2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

I'm curious how Tampa's gonna go in '12 though.
I think Tampa/St Pete's will be fine. It will be in an NHL arena. Tampa is an easy place to get to by air. Air fares are generally low to Tampa, especially for those who go to the Frozen Four on a regular basis and can plan in advance. Lot's of things to do in the area.

It was Columbus where you couldn't give seats away.

In St. Louis. The scalpers were selling lower bowl tickets for $20 and wanted to pay $5 for the tickets I had (center ice upper bowl.)

If STL was well attended I believe the attendance was radically helped by 1) pre-sales and the fudging all events do by counting sold seats as attended seats 2) people buying NCAA championship tickets for 20 dollars in the lower bowl.

I mean, if the NCAA sold cheap tickets like that for everything, we might sell out football stadiums for Women's Basketball.

Ok, maybe that's a little crazy. :p

But that's why I said you couldn't give tickets away. Some people stood outside the rink in STL and actually held tickets in their hand saying FREE.

No one took them up on it.

I cannot wait for Tampa. An hour from Disneyworld. Nice weather (hopefully) and the beach... I mean, sure it's hockey but this is a nice change of pace. Generally speaking we haven't had even many warm days on a lot of these FF weeks the last decade (this week wasn't all that bad except for the rain Wednesday and cold weather on Friday).

I'm going out for a full week for the Tampa one. Spend some time in Orlando, take the kid to Disney, then head to Tampa for some beach time and hockey later in the week.

Honestly I liked Detroit a lot more than I expected to.

It's never going to be MPLS or Boston or DC, three of the best cities to host, but it wasn't bad at all. Would love to come back, especially if they put it in a new rink.

Why is it awesome to draw 37k when WI and MI have each had outdoor games that drew much more for a REGULAR SEASON game?
It's awesome because both teams playing on Saturday came from more than 400 miles away and they still drew a crowd that big.

It's one thing to hold an event on campus where it's an hour or less drive for most people. It's another thing when it's a seven hour drive that requires a hotel room.

Looked like from my vantage point that this FF more than any other not involving a local team had a significant number of locals at the game. a bunch of the Tigers fans that were at the game with us were telling us they were going to all 3 games and to a man telling us "I don't know why this wasn't at the Joe, the NCAA is stupid."

The people in the section I was sitting in for Saturday had a lot of locals too.

I think that definitely helped, tickets were plentiful and cheap and the locals came out to support the event.

My guess is Pittsburgh is a lock considering the new rink, Robert Morris U, and the Penguins success.

Pittsburgh, STL, Milwaukee, Buffalo, Denver, and Omaha have publicly made bids.

Some other cities have probably also made bids but not made them publicly, I'm hoping in that list the cities include Boston, NYC, DC, Chicago and heck if they're going to make everyone fly to STL, why not just put one in LA. :D (Just kidding, no thank you.)

I want it to go 2013 Pittsburgh, 2014 Boston, 2015 Chicago 2016 DC 2017 Denver.

I don't want any part of STL, Buffalo, Milwaukee(if the Badgers hadn't made that it would have been terrible) or Omaha.

Interesting to read that when, by most accounts I've seen here, Milwaukee in 2006 was very well recieved for a lot of reasons that had nothing to do with the Badgers (namely: lots of cool bars and hotels within walking distance which are also close to the lakefront, etc.)

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

I don't see STL making a bid for next year's Frozen Four considering they're the West Regional hosted by the CCHA... the following years, maybe.

Really dude? MN is the host for the FF next year, Tampa the year after. STL would be bidding for at earliest the 2013 FF but since they hosted in 2008 would probably get (if the NCAA is stupid and gives them the FF again) it in 2015 or so at the earliest.

For our historians, whats the shortest amount of time in the modern era between a city hosting the FF?

I wouldn't go as far as TBA, but there is a kernal of truth to what he's saying. When my friends and I were going in to the first Thursday game, the scalpers couldn't give away tickets--and this was for BC/North Dakota. Yes, Milwaukee has plenty to do around the Bradley Center, and the city does a good job as hosts, but the local interest for anything non-Badgers was shockingly low.

I hate BADgers with a passion, and by extension any part of WisconSIN;) . But I enjoyed both FFs I went to there, '97 and '06 (even though I want both victors in those series to sink into the earth). I like the bar/restaurant scene in MKE and I want to see the Harley Museum and the new art museum on the lake.

I'll have to go back and check what hotel I stayed at - but I remember liking it a lot. Miller park was a cool daytrip. Lots of parties. Really, the only negative I can think of about the Milwaukee FF was Wisconsin. :p (specifically, playing them)

I meant the following years. I was ahead of myself and forgot about TB. :o

Yeah, 2015 would likely be the earliest.

I want the best of both worlds: I want a packed house AND a good city to explore. What can I say, I'm greedy!

I didn't dislike WI at all, but I don't like cities where attendance is largely based on who will make the championship.

I'm also still ruing the stupidity of not buying championship tickets before the first WI game. I could have bought them for well under face from the scalpers scared of losing it all and then turned it all around and made upwards of a grand selling championship tickets on Saturday. :D
