2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

I know that San Antonio has been tossed around in this thread. What arena in San Antonio could host this? Is there one big enough? Does the Alamodome have ice-making capabilities? If the arena situation is good there, I wouldn't mind that trip as a non-traditional frozen 4.

edit: you answered my question in your edit :p

The Alamodome might not be a terribly venue with an end-ice configuration., the sightlines were actually great for basketball when I was there. Problem is, the local support wouldn't be what it is in Detroit to fill up the seats. But San Antonio is a GREAT city to visit and is great destination for a Final or Frozen Four.

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

What ever happened to the long-dormant proposal that the NCAA consider a rotation schedule among four permanent Frozen Four sites, such as:
• Boston's TD Garden
• Milwaukee's Bradley Center
• St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center
• Denver's Pepsi Center
and stop moving all over the map from year to year?
More than likely, these four cities would be high on any fan's list of choice destinations and each offers an NHL arena seating capacity necessary to accommodate the customary demand for FF tickets.

I approve. But I'd include DC. That seemed to be a VERY popular locale.

DC is not in an area where college hockey is popular, unlike Denver, Boston, St. Paul and Wisconsin. It should not be in any rotation, IMO.

I don't like the idea of a solid rotation, anyway (even if all those sites are great). I like how they do it now - certain cities get repeat bids, and once in awhile, they pick someplace new.

And then we all complain about the new place and how much it sucked. :)

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

A set rotation is a bad idea. Remember what happened in Boston - they did a poor job hosting and thought they were a shoo-in for another bid. The NCAA thought otherwise. And with non-traditional places like DC doing a great job of hosting, that's Boston's loss.

Well, for one thing, the TD Garden didn't seem particularly interested in hosting. In the last go-round they didn't put in a bid deemed worthy of an award. And that's despite the fact that you have to believe that the NCAA would want to put a FF in Boston.

Frankly, I don't see what's so bad about moving all over the map from year to year. I kind of like visiting somewhere different each year.

The Wells Fargo Arena is a fantastic arena, easy to get to, with not much of anything around it.

... in other words, a "cookie cutter rink, next to a nondescript river, in a not-too decent part of town," like most every other hockey arena. :D

Qwest Center seats an extra 1k. Another FF option?

No, 16K+ isn't enough. Even Boston's 17,565 is pushing the low end. The arena reall should be 18K+.

A rotation would be a horrible idea, cities would get old and people would want to stop going back to the same places all the time. I've seen some basketball fans complain about being in Indaianapolis again this year for the Final Four, even with a new venue, as they've used it 3 times this decade. DC absolutely should be a regular bidder for this, the arena is great, the city is incredibly easy to get to, there are a bazillion things to do, and it's a great sports town. It doesn't matter if there isn't a team nearby, so to speak, it's a great choice, and the event went off fantastically last April. In fact, Princeton is ~180 miles from DC, there's only one team that's closer to Milwaukee than that distance, and Milwaukee is Milwaukee. Whopee, Miller. Plus that facility is 20+ years old. You're living in 1990 if you think DC is a bad choice for a FF. Nonetheless, CHICAGO, DAMMIT.

A bad choice for one FF? Nah, it was fine. Had a good time. Nice arena, and of course, the city is great. Have been on vacation there many times.

But in a solid rotation with other cities that have multiple FF successes, where the area is actually aware that college hockey exists? Different situation.

There's lots to do in NYC too, but that doesn't make it a great FF site in everyone's mind. But everyone wants something different, I guess. Some people want a family-friendly vacation spot. Some people want a walkable area with places to hang out with other fans and perhaps enjoy a few adult beverages.

I like the suggestion of Houston, though. Why not try it once?

In other news, I vote for Lexington, Kentucky. Have you seen those posters!!!!!!

I wouldn't trust the list. It lists the United Center of having a capacity of over 19k but the Blackhawks in 2008 averaged over 22K each game. Also MSGs capacity is going to change with the new renovations about to take place.

the UC sells standing room tickets for 'hawks games -- they have 19.7k seats, and sell nearly 2k standing room seats.

There are a lot of suspect numbers in there though -- including squeakyball capacities. For example, Scottrade center seats just over 19k for hockey, but over 22k for foulball.

I just figured it was a decent starting list of possible arenas/locations for Frozen Fours. Not reading too much into the accuracy of the seat count, just using it as a starting point.
