Re: 2012 Elections: Corndogs for everyone!

We're getting them in Mass and I can't stand it. Forget the economy, think of how many new gambling addicts they'l create. Not to mention, I personally don't want that type of crowd coming into my state.
Same here in MD. They're starting to show up. The governor and his lackeys in the legislature want to raise taxes and fees to cover the revenue shortfall (or is it spending excess?). Meanwhile the Comptroller (D), who may be the only sane man in Annapolis, keeps saying that increasing taxes is a bad idea.

Re: 2012 Elections: Corndogs for everyone!

A big, big problem in this country is the population as a whole engages in activities that make no economic sense. Taking equity out of your house to go on vacation for example from the previous decade. Expanded gambling is another part of that. This country collectively needs to put more effort into making things to export to the world market which will lead to a net gain in jobs. The more people look to ideas like casinos to stimulate their economy the further this country falls behind.

Explain the direct correlation between expanded gambling opportunities and viable US exportable goods? One need not be at the expense of the other even if your overall end goal makes sense.

Opportunity cost of investment? Not my argument, but factories, universities, farms and research institutes create wealth, gambling just redistributes it.

Re: 2012 Elections: Corndogs for everyone!

If you want to go on an anti-gambling rant, you must start with state lotteries. I would venture a guess that they are far more likely to take money from people who may not otherwise gamble than casinos.

Re: 2012 Elections: Corndogs for everyone!

Everyone understands the hypocrisy involved with gambling of any sort. State lotteries (read: voluntary tax) and so-called casino gambling all play to our worst instincts. I have no religous or ethical qualms about gambling, for the most part I believe adults should be able to do nearly anything with their own money. Besides, most people aren't compulsive about it, set limits, and have themselves a good time.

But it's the posturing by the politicians who make it possible that sticks in my craw. Example: when so-called riverboat gambling came to Council Bluffs, Iowa (across the river from Omaha) the legislative phonies decreed that casinos couldn't have ATM's in their lobbies to "keep problem gamblers from squandering the rent money, etc." Yeah, as if somebody who's prepared to gamble away the rent money will be disuaded by having to drive a couple of blocks to a 7-11. Such BS.

In my mind it's similar to the horse collar rhetoric from politicians who are considering cameras to enforce various traffic ordinances. "Oh, think about the lives we'll save, etc." I'd love to be a fly on the wall when the camera companies pitch a city council. You think saving lives and preventing accidents is the first thing they mention? Or is it the seemingly endless revenue stream that will come rolling in with no investment in equipment or personnel? If lives are saved, it's a bonus. The object is to get the bucks, period.
Besides, I think drivers have a right to confront their accuser. Especially since nobody involved with the cameras is a sworn law enforcement officer. Hire more cops.

Honestly, I can't believe that traffic cameras haven't been ruled unconstitutional nationwide. Especially when they don't have a picture of the person driving, just the license plate.

Who do I face in court? How do you know I was driving my car?

These things are very controversial in Phoenix. Last year a driver with a very strong opinion on the cameras, stopped and shot a guy to death who was manning one of the roving camera vehicles. Just pulled off behind him, got out of his car, walked up to the van, and shot the guy. Obviously an extreme reaction. It is questions like yours which result in the tickets not counting as points on licenses and for increased insurance premiums. Imagine, the price of your government mandated insurance goes up because a machine says you did something wrong.

Honestly, I could care less about the cameras themselves or catching speeders. It's the NEXT step that I'm worried about. WHen do we put in a full CCTV system like the UK? That's simply terrifying.

To me, it's the hypocrisy of claiming the cameras reduce accidents and death. When everybody understands, it's all about the money.

Lol, typical Arizona. It doesn't surprise me considering how prevalent guns are in that state.

Re: 2012 Elections: Corndogs for everyone!

Arizona sure isn't batting 1000 with the gun thing. No stories about how all those guns are protecting someone seem to get past the media filters.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Go roll your eyes somewhere else.

It's not really logical to fire a cheap shot at Arizona or get off a boilerplate comment about guns because of the insane actions of a senile old man, now is it? We have our fair share of nutballs here. But I see stories every day about people being shot to death in other states and under really bizarre circumstances. And from you? Crickets.

My God those chicks need to get laid...

(but I tend to agree with them.)

Re: 2012 Elections: Corndogs for everyone!

After that debate if I'm Barack Obama I'm laughing all the way to the bank. I've never heard of an upstanding Mormon engaging in gambling. Also, who the hell has 10K to just throw around on a whim? As I mentioned before Romney is on script 99% of the time, but when he's off he looks really bad and petty. Reminds me of when Guiliani zinged him about the "sanctuary mansion in the Boston suburbs" for illegal immigrants during the last contest.

So, can it really be Newtie for the win? Nice of him to find God's forgiveness by his 3rd marriage, although one has to wonder why God wasn't keeping him on the straight and narrow after his first divorce, but whatever.

He has the inside track for the Likud nomination.

538, Politico, Cook and their ilk are starting to float the idea of a late entrant or a brokered convention choosing somebody completely unsullied by this circus. This is the kind of situation where The War Hero comes in handy. Where have you gone, Oliver North? ;)
