2014-2015 University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Womens Hockey

Re: 2014-2015 University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Womens Hockey

UMD 2 - BSU 1 final.

Somewhat uninspiring game but better result than yesterday.

Mowat is a talented goaltender...was impressed with her last year...very fluid and good technicals, at least from what I could see with the far less that NU quality feed...it's actually poor. The scores both yesterday and today would have been quite different without her. She keeps BSU in the game.

BSU can kill you with defense, which is good for them because they can't score. A very frustrating team to play but you have to give the coach a lot of credit for instilling this style and to the Beavers for sticking to it & doing so well. I'd love to send them on an East Coast excursion, I bet a lot of those teams would be left in tears.

Good to see that it looked like Stalder was ok after writhing on the ice for some time after colliding with Hickel behind the MSU goal late in the 2nd period. Looked like it was her shoulder.

OT at the Amsoil. UND 2 - UMD 2 after regulation.

Appears as though dynastic aspirations are fleeting.

It's now shootout time.

Re: 2014-2015 University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Womens Hockey

Scoreless after one in Wisconsin. SOG UMD 4 - UW 10.

It took the 'Dogs a while to get going but they had some good sustained pressure in the last few minutes of the period. Never seems to be a man in front creating havoc when they have the puck in the offensive zone, though. They need a Glenn Anderson.

LaBahn looks like the size of a Canadian football field.

Decent video quality but no time clock or score on the screen and aggravating audio problems...continually cutting out and a rapid clicking sound every 15 seconds or so. Oh well, the parking was free.

Still scoreless after two in Wisconsin. SOG UMD 13 - UW 24.

The SOG make it look like the play is lopsided but it is anything but. The game is pretty even except in the offensive zones. UW maintains their speed and puck control better in the offensive zone creating time and space giving them the opportunity to shoot whereas UMD breaks out well and passes well through the neutral zone but they cross the blue line and appear to be lost...support often seems to disappear.

That being said, the 'Dogs had some great opportunities in the 2nd but couldn't capitalize.

Scoreless after regulation in Madison. SOG UMD 22 - UW 35.

UMD with better opportunities but UW with more of them.

Re: 2014-2015 University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Womens Hockey

Scoreless after OT in Madison. SOG 41 -23 for UW.

Re: 2014-2015 University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Womens Hockey

UW 2-1 in the shootout after 4 shooters each.

Mrazova just undressed Desbiens for the UMD shootout goal but the other three were absolutely anemic efforts by UMD.

Pankowski and McKibben for UW.

Great game but very disappointing final effort by 3 'Dogs.

McParland would in no way ever be my choice in a shootout especially in that situation. They should have stuck with sending Huertas out again like it looked they were going to do.

Having a player go twice isn't an option in the college game like it is in international hockey.

I thought the new rule this year in shootouts was that after the third shooter, if it's tied, you can send out repeat players in any order you want. I've heard multiple announcers for multiple schools make that claim.

I agree on both counts but Huertes' first effort was weak. McParland was dangerous in her freshman year but as I noted, I think earlier this season, she seems to leak oil very quickly in the first half of a game, if not in the first period, and loses her competitive edge, meaning her speed and from that point onward she looks like she is dragging a two ton anchor behind her.

Huertes has the best wrist shot on the team as far as I'm concerned but was she not turned away by the ref? I'm not sure of the rules in that situation. Can a player shoot more than once in a shootout or not? It would appear not.

I had thought the new rule this year was that shooters can repeat after the third shooter. I know they changed it so that coaches don't have to submit the shooting order ahead of time but I thought with that change they also allowed repeat shooters

Forgot to mention...decent play by play during the game. And unless I misunderstood, since I didn't quite catch the first part of his comment, the play by play guy rattled off some stats that I had never heard before. He said something to the effect that UMD has the highest scoring (I think that's what he said) senior class in either the WCHA or the country...I can't recall which. He then said that UW's senior class was second behind UMD. If that is what he said I thought it was a very interesting stat regardless of who held what position with respect to it...an interesting way to view a team's progress. Of course, one could do the same for every class on every team. I guess with computerization being what it is nowadays it's just a matter of resorting the desired field in a database. Probably just a couple of clicks of a mouse.

Did you catch that comment?
