2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Looking back to the 10-11 team, we had no returning 40 point scorers from 09-10, this year we have 2, as well as a 30-point guy, and 2 20-point guys at forward. In 10-11 we had 3 30-point players, and 2 20 point players at forward. Our top-6 this year might be just as good as 10-11, but I don't see us having the talent/depth to have players like Nelson and Kristo on the third line like we did in 10-11. I agree that we will have a great checking line, Rodwell was missed last year, he is the epitome of a checking line player, big, fast, strong, tenacious, and tough.

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Anyway...

What are everyone's expectations from this North Dakota hockey team this season?

I listed mine in the first post, so I'll recap my expectations

1) Top two regular season finish
2) Final Five Championship Game appearance
3) Make NCAA Tournament
4) Make Frozen Four
5) 25-28 wins

Consequently, my "exceeds expectations" goals are:
1) Win the MacNaughton
2) Win the Final Five
3) Win the National Championship
4) 30+ wins

Only two weeks left until the first exhibition...can't wait!

I think you're right on par with the goals/expectations. The only thing I would change would be:
2) Win the Final Five, I feel almost selfish saying that, but when you rock it three years in a row, you come to expect it.
4) Reach the second round, I feel this is what I expect, but would be delighted for anything more.

Kind of in between of expectations and exceeding them would be:
1) A Hobey finalist (probably Kristo)
2) 40+ points from Grimaldi
3) A solid goaltending configuration (whether one or two guys in net), with above a .910 SV% and under 2.75 GAA
4) At least a split at Mariucci

Obviously mine are a little more specific and individual player oriented, but I would hope if we met all of your expectations, all of mine would be very achievable.

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

It's unfortunate but I think Kristo knocked himself out of contention for the Hobey - he won't score very highly on the first two criteria:

1. Candidates must exhibit strength of character both on and off the ice.
2. Candidates must contribute to the integrity of the team......

He could score 100 points and still not get it.

Danny Kristo would probably lose the Hobey in the snow some place anyway on his way to another nookie session with his f* buddy.

True, but I didn't say win it, just be a finalist. Maybe something similar to Frattin. I think they should automatically disqualify anyone who's major is 'Recreation and Leisure Studies'.

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

If you have followed the Hobey closely, it seems they only apply those two criteria when selecting the Hobey Hat Trick. For example, Blake Geoffrion won it (3 years ago?), him and his defenseman teammate Brendan Smith were both Top 10 finalists. Smith outscored Geoffrion as a defenseman, he should've walked away with the award but because he had a few run ins with the law he didn't even make the Hobey Hat Trick. I think Kristo will make the Top-10, he will need an unbelievable season to make the Hat Trick, ala Frattin, but has 0 chance at the actual Hobey with his priors, IMO.

Think anyone from UND other than Kristo has a shot? Knight could put up some points and apparently has great character, but he really didn't seem to have that game changer ability, imo.

It will really depend on line chemistry especially with the first line. Duncan had amazing chemistry with his line mates and since Toews and Oshie could create so many opportunities for him all he had to do was bury the puck which he was gifted enough to accomplish. I don't know if Knight, Rowney, and Kristo have the skill sets to create Duncan numbers for themselves or for one another and with Krisptoes' off ice antics it would have to be one of the latter to be nominated. I think only Knight has that potential so IMO it's a long shot for a hobey hat tricker to come out of UND this year.

I agree with your assessment of Knight, he does not have the electric, game changing skills that Kristo have, but the Hobey doesn't really look at that they look at point totals. Kristo is without a doubt the more dynamic player, but that doesn't mean Knight won't lead this team in scoring. He does have back to back 40 point seasons under his belt.

Don't discount the possibility of Carter Rowney having a big year.

We all recall the second half of the 2010 season when Frattin came back from his suspension and played great. 11 goals and 8 assists in the 24 games played after the Christmas break. Then the following year he elevated his play even more, finishing with 36g, 24a.

Last year UND played 24 games after Christmas. Rowney had 13g, 11a.

It'll depend a little bit on who he's paired with, and how much time he sees again on special teams, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he had a monster 30+ goal year.

I'll keep my money on seeing Sasquatch.

Why do you say that? He had 18 goals last year while playing with two freshmen. He absolutely carried that line last year. I would expect the MacMillan-Rowney-Parks to stay together this year and with MacMillan and Parks being sophs and hopefully much improved, it absolutely is in the realm of possibility that Rowney nets 25+ next year. I would consider it a disappointment if he didn't score at least 20 goals this year.

Grimaldi. If he plays a full season.

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Grimaldi. If he plays a full season.

Well I suppose it's all sort of matter of how the lines are set up. I don't think Rowney makes sense to plug in as the LW (seeing as he's left handed, too) and moving Knight over would be idiotic since he may be the best faceoff man in the NCAA. If I were to guess:

1) Grimaldi, Knight, Kristo - Forbort, Schmaltz
2) MacMillan, Rowney, Parks - MacWilliam, Mattson
3) Cagguila , O'Donnell , Rodwell - Simpson, Gleason
4) Pattyn, Gaarder , St. Clair

Or something along those lines?

I agree. He had a breakout year last year and will challenge Kristo for points leader. BTW, welcome to the board.

Grimaldi. If he plays a full season.

He would have a chance. It was fun to see him play a couple of games last year. Let's hope for a full year.

Lets all hope these young guys learned a valuable lesson so down the road when they are upperclassman this crap won't happen again.

This comment was especially comical: "Forbort also told her 'it wasn’t an initiation party but a party that had gotten a little out of hand,'" Right...and the only drunken remnants of this zoobang are four sauced and unconscious freshman with vomit stains. Don't hook Forbort up to a lie detector he might cause a power outage.:D

I agree. The story would have rang truer if he had simply said, "hey, it's Friday night in Walsh Hall."
