2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

I can't even remember what the heck we did in Wisconsin except go to a Brewers game. And it wasn't that long ago.

I...remember a Brewers Game. I also remember going to Wrigley.

That's really it for me. :D

If we go to KC I can get to a ballpark I would otherwise never get to go to.

I didn't dislike WI at all, but I don't like cities where attendance is largely based on who will make the championship.

I believe the 1993 tournament in Milwaukee was the first to sell out ahead of time, and the 1997 tournament sold out as well. Wisconsin was not in either of those.

As far as lack of interest in the non-local game - that happens a lot of places, including St. Paul. You could not give away a ticket to the Maine-UNH game for free. I'd imagine that's why they went to a single semifinal ticket.

It keeps being asked when they'll announce the next Frozen Four hosts, and I don't have anything more definitive than this article here:

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10098/1048786-169.stm

Robert Morris, with support from VisitPittsburgh and the Penguins, submitted a bid in the fall to play host to a future Frozen Four at the new Consol Energy Center. The next open date for the Frozen Four is 2013, and in June, the NCAA will name host cities for several future Frozen Fours.

First, Pittsburgh's bid must be named a finalist, which the NCAA will announce any day now. Schooley said he expects the NCAA will announce finalists on or around April 15 but that it could happen sooner.

Also from that article: looks like the Pittsburgh folks are pretty serious about getting the F4. I approve.

Yeah, around April 15th they're going to announce the finalists, then they're going to announce who gets the bids in June.

I think Tampa/St Pete's will be fine. It will be in an NHL arena. Tampa is an easy place to get to by air. Air fares are generally low to Tampa, especially for those who go to the Frozen Four on a regular basis and can plan in advance. Lot's of things to do in the area.
True, you got Clearwater Beach there, planned right and it could be a mini-Spring Break for some people with a little Hockey thrown in. Only problem might be finding some ice for a Posters game there, but thats a minor complaint.

Ok I was just googling Frozen Four bids and stumbled on this article:

Thats pretty scary that San Antonio and the Alamo Dome put in a bid back in 2003.
Yeah, Texas just doesn't have the numbers of Hockey loving Locals there to make it work like it would in Detroit, the Twin Cities, and Syracuse to make the venue look semi-filled.

But they bid and the NCAA made money on this deal in Detroit so who knows...

True, I would like to think they would at least try a stadium somewhere else like the Twin Cities, or Syracuse's Carrier Dome before they would try pulling it off in a non traditional Hockey Hotbed area with a dome. San Antonio is a nice place to go and visit and its a great Sports town as well, but I would think that the problems with the risers would need to be solved and proven solved before people started to make plans to go there for a Frozen Four.

The NCAA isn't going to make a Minnesota Bid involve the Metrodome and I honestly don't think the Gophers would choose anything but the X. Although who knows, maybe Mankato or Duluth would try to put a bid together with the Metrodome.

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

The trade-off of being the only show in town(in a non-hockey town) is you're going to be in a small town like KC or Fargo.

Did you really just put Kansas City and Fargo together as comparable cities?

If you thought there were issues for the Frozen Four, just wait for STL's regionals next year ... better hope UNO gets there - that's gotta be the closest team right?

I'm guessing Green Bay would be the preferred spot for Wisconsin and/or Minnesota.

Omaha's a 5.5-6 hour drive from St. Louis. Notre Dame or one of the Ohio schools is almost certainly closer.

The Metrodome and the Carrier Dome are the two most logical Stadiums to try to put together a bid to host a Frozen Four. Nobody else in the US in a hockey area has a roof that you could get 40,000 under, other than Miller Park in Milwaukee, and well, too many problems to list with that for that to ever happen.

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

If we want to take an occasional risk with nontraditional sites, to avoid falling into a rut, why not send the event back out West? No, I mean really West. Maybe someplace like HP Pavilion (San Jose)?

Cowboys Stadium in Dallas 80K+

At least there would be an amazing video board to watch the games on...
