2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

What a finish by Ernie! Scott is up by one and in serious trouble on 17. Ernie has to be the favorite right now. WOW.

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

Every time I hit an ugly shot on the course, I get comfort from watching the pros hit the exact same shot. Could both Opens end the exact same way?

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

That has to be it. It will be near impossible for Scott to save par on 18 now. Ernie has it in his pocket now. Start the engraving.

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

That putt is doable if he doesn't brick (again).

And when I think of major brickings, I first think of the Norman one at Augusta in '96 I think when he lost to Faldo after leading by something like six shots at the start of the final round.

...and Els wins. Hahahahahahahahaha!

Wow. Congratulations to Ernie Els, Champion Golfer of the Year.

Played 9 at Norway Country Club, Norway ME, a very scenic 9 holer (absolutely beautiful in late Sept/early October). Shot a 45. Inching closer to playing bogey golf on a consistent basis.

Its Norman 1a, and Jean Van de Velde 1b. Norman's choke was spread out over the whole final round, while Van de Velde focused on one horribly played hole, that just happened to be the 72nd one.

edit: Also, lets not forget Montgomery's and Mickelson's chokes at the US Open at Winged Foot, to allow Geoff Ogilvy to win. They both doubled the 18th, when a bogie would have at least forced a playoff for either of them.

Rory's choke last year?

Rory's choke last year?
I didn't think he had that big of a lead going into the round...2 or 3 strokes. Maybe I'm wrong though. I remember him being out of it by the time he got to Amen Corner, he didn't quite have his hands on the prize like Norman did with a monster lead going into Sunday, or Van de Velde did with a 3 shot lead on the 18th tee box...or Montgomery in the center cut of the fairway of the 72nd hole, par to win, bogie to tie...Scott, 4 up with 4 to play.

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

Being up 4 with 4 to go, only to go bogey-bogey-bogey-bogey to lose, is above Norman's epic tank job, IMO. Scott's Open was right there in his hands with 4 holes to go. Norman still had a day's work to do yet. Van de Velde was just plain stupid.

4 shot lead going into Sunday, loses by 10 strokes to Charl. Yes, he imploded on 10 and throughout the back 9, but he made the turn still in the lead. And a 14 stroke differential in a final round is virtually unheard of. May not be the biggest choke job, but it was a solid one.

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

What's the most you've ever paid for a golf round? And where was it?

I still play the local muni's so I can't contribute - and until I get a lot better (bogey golf) I'm not going to a big course.

In Colorado, I typically pay about $40-45/round. The most expensive place I have played was actually Red Hawk Ridge in Castle Rock. I paid $72 for 18. My buddy keeps pressuring me into playing up at the Pinery in Castle Pines. That course usually runs about $115, unless you play twilight.

That being said, there are usually different courses that have good deals. For example, yesterday I played Plum Creek (also in Castle Rock) for $25. I had a great day putting (34 putts for the round), and shot my top score of the year with an 87. I also nearly had my first ever eagle, but my putt lipped out. I'll take the tap in birdie though :)

I should also note that all of the prices I listed included a cart.

OK, I'll tell

www.mcggolf.com <== county courses
My 9 hole course is $13.50 (walking). I like it because it forces me to hit straight / draw shots. All slices are penalized. There is a sizable goose population, so it make for some creative shots.
One other 9 hole county course is $10 twilight and you don't need the driver -- it's designed for improving your iron play.
The 18 hole county courses run from $52 prime time with cart to $25 or so twilight (cart). One course has free range balls, the rest make you pay. I avoid weekends.

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

I paid about $125 to play Deacon's Lodge several years back, don't think it's that expensive anymore. Painted Bandit and I are planning to play Erin Hills sometime in the next couple years, at $200, with $50 for a caddie fee, and a recommended $45 caddie tip.
