Re: 2014-2015 Division I Scores & Results Thread

A new career-high. Her old high was 58, set in her last game before tonight (11/15 vs QU).

Add it up and she has 117 saves in her last two games, neither of which went into OT.

Imagine what GA would be for that team if she was a mere mortal?

Testament to Lundberg, who has been a really good goalie since her days with Assabet and the Wizards....averaging 36 saves a game this season .... unbelievable.

Indictment on Union, who continue to be just bad.

I don't know what they'll do next year after she graduates. Lundberg has easily been the team's MVP -- not even close, really. I've heard good things about Union's only other goalie, freshman Alexx Ridding. But she hasn't played at all so far, so she remains an unknown.

I would like to know why Alexx Ridding hasn't played yet this year. She comes in with good statistics, from a bottom 10 team in the PWHL to reach top 10 goalie statistics, the only other one, other than Tiley to do so last year. Union is not going to win any championships this year, so with a graduating goalie, why aren't you giving the next generation a chance to play?

It's a fair question. With the workload Lundberg has had (in terms of minutes and shots her way), I'm a little surprised we haven't seen Ridding at least once. I'm guessing we will at some point, especially if Union should get eliminated from the ECAC playoff picture later in the season.

Because she just beat Northeastern. If I'm coach, I'm not giving up on season right now. ECAC playoffs within reach unbelievably.

The Union coach is fighting to keep her job (as she is every year it seems). Worrying about getting experience for next year's goalie is likely the LAST thing on her mind. She needs wins NOW. So she stays with the kid who can win 50-60 shot against games single-handedly. It's not rocket science - it's self-preservation.

I'm not sure how many people discussing the Union-Northeastern game watched it, but IMO, Lundberg didn't win that game by herself. She was terrific, no doubt. But I've seen games where a goalie was getting little if any help, and last night wasn't one of those. The Dutchwomen did a good job of keeping most of the shots to the outside, clearing rebounds, and getting the puck out of the zone when needed. There were rushes every so often where they were dangerous, so it wasn't like NU could forget about defending altogether. The Huskies were on the PP a lot in the opening 10 minutes, and they definitely applied a lot of pressure then. They also were buzzing in the closing minutes. But it looked to me like rather than being under siege, Lundberg was having fun. I would think that a game like that is what a goalie on a team like Union lives for.

Watched 2nd & 3rd period. You are spot on. I don't recall any "OMG" type saves. (My goalie friends would say that means she was in great position.) I thought Union executed a game plan and played a disciplined game (1 man forecheck/trap; control the box on D). They clogged the middle and forced shots from the outside. They did their best to clear rebounds. They had bodies on NU players near the net forcing quick shots and not allowing great rebound chances. Of course, NU did have some decent chances and Lundberg was up to the task. NU was frustrated and played right into the Union game plan. Far too frequently, NU skaters opted to skate the puck up the ice instead of head-maning the puck and getting into an offensive flow and setting up. This resulted in low percentage shots and no one positioned for rebounds. Similar to a power play, you don't skate the puck up and take a 1 and done shot form the outside. You set it up. Union was the better "team" yesterday.

As for the coach, I thought her team (with less talent - maybe far less) played a disciplined game and executed it with enthusiasm. They out-coached NU. (Edit - yes, you needed a flawless performance by your goalie).

Sure, you and ARM are right. She was barely a factor because the team played so well in front of her and she only had to stop 59 low probability shots..... REALLY? Basically, what you're saying is that is was the easiest 59 save shutout you've ever seen - is that a thing? SO WHAT - she still stopped 59 shots. Come on, the story of any 59 save shutout is the goalie, not the expert defensive scheme of the team in front of her.

Like I said, you needed a flawless performance by the goalie, but it wasn't the whole story. That was my point.

UW 1- UND 0 after one period.

SOG 14-2 Wisco

Audio on the video feed is simply ambient noise from the arena.

Re: 2014-2015 Division I Scores & Results Thread

Penn State downs Robert Morris 5-0. Celine Whitlinger gets her second consecutive shutout, with 42 saves.

RMU outshot PSU 42-21. Penn State showing lots of improvement in the W-L column this year. I would expect them to steadily improve over the next few years; new facilities and the University draw should make PSU attractive to recruits. On the other hand...what is going Robert Morris this year?!

I agree, I think they already have some decent recruits in the pipeline, don't they? They got beat by Minnesota 8-0 first game of the year, but even then I thought they were going to win some games. I thought they skated pretty well, weren't intimidated, and tried hard the whole game.

Re: 2014-2015 Division I Scores & Results Thread

UW 1- UND 0 after two periods

UND played better that period.

although by the end of the period SOG were 28-8

So...my BTN Plus subscription doesn't cover this UW BTN Plus webcast I guess.
