Re: 2012 Elections: Corndogs for everyone!

You forgot Martin Luther King Day Protester.

Forgot about Bob Gray. Sorry! :D;)

I agree with the idea that Gingrich might be a stronger electoral candidate that Romney. The Mittster looks good on paper, much like a Fred Thompson type. But as we've seen the past few weeks, when he gets knocked off stride it can get pretty ugly. Come general election time, the Obama camp was going to destroy him with ads about outsourcing jobs in the rust belt when he was a venture capitalist.

Newtie on the other hand locks up the South at the very least, something Romney was going to struggle to do in a place like Florida. That in of itself gives him a better showing than the 2008 ticket, although the chances of him saying something disasterous between now and November are pretty good.

Re: 2012 Elections: Corndogs for everyone!

I hadn't thought of Bachman for VP but it makes sense for a guy like Gingrich who's going to have problems with the female vote for obvious reasons.

An ethics-deficient bomb-thrower and a serial-liar in born-again garb as the GOP ticket? How does this make sense for a party whose primary and over-riding motivation has been to make Obama a one-term president? That ticket would be like Christmas in August for Obama and the Dems.

Congratulations to the Minnesota Mishuganuh for her latest pants-on-fire bleat:
We also examined Bachmann's claim that when Romney was governor of Massachusetts, he "put into place socialized medicine." We fact-checked that one and the [truth-o] meter burst into flames.

You're trying to look at this logically. Logic went out the window a long time ago in the GOP, as its a primary process strictly driven by emotion. Otherwise, why would New Gingrich be on the cusp of the nomination? Why was Herm Cain in 1st place until multiple sexual harrassment claims/payoffs felled him? Really, the righty voters are not looking for best matchup vs Obama. They're looking for most animosity towards Obama.

Obviously you and politifact don't understand what the GOP considers socialism these days. Bachmann's right in her assessment because it jives with what the party believes, campaigns, and says every chance they get.

And the best part is, because of those benchmarks she is the biggest Socialist in the Midwest! The hypocrisy knows no bounds these days!

Obama should just record the attack ads on Newt that Paul and Co. will pull out because they are brilliant. The stuff about him supporting Single Payer is going to be hilarious when he tries and defend himself on it.

Its funny how some politicians can say dumb things and few people care (say Obama or Reagan) while others everything sticks to them regardless if its even true or not (Palin and Al Gore). Gingrich is definitely in the second camp, and he has a LOT of statements out there. Will be very interesting to see if he gets any benefit of the doubt come general election time.

Re: 2012 Elections: Corndogs for everyone!

Interesting comparison in today's Washington Examiner that compares Newt to William Jennings Bryan. Prophets do not get elected.

But then again, to quote a favorite son of Long Island...
You may be right
I may be crazy
But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for

Well it all deals with how the person appeals to the people...I mean Clinton got away with a lot too because people were drawn to him. His wife could never do that because she is cold and comes off as calculating.

Newt is going to have all sorts of image problems come the general election. just like Mitt, every attack he makes on Obama is pretty much hypocritical and the record proves it. The first time he cries socialism his support for Single Payer comes out. When he talks about his faith and how Obama is a radical then all his indiscretions will come about no matter if Jesus forgave him. When economic policies and/or party politics are brought up he will be railed for shutting down the government and when he rails against special interests his record as a lobbyist and so on will be a massive albatross.

the GOP better hope they have a surprise candidate up their sleeves because if Newt or Mitt is the best of the bunch they may as well just not even show up.

IMHO.

I agree with the rest of your post but I'm not sure about this. For one thing, he can spin it that shutting down the government provided the discipline that eventually got the balanced budgets. For another, you're talking about an electorate that can't recall or relate to events that happened 17 months ago, let alone 17 years.

You're trying to look at this logically. Logic went out the window a long time ago in the GOP, as its a primary process strictly driven by emotion. Otherwise, why would New Gingrich be on the cusp of the nomination?

I was just looking at this. Gingrich is now leading the Republican nomination by a whopping 11% pts eclipsing the support for both #2 Romney and #3 Paul combined (RCP). Whereas Gingrich gets clocked by Obama in a full national election by 7 pts...whereas Romney is less than a single pt behind Obama.

So the question is...how disconnected are these GOP voters from the rest of America for these numbers to work?

The real question is: how much stock can you place in polls this far out? Answer: not much. Besides, Obama's losing support in many "swing" states to either Newt or Mitt. And that's where the thing is won or lost. Not horserace polls a year out.

Good point. But at this point the GOP appears to be spotting Obama an average of 6 pts in every state by nominating Newt.

Not according to a Gallup/USA Today swing state poll released today:

Deadmeat's gonna have hundreds of millions of dollars to carpetbomb the Republican nominee between the end of the primary season and the conventions. It could be devastating. All of us, and I mean all, rely on polls too much. Especially the polls that seem to support our perspective.

Was that really 17 years ago? Mein Gott...

I'm just arguing semantics here, because I tend to agree with your point. Anyways...

To be fair, 7 points is hardly clocking someone. Since JQA, the average margin of victory in the presidential election is 9.03% (including negative margins in the popular vote). :D

Interesting. We'll see...a handful of those 'swing' states are already in the D column (and thus far, Gingrich has only put his big toe in his mouth).

But to your point, Puti...err...Newt may still take the US presidency with less than 50% of the vote.

We've had many minority presidents, including JFK, Clinton and Bush II, nothing terribly unusual about that. As to the "swing" states, you say some of them are in BO's hands, the poll referenced above says otherwise. Plenty of time, yet.

Re: 2012 Elections: Corndogs for everyone!

When I read that article I thought- why would the Dems be energized yet? There are a bunch of half baked candidates on the GOP side, all with many foibles. The Dems have been sitting watching them pizz at each other with no real media push. I think that will probably change when they put forth who ever 'wins' the nomination for the GOP. Right now they are all fun to laugh at. I imagine when they start talking about what they think they will do people will take things more seriously. No idea what they will decide when they are more serious. I, for one, have stopped paying attention for now. They all are posturing but no one is really challenging anyone else about serious issues. (well I guess being rich or unfaithful is serious for some people :p)

Re: 2012 Elections: Corndogs for everyone!

If Gingrich or even Mitt is the nominee then the GOP is a joke. At least the Dems put their money where there mouth is when they nominated and elected Obama. Niether Gingrich nor Mitt represents the party's true values. Santorum and Bachmann are both sitting there, get some guts.
