Re: 2014-2015 Division I Scores & Results Thread

Watched the BU - BC game online tonight. Would really like to know what Ref Bill Doinon saw that led him to call off the goal.
Well, it's difficult to hear on the video, but the whistle blew well before the puck went in. It was clear as day. So they didn't so much wave off the goal as blow it dead before the puck even went in.

Here is a GIF of the whole sequence. It is a very big GIF so let it load all the way and it will stop being jittery. Tutino had been up in Burt's grill for pretty much the whole power play. The ref finally got sick of it and blew it dead and sent Tutino to the box.

But the play was most definitely blown dead well before the puck went in.

That kid was jawing all night. Nice to see ref call that play. What was Guay watching down low that she didnt call it? Too big a crowd and too big a call for her to handle. Refs need to grow some thick skin and not worry about upsetting home crowds.

I don't think the whistle even matters in the case of the offensive player getting a penalty. Once the official determines that an infraction has occurred, the play is dead even before the whistle blows. It shouldn't matter how long it is going on. If she is in the goalie's space for too long, that is usually just a whistle and the play moves outside the blue line. To get goaltender interference means she must have done something more blatant.

I can't stand Tutino. She fits right into that BU mold. Someone had to fill the void left by Melissa Anderson.

Oh I know that -- really I'm just glad the whistle blew first because it makes it crystal clear that the ref intended to blow the whistle before he knew the goal was going to be scored. Had it blown afterward it would have been conspiracy theory central.

I'm surprised that the referees did not give Burt an unsportsman like conduct for going over to Tutino and jawing with her afterwards. Or worse yet get an imbellishment penalty for going down when Tutino pushed her like she had been shot. Then again, nothing surprises me when it comes to officials.

I agree. I actually didn't see anything in that particular clip from Tutino that looked like it warranted a penalty. I don't even think she entered the crease except for maybe a split second after being pushed into it by a BC player. Certainly, she was getting in front of Burt and making it difficult for her to see the puck.

After Burt got in Tutino's face, it was a another BU player that pushed Burt.

The clip makes it look like Tutino took a whack at Burt's helmet right before the puck went in, but it's hard to tell.

I think it is interesting that the ref down at the goal didn't call anything; it was the farther away ref who comes in (emphatically) waving off the goal. The ref down below points to the net as if it was a goal.

(Thanks for the gifs, Grant.)

It's nice to have a purpose in life :p

Put me in the camp that sees nothing resembling goalie interference in that clip. In terms of pushing and shoving, Burt was giving as good as she got. And while I don't necessarily approve of jawing, if your opponent is doing it you need to maintain your composure and make the saves anyway.

I agree with your entire statement

I think that the refs in the Harvard/Clarkson game sent an obvious, not to say comical, message after the whistle had blown at 6:32 of the first period. With each side already tagged with a body checking penalty in the first five minutes, and more borderline-or-worse checking going on both ways, they called matching minors for..."spraying the goalie" and "roughing." This indication that they were going to call the game closely may or may not have worked, but they at least felt they only had to call three penalties in the next 53:28, one each way for checking and one for holding a player right behind the net, so they must have felt their message had been received.

Wisconsin up 2-0 on St. Cloud after one, on goals by Nurse and Turnbull.

Re: 2014-2015 Division I Scores & Results Thread

I have no opinion on Burt jawing at Tutino after the goal was waved off except to say that I thought it was funny.

Also can I watch ONE Daytona 500 without Tony Stewart getting taken out before the end? For Christ's sake.
