind the story.)

Just watched the Swe-Fin game. Nicole Hirtrich, the German ref, is certainly making a name for herself. She should get an interference penalty...two years for interfering with the results of a game. Kind of surprised that she got the nod for another game after the previous controversy.

In the third period Ostberg for Sweden had great form off the high platform for a very successful dive which cost Finland a goal.

With a few minutes left in the second period Cassie Campbell started commenting on the officiating, and not favourably. Once again, good for her for speaking her mind and rendering an informed decision.

Too bad for Team Finland but at the same time they were their worst enemy during this game...some serious defensive breakdowns...their play was nowhere near the level that it was at in their games vs Canada and the US. I heard Campbell mention earlier today that they were looking past Sweden...maybe so.

Nice aside Blackbeard....Saw Ms Staenz play live a few weeks ago. Great player.

I'd love to see Knight and Raty get some ice time in the NHL minors.

Maybe, but I think any skater, no matter how good would not survive long in the minors. Look at Wick a few years ago.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Forgot to mention, addressing one of Raty's points, the guy who runs the scrimmages told me yesterday, as he has many times in the past, that lots of his skaters play in the minor "pro" leagues and get paid $250-500/week (try getting by on that) and as a result when they return home in the summer they have to get a job to attempt to make ends meet. So, I guess there's getting paid and getting paid. Their situation is not far removed from what the CWHL players' experience is, as Raty alluded to.

Stated this before. The reality is that Women's hockey is the same for the athletes as all but a few other sports in the Olympics. A few stars can make a decent living of sponsorship for a limited time window. Some others get into coaching and stay with the game in that capacity. The die hards will continue in their chosen sport as a hobby while living in or near poverty and putting their careers secondary or on hold. Most however end up retiring to move on with their careers after college.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

So that went well. Shots were 70-9 America.

Honestly, after watching the game, all I could think about was the Olympic committee looking at this and wondering if women's hockey should be an Olympic sport. Really, what's the point when you have scrimmages like this? In the semis no less. Not trying to take anything away from the US squad but this game was a joke. Upsets can happen like '06 but there just doesn't seem to be continued growth that would justify women's hockey as an Olympic event.

I watched the Swedish team live a few times last year at worlds. Based on what I saw a year ago, really surprised they made it to the Semi's this time around. Last year they ended up in the 7 vs 8 relegation games. Based on these games, the difference between the US and Canada and the rest of the world has not really closed much if anything in the last four years. Don't think this is due to a lack of effort. I think it is a testament to the fact that the US and Canada keep improving as well.

I think we should do some exporting off NA trained talent with connections to a native country overseas to further the game. Lots of college girls would love to play a few years overseas after their NCAA careers are over. Why not set up club teams over there, stocked with players who have parents or grandparents with connections to the home country. Employ the players and taylor it to the ability to play hockey at a high level. Have them also coach younger talent on the side. It would infuse a higher level of hockey and may attract more locals. Just my thoughts. Year around infusion is better than the odd hockey summit events. JMO.
