2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

like the gophers or not, you shouldnt be creating a rumor about a kid that you have no idea about the circumstances of.. much less mocking his ineligibility and a year or his career

Because Minnesota fans would never do the same thing about one of our players (read: Danny Kristo - Frostbite incident).

Well, we would have done it, but didn't have to since the rumor started from GF. Now we certainly repeated it gleefully....

I had heard the rumor from Minnesota fans prior to MNS ever stating it here, so I think it qualifies.

I agree.

Anyway...

What are everyone's expectations from this North Dakota hockey team this season?

I listed mine in the first post, so I'll recap my expectations

1) Top two regular season finish
2) Final Five Championship Game appearance
3) Make NCAA Tournament
4) Make Frozen Four
5) 25-28 wins

Consequently, my "exceeds expectations" goals are:
1) Win the MacNaughton
2) Win the Final Five
3) Win the National Championship
4) 30+ wins

Only two weeks left until the first exhibition...can't wait!

Hey, hey, hey. I am open to the possibility that he wasn't drunk. He was just that stupid! :D

I think your expectations are spot on, providing that we have any players that are serious about hockey. I suppose what has happened isn't anything that doesn't happen every year but it sure doesn't give me a good feeling about the season. Hopefully the message has been sent and received!

The suspensions don't really worry me, by the reactions from former players, it seems like this is a tradition, albeit not a very good one. I think they will be fine, if this whole thing happened mid-season, then I think it would be a much bigger issue.

Agreed. As long as the players get in line, UND should be just fine. I have no doubt that they will.

Yes, if this string of suspensions doesn't send them the message, I really don't think anything else will short of kicking them off the team.

What are the written guidelines which stipulate at what point the misbehavior of NCAA DI scholarship athletes will revoke their scholarships? This information would focus discussion and curtail senseless squabbling.

Not sure what the guidelines are, but much worse things have happened in college hockey the past few years and the NCAA hasn't revoked scholarships. Most of the punishments have been by the coaches, the NCAA guidelines must be very, very strict because I have never seen them applied to the point where a scholarship is stripped. At least not in hockey.

IMO those are some lofty expectations. From what I know, UND has a team that is on par with most over the last decade (that is to say pretty darn good).

But to say that if you don't make the Froz4 you pass on expectations and the only way to beat expectations is to win it all? That's pretty lofty. If the team is on par with past years and the expectations have matched it. That means that you fail to meet expecations more often than not and its been quite a while since you've beat them.

Anyways just pondering...

FWIW, these are the same expectations that I had for the 2010-2011 team. I feel that this North Dakota squad is on par with that team and should do similar things. That squad exceeded expectations in everything except winning it all, so it was a pretty darn good season. Basically, this squad should be a true #1 seed, and should make the Frozen Four. Getting upset in the regionals would be a disappointment, at least at this point before the season. Obviously, things can happen to change expectations.

Looking at the last decade, this team should be on par with the following teams:
2003-2004 (did not meet expectations, but exceeded expectations in a few areas)
2007-2008 (met expectations, and exceeded in a few areas)
2010-2011 (met expectations, and exceeded in nearly every area)

I had lower expectations for the following squads:
2004-2005 (exceeded expectations in post season, met regular-season expectations)
2005-2006 (exceeded expectations in post season, met regular-season expectations)
2006-2007 (exceeded expectations in post season, met regular-season expectations)
2008-2009 (met expectations in post season, exceeded regular-season expectations)
2009-2010 (met expectations in both regular and post season)
2011-2012 (met expectations in regular season, exceeded expectations in post-season)

Of course, these are just my expectations of the team. I'm sure most Gopher fans have similar "lofty" expectations for their squad this year.

Can't imagine anyone on this board engaging in senseless posting.

I have very high expectations for this year as well, but unless the players drastically improved from last year, which is possible, I don't think this team will be as good as the 10-11 team. They had 2 of the top 5 lines in the country that year and their 3rd d-pairing would've been the top pairing for 45 other teams that year. The depth on that team was unreal, I don't see that with this years team.

We'll have to agree to disagree then. I think this year's squad should have 3 solid scoring lines and a hell of a checking line. Defensively we may not have the depth, but the top-end talent (read: top 6 blueliners) is just as solid as the 2010-2011 squad. The one area where I think we may not be as good as 2010-2011 is in net, but keep in mind that going into that season nobody thought Aaron Dell would be much of a factor.

That point is worth nothing in that when looking at expectations, I don't look at what the team actually did. Rather, I look at what I expected out of that team. As noted, the 2010-2011 squad exceeded expectations in every area, with the exception of winning it all. Going into the season, I had the exact same expectations for that squad that I do with this squad.
