2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

What happend to Luke Voltin?? Wasn't he supposed to be a star the Sue stole right from the Gophers back yard?
Sorry to break it to you but Shane Gersich is the next Luke Voltin...Hak can't evaluate talent...he just goes off hype.
Pog will be a stud though, no doubt.

Someone please tell me the real reason Cary Eades was fired? Everyone says there is more to the story but nobody will say???

Voltin still has time to prove himself, I would be very surprised if he is at UND in the fall. Since Gersich was the first overall pick in last years USHL entry draft, then apparently more people than Hak can't evaluate talent. Gersich and Poganski are still a few years away, let them develop before putting labels on them.

Nothing has been publicly stated about the Eades situation, or lack thereof.

Kristo and MacWilliam have signed deals with the Canadiens and Leafs, respectively. It's also reported that the Kings GM wants to sign Forbort ASAP.

And I'm glad to see all these Gophers players sign. I imagine Haula is next, seeing as it sounds like that class was a very tight knit group.

What happend to Luke Voltin??

I saw the first 2/3rds of the Bucs home games this year and in all honesty, I have no idea how Voltin got a spot with any WCHA team let alone UND. I'm not saying that Hak can't recruit anymore, but I'd be shocked if he became much of a player for UND.

Not surprised at all. He has been in a majority of my classes and is a very intelligent, hard working guy. He definitely wants his degree. I'm glad to hear he's coming back. Still waiting word on Forbort, he allegedly turned down a close friend's birthday party due to him, "probably not going to be here by the weekend."

Unrelated, but does anyone think Knight may turn the free agent route?

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Looking at the roster, it seems that UND, for the first time in quite a while, is not going to be returning several star players. Grimaldi could be one, but beyond him, is there anyone else with 40 plus point potential? Looks like the D is losing a lot too. Any big time recruits coming in?

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

@SchlossmanGF: London Knights take UND recruit Christian Evers in the fifth round. They will surely try to talk him out of his UND commitment.

I believe he's a 2014 recruit...

Mark MacMillan is the only other player that has the potential to hit 40 points next year. I thought he would hit that mark this year, but had a slightly disappointing season. Michael Parks and Drake Caggiula have 30 point potential next year as well. At least one surprise breakout happens every year, I would expect a breakout (scoring about 20 points) from one of the following: Brendan O'Donnell, Colten St. Clair, or Connor Gaarder. Simpson could hit 30 points as a dman, Schmaltz and Mattson could hit 20 as well.

As for recruits, it will be a fairly large class, with a good mix of junior experience and youth. The players that are projected to come in are Wade Murphy, Adam Tambellini, Luke Johnson at forwards and Paul LaDue, Troy Stecher, and Keaton Thompson at defense.

Murphy and Tambellini are BCHL stars, Tambellini should be a pretty high pick (2nd to 4th round) in this years NHL draft. Johnson has put up good numbers in the USHL. I would guess all three are every night players from the start of the season. For UND to be successful next year, I think at least one has to step up and have a 20+ point season.

Stecher and LaDue will come in with a lot of junior experience. Stecher has already been named BCHL Dman of the Year, and LaDue is the favorite to win that honor in the USHL. Keaton Thompson is accelerating his schooling to come in as a senior in high school, it takes a pretty special player to be able to do this. Since UND is losing three of there top 6 defenseman (MacWilliam, Gleason, and Forbort), I would guess for sure two, and probably all three players will see significant time next year. I expect LaDue to have a very good freshman season, similar to Nolan Zajac of Denver this year.

this indeed well be a huge class for UND next year. Almost no seniors. I think we'll look at Rodwell to really step up. Not necessarily as a scorer , but a leader. I feel a little better about UND's defense next year than this year. I feel goaltending will be less shaky. I don't know how we'll work the lines because the obvious choice would be Mark MacMillan-Grimaldi-Parks, or something like that, but does it make sense to not have the MacMillan's together?

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Rodwell wasn't very good down the stretch. If he steps up, he will fill a spot nicely.

I agree, but UND needs a bruising enforcer, I can't name a payer other than *gulp* Panzerella. He is probably the fastest player UND had and definitely could fit nicely. This upcoming year definitely won't fit the UND mold at all.
