2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

Re: 2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

People would complain whatever the system is. Seeding is determined by the PWR, so it would be difficult to get too upset about the seeding. I also think they should have the second round at the higher seed as well, best 2 of 3. Then skip the bye week before the Frozen Four, so it doesn't take any more additional time than it does right now.

The bye week is because of the bouncyball Final Four weekend, and the NCAA doesn't want to compete with itself (as in, tv coverage). Yes, I know the two fan groups don't realllly overlap, but still.

Ah c'mon, man! You can't walk from Durham to Manchester? What's wrong with you? It's only about 50 miles!!! :)

Can you walk from Boston to St. Louis?

I understand why they have the bye week. They have the Regionals go up against Basketball, so having the Regional Finals go up against the Final Four wouldn't be that big of a difference. The Frozen Four would still be the week after the Final Four.

Re: 2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

In all seriousness, let me ask a question. Would it be better to hold the regionals in smaller venues rather than the larger NHL/AHL arenas?

YES!!! A million times, yes.

I also think this idea would be great. But then we would have people complaining about seeding. "My team shouldn't be a 3, were definitely a 2"

Tough.

Yes. Change the rule so that a host school doesn't have to play in their region.

Then people will bid less money, so the NCAA will make less money. Try again.

Re: 2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

Maybe the ACHA has the right idea. Sixteen teams, one location, four games in five days to win it all. ;) :D

. . .
Yes, it would be, and is. Having a Regional in an NHL rink is an aberration, and one that I think that the Scottrade Center will regret. I was shocked that they even put in a bid for a regional. You have not only the fact that it will probably be a monetary disaster, but also the NCAA regulations regarding signage, beer sales etc.

Re: 2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

It made sense. Merrimack is within driving distance of Manchester, and Michigan and UNO might be the only schools that can save St. Louis attendance wise.
Walking distance, if you believe The Mullet.

True but if GDF gave more support to the hockey and support a regional this wouldn't happen. BC should be able to host a regional and an NCAA every now and then. GDF wears clown shoes.
Exactly.

BTW, all the people whining about UNH getting a home game as the #4 seed have obviously never been to a UNH game in Manchester. Vastly different from a true UNH home game, in pretty much all aspects.

One point I want to comment on is the point that Melrose had at the end with "Blasi going to be mad with [Miami] going East once again."
He's gonna be even angrier when UNH wins. :D (Yeah, I'm picking UNH. I'm a homer.)

The problem is the host rule. It's gotta go. BC should be in Manchester. UNH basically bought their way to a home game as a 4-seed. Silliness.
As noted, BC should host, then it wouldn't be an issue. I don't recall BU fans complaining all the times they've gotten to play in Worcester because they were hosting.

Re: 2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

Sounds great, but the NCAA wants neutral sites (in the east, anyway) and single-elimination. Too bad, because I think that would be a great format.
If money talks (and we know that it does), someone should mention to them how much more of it they'd make under the alternate format. With a first round best of three scenario, you're basically doubling the number of games played (current format: three games per region for a total of twelve games; alternate format: eight best of three series plus a single elimination round to determine the frozen four for a total of 20-28 games).

The nice part about this is we get rid of the stupid bidding process altogether and reward the teams that had good seasons by giving them home ice for a round. Of course, the trade-off is we're less likely to see major upsets which is part of the current appeal of the tournament.

I'm guessing (does anyone know the exact amount?) the NCAA gets a ****load of cash from the bid process which prevents them from considering the best two-of-three format. That's also why prices for tickets are astronomical.

If this every happens again, I promise to whine. Or at least mention what a yahoo rule it is.

i could give a crap about UNH hosting; everyone knows the rules well in advance. not to mention, no matter how much home cooking they get, UNH never wins anyway.

but it sure is funny to see the mildcat fans get so up in arms over the TD Garden playing merrimack's goal song - yet have no problem with the perks that come with hosting in the ncaa's.

Re: 2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

LOL!!! I love it. The BC guy says stop whining to the UND guy, but then continues to whine himself. I love it. Poor BC....

There is SO much eastern-bias at ESPN it makes me wanna puke watching it every year. I do love though how none of the three no jack about college hockey, but at the end Buccigross calls it "the greatest game".

Go SIOUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty sure UND has hosted regionals recently in their own arena. Western fans are hysterical. You can all beat your chests until a few Saturdays from now when a team from the East brings home the trophy as usual.

Re: 2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

Anyway......enough jawing with the BC idiot....

What are everybody's picks for this year's Frozen Four????

I predict UND, Michigan (though BC will be VERY tough to beat), Miami (OH), and in kind of an upset....MN-Duluth.

Denver, Boston College, Yale, Miami

The WCHA has 36 National Titles and 27 Runner-Ups (some overlap) in 58 seasons. The few years prior to the WCHA, future WCHA teams won 3 of the 4 titles. Please define "as usual".

I'm sure what you mean is BC and BU winning the last 3. But I wouldn't call that as usual. I would call that recent success.

Agreed, I've never liked the host rule and would love to see it go.

But this isn't your typical "big school buys success" situation either. UNH is a money-poor state school while BC has a $1.5 billion endowment with an athletics department that plays in the ACC. Clearly they could muster the resources to put together a competitive bid to host three hockey games over one weekend (as BU has done for years).

But yeah, BC deserved better here, for sure. I admit, though, that I'd have more empathy for the little guy getting screwed.

That last part only applies if your memory only goes back three years. For those of us who have been following the sport longer, we simply know better than to make such stupid claims as that.

Re: 2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

The West regional is going to be very entertaining. Tickets are only $39 for the whole session in an attempt to boost attendance. UNO and Michigan have a history and split at UM this season. Haven't seen BC play but I know CC is a good team so that should be a good game as well.

Waaaah, rinse repeat. Western hockey is so overrated its painful. Expect the same thing again. The only question I have is if Miami lasts long enough to get beat by a Boston team again or if UNH will put them out of their misery early.

Re: 2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

I'd love to see a 2-of-3 at home format. That could lead to some fantastic home crowds and great games, as well as two excellent super-regionals the next week. However, I doubt the NCAA would let a super-regional weekend happen at the same time as the bouncyball final four.

It's a shame for BC that we have to go west, but that's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. The format is what it is, everyone knows the rules ahead of time. Someone has to pay to host these regionals.
