2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

I just saw this thread, and I'm very jealous of all of you. I just started up playing again after about a 5 year break from the game. I played Red Hawk Ridge (Castle Rock, CO) from the Gold Tees (69.6/126) and shot a 102, then followed that up with a 107 from the Golds (70.7/131) at Deer Creek (Littleton, CO). I'm still working on my endurance/focus as my Front 9's are significantly better than my back 9's (45 at Red Hawk/47 at Deer Creek), but my biggest struggles are hitting my hybrids. I seem to either top the ball or get way under it. Obviously, I need to do some work on the range.

Also, thanks to joecct and the list that you provided on what tees I should be playing from. Apparently I should be hitting from a closer tee box.

Welcome back to the land of the dead!
If I recall, Castle Pines in Castle Rock had five tee boxes when I played the media days for The International. That was confusing to say the least.

Castle Pines is a great course...from what I've heard. Cherry Hills is another great course, and the BMW will be there in 2014. Perhaps at some point I'll befriend John Elway and get to play there, as currently I can't afford the $100k membership fee. :p:D:D

As for the tee boxes, most of the courses I've played here have anywhere from 4-6 tee boxes.

Ugh. Golf is awful when you hit low hooks off the tee!!! Ben hogan put it best, "playing with a hook is like trying to play with a snake in your pocket" :(

Playing with a draw is a deal with the devil too in that the hook is always lurking to rear its ugly head. What causes a player to go from a natural draw to a hook off the tee?

clear out a little early (take something off a club / come over the top a hair) or forget to wack off (if you is right handed) before playing.

Well, I guess I'll just have to risk the hooks.

For me, to make it over-simplified, when my swing gets too fast, I hook. If I can keep it it's normal tempo (which is already too fast), I hit it straight/with a slight draw.

My first time golfing last year I shot a 147. This year I shot a 108 thru 16 and a 127 through 18 (2 different times and courses). getting better.

For me the biggest reason is hanging back. Your lower body doesn't clear so your hands flip over.

Hey! You can join my foursome!

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

Had one of my best-ever rounds this morning. Par on #1 and out in 44. Started the back with par, birdie and three more pars before a couple of hiccups and a par on 18 for a 39. First time ever under 40 for 9 holes. Had the short game dialed in and had more 1-putts than 3-putts.

Now I have to hope I can carry it over to my next round!

That's a little true for me, but I think when my swing gets too fast, my hands get ahead of the clubhead and I push it. When I'm swinging harder generally, I think I pull/lunge a little and get the hook, which sounds kind of like what you are saying. But you're right, tempo is everything.

Last year I was at a pro am type event and I was a couple of fairways away from the range. From afar, it was very easy to tell who the pros were just by their smooth, unhurried tempo.

After all these years I've finally realized that tempo is the key to better shots.

Figures -- a German wins the French Open

And pin placement for round 4 of the US Women's Open. Par is going to be a good score today

Finally got my plans set for Myrtle Beach next week... Originally was going to play Myrtle Beach National - South Creek on Tuesday, followed by Barefoot Resort - Norman & Barefoot Resort - Dye on Wed, followed by Blackmoor down in Merrel's Inlet on Thursday... Given this past week of weather, we decided to drop the two Barefoot courses and move Blackmoor up to Wed... 36 holes in a day was just too much for us... We've had enough heat up here... Just take Thursday easy and do a beach day or go fishing or something...

Really looking forward to Blackmoor actually... It's a Gary Player designed course and seems to allow for creative shot making... There are very few places on the course where you just have one option to get a ball close... Also has a good amount of risk/reward type of shots too... MBN was required with our package, so we're just gonna roll with it... Doesn't seem to be anything special or different from a mid-range course up here in Chicago really...

Played Willowbend in Mashpee (Cape Cod) on the 4th. The Bog and Bay 9's. 50-51. Really slowed down my take-away and came off the tee very well. Putting was an adventure as the greens were much faster than I'm used to.

A beautiful course. Nice to have rich friends :)

My dad sent this to me. I can't speak to its veracity, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was real. :)

#5 and #7 are pretty good. Pretty tough course if they are going to penalize you a stroke because you freaked when a bomb went off.:)
