Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

You're forgetting one thing, passport now required for all travels between USA and Canada. Do all the American Players have passports? If they're young enough they need some paperwork with parents permission, etc. Not to mention all the fans attending from stateside would need passports...I know I have one so I'd love it but that might be in an issue :P especially for a team like RIT ;)

Passports should be a complete non-issue for players. They'll have what - at least three years of advanced warning? Coaches can simply gather their players at the first practice of the season and see who doesn't have a passport and get them to file paperwork right then and there if they ever want to at least qualify to play in the Frozen Four.

Same thing applies for fans.

Some states have "enhanced" drivers licenses that allow travel between the USA and Canada in lieu of a passport. They are cheaper and quicker to get than a passport. I'm not sure how many states have them; I know Michigan is one.

Yeah, but these things aren't that much faster than getting a passport and don't offer nearly as many travel benefits as a true passport. Passports last 10 years, most enhanced DL's do not.

The whole idea that this is an issue boggles my mind. Just get a **** passport already.

Toronto would be a great location for the Frozen Four, but I can only see that happening if and when Canadian schools enter the NCAA. That would make it home turf, as well as providing a local host school. I cannot see the NCAA hosting a championship event outside of the US unless they have both Canadian members and a local school participating in the sport.

There's also something to be said for not encouraging people who'd have high priority from buying a ticket with no intention of going, but rather because resale was profitable. I'm convinced that there are some Red Sox and Patriots season ticket holders who don't attend games but keep renewing because there's such a strong secondary market. In fact I was hoping that Columbus would cure people of doing that.
Cure is too strong a word, but the Columbus secondary market was a significant turning point in this regard. The demand level in the Priority Lottery, even for Milwaukee 2006, slowed significantly. As you suggest, the Columbus experience did scare away some of the "investors," and that's a good thing.

Of course the real test comes next year in St. Paul.

I was talking more about the fans that decide after regionals to go because their team actually made it. You and I as regulars who plan on going just about every year it is a non-issue. I was thinking more about the secondary market and the fans of the 4 teams that make it.

That said, there is a serious question as to whether there will be a Posters' Game in Tampa. We've observed an unmistakable trend that an increasingly high percentage of our participants drive to the FF. In other words, people don't want to fly with their gear anymore. For many, the baggage fees are a serious problem. For others, it's just the ever-increasing level of hassle.

:( I was hoping to play in that one, since I'm definitely going down and have family in the area (ie. will borrow their gear - although I'll probably bring most of mine and just use their sticks).

Don't give up yet; I'm not! If there's sufficient interest, there will be a game in Tampa.

That said, the issue definitely needs to be discussed. There's plenty of time to post your views on the Posters' Game thread(s). Decision time is at least a year away.

Another possibility: A no-gear broomball game.

I don't care. I'm making a general argument about US Citizens. Just get a **** passport and stop complaining. This shouldn't be an issue.

Yeah because someone who otherwise has no plans on going to another country should drop $100 at the off chance their team goes to the frozen four

Is attending the Frozen Four a fundamental right that I missed in the Constitution?

A Michigan enhanced DL has a $45 fee. It lasts 4 years.

A passport book (first time) costs $100 and lasts 10 years.

Sorry, I don't buy the cost argument. If you have the money to attend the Frozen Four, you can afford to get a passport.

As for the 'off chance' that you want to go, that's exactly why it's a good idea for US citizens to have passports.

Sure it is (a good idea, not a constitutional right...don't even know why you had to say it that way), and I do...I'm just saying you're not going to get a flood of Michigan State fans driving to Toronto on Sunday like you did badger fans to detroit this year because of the passport requirement. This is a new requirement in the last few years. In fact I've been to canada a dozen times in my life and last summer was the first time I was required to have a passport. I'm pretty sure Minnesota, Wisconsin, etc don't have the enhanced license option. I'm not saying its a deal breaker, I'm just saying it might be a hurdle beyond the obvious of holding the championship in Canada. As recently mentioned...what happens if one of the best players on one of the teams has a DUI?

I don't think the DUI issue is really relevant - as I've stated, a FF in Canada will not happen unless we have Canadian members of the NCAA. In that case, the NCAA will have to deal with such issues on a much broader basis.

Timeframe - also irrelevant. The earliest a FF would be in Canada is at least 5 years from now.

Michigan is much more of a border state than Minnesota is, since Michigan's population centers are much closer to the border than those in Minnesota. Wisconsin doesn't even share a border with Canada.

That said, I still don't see how that would be a problem. The NCAA will do their lottery and will advertise the border crossing requirements. It's in the host's interest to make sure those requirements are known in advance, and most of those fans who would live within a short drive of Toronto will likely be from states like Michigan or New York that do deal with lots of cross-border traffic and commerce and will thus already have enhanced ID's, passport cards, or full-on passport books.

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

I think if they had a FF in Toronto they would set up some sort of deal with the Canadian government to avoid playing issues. I mean there are plenty of players in MLB, NHL, MLS, NFL, and College FB who have criminial records but have no trouble playing in Toronto at the respective events.
