2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

For me with a 195 5-iron, it seems pretty close for the irons...

The woods are significantly short though.... They list a 5-wood at only 230 and on good days I can roll that 250-260.... I can hit a 19* Hybrid 240.... Currently hitting an outdated Callaway Steelhead III+ 3-wood about 275... My drives are also a bit longer, but they were in the ballpark... I currently hit my R-11 about 290 and they listed 281... There are times where I can touch 300 as well...

If you are looking to lock down distances, a good way to do this would to find a place with an indoor simulator and just hit 15-20 balls with each iron... Take notes and find an average... This gives you a good baseline with zero variables... Obviously the next step is learning how to account for things like temp, wind, and elevation changes, but that is something that takes time...

LOLTiger.
He's just setting us up for later... I mean Dale Jr. won the NASCAR race, so Tiger MUST win the US Open :p

All in all, the course is very playable... Nerves are gonna take their toll on the players though... You can already see it in guys like Hossler and Tiger...

Westwood would be okay if he could refrain from leaving his ball in cypress trees.

When Furyk buried that ball in the bunker, he buried his US Open hopes with it.

he buried it on 16. he is a steady front runner type player - not one to charge from behind.

That snap hook was like watching one of us on the tee.
Kudos to Simpson, but it's he now the latest Ben Curtis?

What do you think of the Tee it Forward initiative? As I was watching the Olympic carnage, I was wondering how high my score would be hitting from the appropriate tees.

I think as long as I did not exceed my weight (100 kg) I would be happy.

I'm really confused by the whole thing? Isn't it exactly what different tee boxes try to accomplish? Is it for amateurs of all ages to be able to compete at the Open against pros who are playing from the tips? If that is the purpose it sounds like a terrible idea.

Webb is a former sunnehanna champion. i was pulling for him. (though a buddy of mine had placed $100 on furyk to win [at 42-1])

The way I understand it, is you play the tee box(es) that match your ability. Say your tees are:
Black: 583
Blue: 532
White: 505
Gold: 415

Let's say the goal is to hit an 8 iron into the green for your 3rd shot. Figure out your normal previous 2 shots (drive + ?) that get you into 8 iron range. That's the tee box you use.

Let's say my driver normally goes 200, that would leave me
383 from the blacks
332 from the blues
305 from the whites
215 from the golds (Assuming I hit the fairway)

I could probably reach the green in 2 from 305, but it would be a long shot for #3 and I have less control over them. But 215 in 2 shot is doable with a short iron into the green for my GIR (again assuming I keep it in the short grass).

It also affects pace of play. I've played with people who insisted on hitting to the blacks and had trouble getting to where the white tees were (where I usually hit from). If he hit from where I hit, we would have played a faster round. And the faster you play, the more people you can fit on the golf course, right???

At the moment it would appear I am hitting form the proper tees. Depending on the course I hit from the whites or blues. The course I grew up playing had blues, whites, and reds (recently added golds). I played whites most of the time and blues occasionally for a challenge (there was not a ton of difference in distance except on the back). The course I usually play now has black, blue, white, gold and red. We go back and forth between blue and white. I played a course a few weeks ago that had 6 different tees. They had black, gold, blue, white, red and orange. One thing that would be nice is if all courses would do the same thing. The course with 6 tees had the gold as the 2nd longest when other courses have gold as the senior tees and are usually 2nd shortest.

305 in 2? Seriously? That's even a question? The only thing to decide at 305 is if you can get there with a 3 wood or if the ball is sitting up enough to hit a driver off the carpet to make sure you get there. Worst case is you hit a 3 iron and leave yourself a nice 70-80 yard sand wedge in.

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

I think most courses that us regular folk play are already short and most of us are probably already hitting from the right tees...or maybe even should move back. It seems that this would really only apply if you are playing a TPC or something that might be way longer and would require someone to move up. It may also apply to someone who plays very sporadically or is new to the game. They feel like they have to play from the farther back tees because that is where other people they know play from but they may not be good enough to do it themselves. I just say hit from where you feel comfortable and are having fun.

Re: 2012 Golf Season - No matter how you slice it, it's still fun.

Today my son and I wanted to commit murder on the golf course. The threesome ahead of us decided that it was OK to play multiple balls until we got to the tee area, then they hit for real. They would then drive down the hole picking up errant shots. Every bleepin hole we had to wait for the idiots to clear before we could tee off. Backed up the entire course behind them. Since it was the recreation course (9 holes) no course marshal was present.

On the good side, I figured out how to hit and control my fairway woods and hybrids. Driver was fading, but I got that under control later in the round. Oh and I holed out for a birdie with a chip shot from about 30 yards.

Oh, and 305 is a long way for me to get there accurately.

I read somewhere that the US Open field was 1500 strokes over par at one point.

I could have done that well all by myself. :D

I played Bethpage Black on media day before the 2002 Open. I always say I spent more time on the beach that day than Annette and Frankie! :D

It was fun watching on TV and saying, "Hey, I was in that trap/rough."
