Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel
I know I'm a couple of pages behind here, but for once I have something I actually want to say that I won't argue about, I just want to put out there.
Since I think the concept of an "illegal" is BS, I agree with Old Pio, but since that BS concept does currently exist, I can see Scooby's point as well. The thing is, Texas is one of the few states that is trying to make higher education a route to legal residency, a cause that I think is very important. It feels weird to say, but on this issue, Texas is probably the most progressive state in the country.
As for the racism thing; racism isn't just people screaming epithets and hanging people from trees. The constant sense that a significant number of Americans give that "you don't belong here" is racism. The feeling that you have to always be smarter, and better, and more efficient than the rest of your coworkers so that they don't think you're an "equal opportunity" hire is racism. The fact that, yes, minorities still make less money for many jobs than whites is racism. Racism is not dead. It's not even mortally wounded. It may not even have a tummy ache. Ok, maybe a tummy ache. But racism is a daily part of life for millions of Americans.
And before anyone starts in on me, yes it goes the other way as well in some places. That doesn't make it better, it makes it more insidious. I am white. I am male. I am heterosexual (I think). Every day, I can go wherever I want, and no one EVER questions my right to be there. No one ever looks at me or speaks to me like I'm up to no good. Clerks at grocery stores don't look at me and speak to me like they're better than I am. That isn't true of everyone in this country. It isn't true of everyone in Denver, where I live. Racism in the current day is not a liberal/conservative issue, and my fellow liberals who think it is are only fooling themselves. And anyone who thinks racism is dead is REALLY fooling him or herself.
Racism today is a festering boil under the surface of what looks like a peaceful society. I hope the days of yore stay in yore, but I'm not positive that they will.
