2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

Stupid question #19
How high do you all tee the ball? I keep seeing "tee it so the ball is 1/2 above the driver". Trouble is, when I do that, I slice. when I tee it so all the ball is covered by the club, I hit it straight between 180 - 200, with the occasional "how did I do that" 220.

Any suggestions / guidelines / tips?

I think its just personal preference. I like to tee it up high, since it seems to allow me to uncork 300+ drives. If its windy and into the wind/crosswind, I tee it lower, because it keeps my trajectory lower, and my ball a little more out of the wind.

A good friend is a member there. I played with him and two others on a chilly November day a couple of years ago and had a pretty decent round. Shot a 95 dealing with the wind and cold, but the friendship and good walk made it that much better.

And the clubhouse was unbelievable. I felt like those guys at Sawgrass in the Master Card commercial.

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

Golf is a funny game. On Tuesday, I played Kennedy Golf Course in Aurora (a decent Muni in Denver). I struck the ball beautifully, and shot my first sub-100 (97) score since picking the game back up earlier this summer. If I would have had my putter going, I could have broke 90. I was actually hitting good (for me) drives of about 225-250, and I was rocking my 3 wood. I managed my second birdie of the year, and had several pars (and many, many putts for par). That leads me to Sunday. I played the same course, and couldn't hit a shot to save my life. I put up my highest score of the summer (112), but my putter was electric. I could have easily shot a 120. I made 1 par (the first hole, thanks to about a 30' putt after shanking my approach off a tree and getting a fortuitous roll onto the green) and lost a half-dozen balls.

I'm playing South Suburban (another decent Muni in Denver) today, and I hope that I can combine my shot striking from last Tuesday with my putting from Sunday and shoot a good (for me) score.

Anyway, just wanted to vent about last week's weird rounds. Wish me luck today :p:D:D

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

Happens to us all. One week on the 9 hole that I play fairly regularly, I am a superb ball striker, good putter, and hit a 41 on a par 34. Next week, I play like I've never seen golf before, put 2 in the water, and shoot a 50.

Is anyone following the Open? I think a duck has the best chance of a low score.

And Steve Stricker, Mr. steady, bogies 3 of the last 5 holes. Even the pros go through it.

Look who's lurking....

edit: Tom Watson is in the red!

aronimink is pretty dam cool... not a weak hole on the course.

clubhouse is something else...kinda like interlachen if the minnesotans who built it didn't want the outside to look like a bigger, prettier beer hall! :D

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

It was an interesting round today from what I watched (apx. 4:30 to 8:00 Eastern). The fescue was nasty. I struggle to get the ball out of 3-4" rough...watching these guys play the ball out of that stuff is impressive. Of course, I also wish I could "chunk" my 4 iron 220 yards like Woods did today.

Personally, my game is maddeningly inconsistent still. On Tuesday I shot an all-time worst (at least that I can remember and that I kept score) round of 116. FWIW, I lost about 4-6 balls in the rough, which was quite frustrating (and assuredly caused more than the 4-6 penalty strokes added to my game). Then, yesterday I went out and shot a 91. With the exception of a quad on a par 3, my worst score was a double, and I made several pars and two birdies. It was by far my best round of the season. I didn't three-putt a single hole, although I did managed to 4-putt on the par 3 that I scored a 7 on. It was refreshing to finish with the same ball that I started with.

All that being said, the best part was watching my buddy break 100 for the first time in his life (~32 years old, plays about once per week over the past few years). He has come close when we've played before, but always seemed to mess it up in the last few holes (including shooting a 9 on a par 4 on 18 when he needed only a 7 to break 100 about a month ago). Yesterday, he was at 90 with 2 holes left and went par-birdie to finish with a 97.

Holy hell. Brandt Snedeker is running away from the field. 6 under through 13 today, 10 under overall.

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

Tiger brought is "A" game, it appears, but he's still 5 back, after Snedeker posted a 64 this morning.

Snedeker -10 (through 18 today)
Scott -8 (through 13 today)
Tiger -5 (through 8 today)
McDowell -4 (through 9 today)

Bubba Watson must be eating dicks today, he's now at +2 and behind the other Watson. On that note, Tom Watson is E for the tournament!

Great to see John Daly and Tommy Watson make the cut. JD has been playing pretty well of late, good for him.

You're swinging at it instead of down and through it. Let the ball get in the way of your swing instead of making the ball the focus of your swing.

And start your downswing with your left tricep. Drag the club through the ball.

One of those three tips should cure what ails ya.

Bubba just hit a 7 iron...from 220 out. Sweet mother of god.
